Nussir is a mountain, not a mine! – Call to action against the “Nussir mine” beyond liberal environmentalism in Norwegian-Occupied Sápmi

Posted on 2026/03/11 by darknights

1. WHAT IS THIS?

This is a global call to action against the copper-mine currently under construction in Riehpovuotna (called “Repparfjord” by the colonizers), in Norwegian-occupied Sápmi. The Canadian company Blue Moon Metals (BMM) – full owner of the mine’s operator Nussir ASA – is actively involved in the colonization of Sámi ancestral lands through the construction of two copper and precious metals mines in the region. This is part of a rapid expansion of corporate extractivism stemming from the EU’s Critical Minerals Act, as the “Nussir mine” has been named a “Strategic Project,” allowing for large land grabs and cutting through any environmental or Indigenous land protection under the banner of a so-called “Green Transition”. More information on the history of the land and the numerous Sámi-led struggles, can be found in the later sections.

2. WHAT CAN BE DONE?

Besides the Nussir copper-gold-silver project, BMM is currently advancing two other brownfield polymetallic projects, Nye Sulitjelma Gruver (NSG) copper-zinc-gold-silver project in Norway and the BMM zinc-gold-silver-copper project in California. All 3 projects are located within existing local infrastructure including roads, power grids, railways, and/or previous extractivist projects. This makes them desirable for investors, but also more easily accessible for those who wish to intervene.

In December 2025, the first phase of the Nussir-mine project was completed, by detonating an entrance tunnel through the mountain. The next phase entails preparation of surface areas, which means more activity above ground and around the mine. This is a crucial moment, as BMM now depends on much more investments to further pursue their operation. So let’s make this a nightmarish quest! We believe that there is a possibility to win this fight if we broaden our ways of attack and internationalize the struggle. We do not want to define your means or your targets. Do whatever feels in line with your way of acting and existing skills. It could be organizing a blockade, a banner drop, or a solidarity photo, while emphasizing the need for the most materially impactful actions at this time. We welcome your creativity and experience, and hope to see many different approaches on all kinds of platforms.  Continue reading “Nussir is a mountain, not a mine! – Call to action against the “Nussir mine” beyond liberal environmentalism in Norwegian-Occupied Sápmi” →

Minera Aclara: Rare Earths, Geopolitics and Extraction in Abya Yala (Chile, Brazil)

Posted on 2025/12/01 - 2025/12/01 by darknights

Minera Aclara is a project promoted by the company REE Uno SpA, now known as Aclara Resources, which aims to extract rare earths from two sites, one in the hills of Penco, territory occupied by the Chilean state, and the other in Goiás, Brazilian territory. Rare earths are a set of 17 minerals mainly used for weapons and the technology industry (batteries, luxury electric cars, wind turbines, etc.), everything that is sold today as green technologies. These technologies, which are not for mass use but rather for industry and the military and economic elites, are sustained by the extraction of raw materials from Abya Yala region and other territories that have historically faced colonization by world powers. Currently, Penco and Goiás are territories that are in the global spotlight of extractivism, representing a strategic point in the war for control of the production of these substances.

The project to be installed in Penco consists of three rare earth extraction zones, consisting of open-pit mines with a diameter of approximately 45 hectares, equivalent to 45 soccer fields, and a depth of between 40 and 60 meters, which is where the concentrations of these minerals are found. On the other hand, the module that they intend to install in Goiás comprises an expandable area of 1,500 hectares.

What do we know about rare earth mining?

For years, China has controlled rare earth mining, generating more than 95% of the world’s production of this mineral alloy. A terrible example of the consequences of this industry was what happened in Baotou, the world’s largest supplier of rare earths, where a former pasture was turned into a toxic lake of waste from the extraction process, “composed of a cocktail of acids, heavy metals, carcinogens, and radioactive material used to process the 17 most sought-after minerals in the world.”[1]

But this monopoly is being threatened by other capitalist powers: the US and Canada, which intend to compete with China for control of rare earth extraction. This is where the territories of Abya Yala, from the colonialist perspective of these two countries, appear as key suppliers for carrying out this plan, just as Boutu was for China. Currently, the company Minera Aclara presents itself to the outside world as a “sustainable” alternative to the Chinese extractive market and aims to compete against Chinese control through the extraction of rare earths in Goiás, Brazil, and Penco, Chile. Against Ecology — A Discussion for the Unmanageable

The catastrophe we face is not revealed in the predictions of a scientific caste, nor in the mysticism of rhythms of nature which we have never known in the duration of our artificial lives.

The catastrophe is the daily dose of poisoning which we drink voluntarily: the world of management, entertainment, democracy, technological progress and merchandise. Its power source is human drudgery and submission, turbo-charged by fossil fuels or no-less ruthlessly exploited ‘sustainable’ resources. This is the polluted wasteland which takes survival for as long as possible as its miserable horizon – at an individual level as much as at the level of the species.

In the past, struggles against the most polluting developments have been orientated by ecology but now it is acting as a brake on their potential.

The fumes of ideology can be more suffocating than greenhouse gasses. If we are not careful, we will be led directly into the embrace of a transformed authority – eagerly drawing on the moral fury of the green movement, and all too happy to continue to govern on a necessarily planetary scale.

We need fresh ideas and action to break with the stifling atmosphere of the moment and to arm the struggles of the near future. We need to move beyond ecology, and enter the dimension of a revolt without excuses, without demands and without return to normality.
