Repression in Yogyakarta (Indonesia)

Hi, my name is Joe Hill and I’m raising money to help my good friends and comrades in Java, who have been forced from their homes due to their decolonial political and community work – publishing anarchist literature, running anti domestic violence workshops and supporting farmers in land rights struggles.

From PATM Indonesia:

In December 2025, an anarchist organizer and publisher based in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, was subjected to intimidation, surveillance, and forced displacement following a series of false accusations spread by involving Indonesian police and immigrationnt authorities. The publisher, PATM (Page Against the Machine), is an independent publisher dedicated to translating Indonesian anarchist and decolonial texts into English for a wider global audience. The latest release, Anarchy in Alifuru: The History of Stateless Societies in the Maluku Islands (written by Bima Satria Putra), was published in the UK on August 2025 by Minor Compositions. Another 3 titles are currently in process, the success of which depends on stability of work and home.

The incident began when a visiting foreign friend, legally present in Indonesia, briefly documented a public mural event commemorating International Human Rights Day. Although the event was not a demonstration—therefore he was having no involvement in any protest—and no laws were violated, he was accused of participating in a “demonstration” and labeled as part of an “international anarchist network.” His passport was confiscated, and both he and his host were subjected to prolonged interrogations by immigration authorities. No allegations were substantiated, and the passport was eventually returned after a couple of days.

Following this, false information was circulated by police at the neighborhood level. Local authorities and the property owner were informed that the resident/the host was allegedly hosting a “problematic” foreign national and misusing the residence. As a result, the host who lives with her child and operates her residence as a working place for PATM was forced to leave their residence.

This is not an isolated case. This form of repression—using administrative pressure, immigration mechanisms, and neighborhood surveillance—reflects a broader and ongoing pattern of state paranoia and repression in Indonesia following the mass protests of August 2025. Activists, artists, researchers, workers, organizers, and civil society have faced increasing intimidation and disruption of their living and working spaces, often without formal charges. This includes targeting of individuals perceived as critical or connected to international networks.

Due to this forced displacement, the family urgently needs support to secure safe and stable housing, as well as to continue PATM’s publication activities. After limited options, a new residence has been found. The cost is IDR 13.5 million per year if paid upfront for two years, or IDR 15 million if paid only for a year. A 6 million IDR down payment has already been made, but an outstanding balance of 9 million IDR must be paid by the end of March 2026.

This solidarity fundraising seeks support to cover two years of housing rent (GBP 390 needed before 20th March 2026, and a further GBP 525 for the following year) (around GBP 915), ensuring basic safety and stability for a parent and child, and continuity for independent research and anarchist publication work.

This is a call for solidarity and mutual support against repression and in response to the shrinking space for critical engagement in Indonesia.
