Athens, Greece: Anarchist comrade Nikos Romanos denounces deep parastate with far-right tendencies

Our anarchist comrade Nikos Romanos releases a text denouncing the parastate and fascist actions of the Greek cops inflicted upon him, his family, friends and comrades. The comrade has been under surveillance on and off since his release three years ago by the fascist scum of the Anti-Terrorist Unit, which has now hit a new level since the beginning of the hunger strike by his friend and anarchist comrade Giannis Michailidis, who has been subject to further imprisonment despite serving the required amount of time that would trigger his release.

The repression our comrade is facing should be considered and analysed within the international context of repressive tactics by states against those who dare to fight back without fear. With the current international environment, such as the war in Ukraine, the impending economical crisis threatening on the horizon, technological developments, the repressive apparatus of all states is entering a new stage to counter the struggles that are coming.

Without further hesitance, we let our comrade’s words speak for themself:

The events that I am about to recount took place on Monday 20/6 in the afternoon outside my friend’s house in the centre of Athens. They concern yet another incident where police surveillance by the anti-terrorist police crosses the boundaries and red lines that exist and defines the peculiar relationship between a secret service and its potential target victims.

So let’s get to the facts. The hunger strike of our friend and comrade Giannis Michailidis, who is fighting against the arbitrariness and methods of the bourgeois justice system by putting his body in a barricade, has been going on for the last period of time. He is in a regime of preventive detention because while he has served the sentence imposed on him, the judicial councils, acting as thought police, reject his requests for release, foreseeing his future behaviour as other Pythias*. In essence, they are punishing him not for what he has done and for which, according to their laws, he has served his sentence, but for what they think he will do, based on interpretations that have nothing to do with reality.

During this period, the surveillance of the anti-terrorist police against me has become a daily occurrence, while their presence outside my family’s house has become daily and provocative, with large groups of anti-terrorist police officers defiantly rushing around in their vehicles. This event was interrupted following an engagement with these police officers on Saturday 18/6, where it was emphatically stressed to them that their defiance must end and that their continued presence there would not be accepted. Which was accepted and they ceased their defiant presence, so there is no point in me expanding on evidence that exists and will not be published unless there is a substantial reason. Greece: Judicial Council of Amfissa rejects the request for release of the hunger striker Giannis Michailidis, who has been on hunger strike since 23/5

Today 20/6, the Judicial Council of Amfissa rejected the request for the release of fellow hunger striker Giannis Michailidis. The Judicial Council of Amfissa and its judges signed with their dirty hands the attempted extermination of our comrade. Next to their name, the word executioner will carry with it the stigma that must accompany them for the rest of their miserable lives.

The Amfissa Judicial Council has carried out part of a wider repressive plan to deal with our comrade’s hunger strike. Systematic silencing by the mainstream media, bureaucratic delay of the response in order to damage and exhaust the striker, rejection of the application at a time when he is in a critical condition in the Lamia hospital.

As we speak, after a month of hunger strike, Giannis has reached 57.5 kg, has lost more than 21% of his body weight and his life is in danger. He is locked up in a squalid cell in the Lamia hospital, without even a television to keep him informed, which he is deprived of by the ridiculous argument of the cops that “there is a fear of suicide from the TV cables”. Visits with his companion are refused, and she is not given an official update on his medical condition.

We denounce the vindictive treatment of the hunger striker and call on the mass bodies and the doctors’ trade unions to take a public stand against these outrages. Hunger strikers are not suicidal, they are putting their lives on the line and fighting for life itself to triumph.

Dead hunger strikers do not commit suicide, they are murdered by capitalist states, imperialism, fascism. This is how it is done in Turkey, this is how it has been done in Germany, Northern Ireland and elsewhere. We warn for the last time those responsible, the executives and deputies of the New Democracy, the appellants of Lamia who will examine the appeal of the hunger striker, those willing servants of the state apparatus who give any kind of cover to the plan of extermination of our comrade: Those of you who put your hand on our comrade’s extermination, those of you who become part of the repressive tactics against him, those of you who do not separate your position while it is still early, we will make sure that nothing goes unanswered.

We call upon the solidarity movement, as well as every progressive person who recognizes in Giannis a selfless fighter who fights with his life against state arbitrariness and vengefulness, to unite his voice, to join the solidarity demonstration on Friday 24/6 at 18.00 at the Propylaea. To do everything in his power to set up the roadblock that will prevent the extermination of our comrade.

Athens, Greece: Gathering outside Hellenic Cosmos at the book presentation of Adonis Georgiades

On Wednesday, June 8th, an event/presentation of Adonis Georgiadis’ new book, entitled “Simple rhetoric lessons” will take place at Hellenic Cosmos. Also participating in the event are Makis Voridis, Kyriakos Pierrakakis, Grigoris Psarianos, Michalis Dimitrakopoulos and Aris Portosalte.

We decided to intervene and disrupt the smooth conduct of this presentation both in the light of solidarity and support for our comrade and hunger striker since 23/5 Giannis Michailidis, who remains imprisoned indefinitely, despite meeting the formal conditions of his release for all his sentences after 8. 5 years of detention, but also to show that this mob is only specialised in one kind of rhetoric and that is hate speech.

These people, for various reasons, are for us despicable subjects of the political scene. Two ministers in key ministries such as Development and Investment (A. Georgiades) and Interior (M. Voridis) who are important cogs in the far-right wing of the ruling party with roots in neo-Nazism. Especially Voridis who was an active “activist” of the far right in the 1980s, either at the Athens College from which he was expelled for anti-Semitic attacks, or as the chosen one of the dictator Papadopoulos in the ΕΠΕΝ (Junta cops) during the years he studied at the Law School. A wing that has been upgraded over the last 10 years, effectively giving line to key issues in the public sphere. These particular ones, with their rhetoric and practice, are pushing for the implementation of increasingly conservative and obscurantist legislation. They are pushing for a more dynamic application of the ‘law and order’ doctrine. For more sweeping operations in the centre of Athens. For more freedom for uniformed killers to turn the bodies of the oppressed into shooting targets. It is no coincidence, moreover, that the New Democracy, through the mouth of Adonis Georgiades, took political responsibility for the execution of Nikos Sampanis in Perama. Along with the conservative positions they express on issues of repression, on economic issues they are supporters of the harsh neoliberal model as imagined by the technocrats of the Chicago Group. They are pushing for more privatisations, for fully flexible labour relations, for a cut in the rights of the economically weakest, for the dismantling of public health and education, in order to enrich big business with which they have friendly and behind-the-scenes relations. Athens, Greece: Responsibility claim for the incendiary attack in Pefkis-Lykovrisi – To burn the beast of gentrification to the ground by Thousands of Suns of the Night

On 27/04 we placed incendiary devices in the offices of the Nea Dimokratia (New Democracy) Pefkis-Lykovrisi, burning them completely outside and a large part inside, essentially closing the office.

We hold this party accountable for a series of actions that form the backbone of the Greek state’s agenda.

Redevelopment-Regeneration-Repatriation-Suppression

From the beginning of its term of office, ND as a government has shown its intentions on the issue of the city. The Athenian centre is constantly being shaped as a luxury showcase for global and European tourism. This process started and accelerated already in the years of the covid-19 boom when hundreds of thousands of euros were given for the construction of the Grand Walk (pet gentrification project of Athens mayor Kostas Bakoyannis). Public space is increasingly occupied by goods and consumers. Universities and spaces that once seemed to be meeting points for movements and collective processes are now being cleared, controlled and mapped with cameras and cops (ΟΠΠΙ, university cops). The state’s attempt to turn the Gini polytechnic into a monument in a move of gentrification is also characteristic. At the same time, student movements are subjected to extreme repression, with typical examples being the pressure in other universities such as the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, as well as the case of the 14 students who are being persecuted under the umbrella of manipulating DNA files. In continuation of the pressure on the anarchist movement with reference to meeting places is the continuous repression of the occupations in the centre of Athens and Thessaloniki.

Of course, along with all the above comes the redevelopment of squares, parks and hills. The criminal collaboration of the state with capital leads to the appearance of construction sites and dust in the squares, security barriers, blocking of work sites, extra security with security and cops and as expected: displacement of the poor, the marginalized, migrant women. Even the few places that the poor, the people from below, the people of our class had to catch their breath, are being forcibly taken away from them. This plan is being carried out all over the centre, from Galatsi and Pagrati to the most migrant neighbourhoods, Kypseli Square, Protomaya Square and soon Exarcheia Square. Athens, Greece: Incendiary attack on the house of the president of the Youth Organization of New Democracy, Pavlos Marinakis

On December 15, in the evening, we attacked with an incendiary device the house of the president of ΟΝΝΕΔ (Youth Organization of New Democracy), Pavlos Marinakis, at 29 Ariannou Street in Pagrati.

Another act of direct action that is deliberately concealed by the mainstream media, aiming to protect, first of all, the target, but also to safeguard the overall prestige of power that wants the rulers to be immune away from the hands of their “impoverished subjects”. But nevertheless, we are here to refute this false security that they diligently seek to present as the privilege of the powerful.

So we too have sought out and found this particular subject who lately, apart from being outrageously provocative with his audacity and statements, seems to be on an upward trajectory in New Democracy. This is anything but coincidental, of course. This party has invested in the profile of a popular right-wing party that clearly leans towards the far right, while at the same time launching an image of sophisticated “excellence” through the universally controlled media in order to cover as large an audience as possible.

So let us say a few words about this gentleman in order to illustrate the rot that he carries and serves. Part and parcel of the vanguard of an alt right, he has given credentials of political compatibility with the obscurantism of New Democracy quite early on. A servant of a rhetoric that wants “national interest” to be identified with a creeping fascism in all aspects of social life. A nationalism of ‘everyday life’, accessible and palatable to the whole of the constituency, an extraction of political discourse through the constant promotion of social media. An outgrowth of this covert nationalist dimension is his macho statements with references to the civil war.(Tsipras if we lived in the civil war by me you would “go”) Of course we have no desire to take a position in this verbal dispute as we are sure of the role both of them would have had during the civil war.
