Let us mobilize against repression
With the proclamation of the pandemic, forms of government based on a permanent state of emergency have taken hold in capitalist democratic systems.
Seamlessly we have moved from the mass confinement of public health measures – curfews, lockdowns, etc. – to the war economy: energy and primary goods (food) prices are rising, and the media is talking about energy rationing for the winter.
Already exhausted by the health emergency, now we have to tighten our belts to pay war expenses while Leonardo, ENI and Stellantis shareholders fill their bank accounts.
We are convinced that in many countries of Europe a part of the population will mobilize against a further lowering of their conditions of survival, but we are also aware that governments, and for several years now, have sharpened their repressive tools in view of this situation.
Italy sets the standard. Here, to handle “emergencies” in terms of repression we find at the forefront the DNAA, Direzione Nazionale Antimafia e Antiterrorismo, which, among others, has the task of expressing an opinion on the appropriateness of assigning this or that detainee to special detention regimes, primarily 41 bis.
The Antimafia (which since 2015 has also dealt with terrorism) exports to the field of political repression the “exceptional” and “emergency” methods used against organized crime.
41 bis is a form of institutionalized torture that, using sensory deprivation techniques, aims to produce mental and physical damage to those under this regime in order to “produce repentants.”
This is a tool already used for the purpose of political repression and applied to prisoners and detainees belonging to the communist BR-PCC (Brigate Rosse) organization.
In recent months, both DNAA and 41 bis have played a key role in the repressive tightening against against the anarchist movement. Among the most recent episodes we would like to point out:
– the hefty 28-year prison sentence for 280 c. p. (attack with the aim of terrorism) to Juan Sorroche Fernandez accused of the attack on the Treviso headquarters of the racist Lega Nord party;
– the re-qualification by the Court of Cassation in the crime of “political massacre” of the explosive attack against the Carabinieri cadet school in Fossano for which comrades Anna Beniamino and Alfredo Cospito were convicted. Both attacks had resulted in no massacre but only material damage;
– last May, Alfredo’s transfer to the Bancali (Sassari) prison, under a 41 bis regime.
These repressive attacks indicate “zero tolerance” toward direct action.
We are aware that this is a warning to all those who actively participate in the social conflict and that they will cascade into increased repressive pressure on all initiatives of struggle.
Therefore, we believe that the defense of these comrades concerns everyone and everyone, just as we believe that extending solidarity and collectively defending against repression will be one of the issues to be addressed in the struggles of the near future.
We have therefore decided to initiate a series of struggle initiatives addressing the specific issues we have indicated, with the intention of broadening the front of the struggle against repression.
