Chile: Autonomy and Persistence Against Prisons: Words from compañera Mónica Caballero

Posted on 2024/06/19 by darknights

June 8, 2024

Almost a month ago I was transferred to the prison where I will have to serve my sentence, the CPF of Santiago. This prison has a rather atypical structure in comparison to other prisons in this territory, since in some areas it maintains the foundations of the old convent that fulfilled the “correctional work for bad women”, from there different modules and sections have been built. Among the sections that were built to segregate specific groups of women prisoners are the following: Special High Security Section (SEAS), New Hope and Direct Custody.

SEAS was created mainly to house prisoners for crimes of political violence in the 90’s. In those years, those prisoners belonged to political/military/subversive groups (FPMR, MIR, Mapu-Lautaro1). With the release of the political prisoners, little by little, those with a history of escapes and/or refractory to the prison regime and leaders of trafficking gangs began to occupy the High Security Prison. It was not until 2010 that the women prisoners for political violence returned to the SEAS, the first “Bomb Case2” allowed the first anti-authoritarian women to take up the thread of struggle left by the first political prisoners. Over the years the SEAS continued with the same dynamic, until a few years ago where this section is used to keep prisoners while another permanent space is enabled for them.

Upon my arrival at this prison, I was informed that the SEAS would return to the place of yesteryear, so if or if I had to be in it. All this came to nothing because today there is a group of approximately 60 women brought from the San Miguel prison, these women live in deplorable conditions.

Another of these special modules is “Nueva Esperanza”, which has only and exclusively women for crimes against humanity, all these prisoners were responsible for some of the many atrocities that occurred during the dictatorship, I am referring to torture, disappearances, permanent kidnappings, murders, etc. Most of these women are former members of the F.F.A.A.*** and of the security forces. Although I do not know the living conditions of the torturers, since special care is taken in everything that surrounds them, but even so I would dare to say that they live in a place more like a rest home than a prison.

Finally, there is the module that I am currently in, Direct Custody. This section was born out of the need to segregate prisoners for violent and high-profile crimes, and over the years this has been maintained to some extent. This section has also been used to keep very specific cases of women for political violence, among these was a former militant of the FPMR and now me.

Since I entered this prison, both my comrades and I have requested through the different bureaucratic instances of the gendarmerie the authorization to continue my university studies, which I started in 2022 in San Miguel prison. This has not been authorized.

A little more than two years ago, I became the first inmate in Santiago to start university studies while I was in preventive prison. A matter that was not without problems, which one by one were solved thanks to the set of solidary wills that made that until today I am studying my third year as a student in the career of Law.

In this prison I have not been able to resume my studies because according to the information provided by the gendarmerie staff, the only thing missing is the authorization of the Regional Director, who can take as much time as he deems convenient to simply manage the continuity of something that has been going on for years.

It seems incredible that the facilities are not given and that obstacles are put in the way of something that seems to be as basic and essential as studying, we cannot ignore that the power structures are capable of breaking their own rules over and over again, according to their convenience.
What is it that the high command of the gendarmerie fears in order to give course to the authorization that does not allow me to study? Do they have direct orders from the Ministry of Justice or another organism? Or is it that they are apprehensive that if they give the authorization the prison population knows that there is no legal impediment that does not allow them to have higher education while in prison? Or perhaps they are exhausting all instances to prevent a prisoner (which they call common, but they maintain quite “uncommon” regimes) to have legal knowledge? Whatever the answer is, I demand that they comply with their own laws and allow me to maintain my university studies.

For this I appeal to all forms of solidarity that can pressure the regional and national directorate of gendarmerie to give course to the relevant authorizations so that I can continue my studies.

With all this I reaffirm that for greater degrees of autonomy the only option for those of us who choose the path of denial against domination is the persistent struggle, which would remain within these walls if it were not for the dozens of hands of solidarity.

Santiago, Chile: Incendiary attacks at Internado Barros Arana, Liceo Manuel Barros Borgoño, Instituto Nacional and Liceo de Aplicación 5 years after Kevin Garrido’s death

Posted on 2023/11/26 - 2023/11/26 by darknights

On November 3 and 4, four high schools in Santiago agitated with leaflets, banners, barricades and confrontations with Molotov cocktails against the presence of carabineros (COP), in commemoration of the comrade Kevin Garrido murdered five years ago inside Santiago 1. Refreshing his memory, we share a brief account of his life trajectory:

In the early morning of November 19, 2015, eighteen-year-old Kevin, in complicity with the night, went on his bicycle to the perimeter of the gendarmerie school of San Bernardo, armed with a bomb, a lighter and a knife. After the detonation, the filthy police, who were already on his trail after a long investigation, captured him a few meters from the place, and simultaneously, Joaquín García was kidnapped from his home, leaving both of them in captivity in the filthy high security prison, specifically in the maximum security section. Accusing both of the explosive attack ( thwarted) to the 12th police station of carabineros of San Miguel (October 29, 2015), bomb “composed of a 6 kilogram fire extinguisher filled with more than 3 kilos of black powder, about 100 4-inch nails and 50 1-inch nails inside to function as shrapnel, a 1 liter bottle of sulfuric acid and two one-liter bottles with benzine, all this activated by remote control, consisting of a cell phone connected to a 2.5 volt light bulb modified as a detonator”, claimed by International Conspiracy for Revenge/Deflagration Cell Gerasimos Tsakalos, also for an explosive attack to the electricity company Chilectra (October 16, 2015) claimed by the Karr-kai Cell and the explosive attack against the gendarmerie school in San Bernardo (November 19, 2015), the latter two attacks linked only to Kevin. [DN Note: All three attacks have been translated below for reference]

After 7 months in captivity, Kevin asks to be transferred to the prison/slaughterhouse Santiago 1.

On June 15, 2018, the inquisitorial trial of the comrades begins, declaring them guilty on August 15; Joaquín for illegal possession of a firearm, which he was carrying at the time of being captured while he was in hiding after breaking a total house arrest measure, and also for the attack on the 12th police station in San Miguel, together with Kevin, who was also found guilty of the explosive attack on the gendarmerie school in San Bernardo. On September 5, 2018 they are sentenced to a total of 13 years in prison for Joaquín and 17 years for Kevin.

On November 2, when going down to the yard, the comrade is involved in a fight with another prisoner, which seemed to be one of the many daily conflicts that are lived in that place, being lethally wounded; without receiving timely medical assistance, he is transferred already deceased from Santiago 1 an hour and a quarter later to the external hospital “Barros Luco”.

Banners and pamphlets read: “Fire to the prisons and to those who sustain them. Every death in prison is a State crime. Kevin Garrido present”, “Down with the cages of civilized society”, “Long live terror, explosions and fire”, “Five years after the murder of comrade Kevin Garrido. We call for a black November in memory of those fallen in the social/anti-social war” and “Joaquín García to the streets”.

Below are some pictures of the events:

$hile: Words by compañero Lucas Hernández. 6 months after the arrests for the Gendarmerie Case

Words by compañero Lucas Hernández. Six months after the arrests for the Gendarmerie Case.

“For me there was no opposite to freedom but death. I did not conceive the term prison or jail as anything other than a synonym for death…” Juan José Garfia

Months go by without much novelty, inserted in this redoubt of the underworld, which silences and hides. It is difficult to understand that your mobility is guarded and limited at every moment. It is easy to nourish myself with hate. If my eyes see daily officials, abuses, bars and uniforms in this implanted and repugnant routine, which overwhelms and suffocates.

But that does not paralyze or torment. Neither their punishments nor their decorated uniforms make me doubt my ideas and position in the face of this system of domination. In this process I have had the good fortune to live and experience political imprisonment with various comrades. Supporting each other, but we will not always be together, nor close, nor prisoners. Anti-prison solidarity has brought us together.

Captivity can suffocate, exhaust, but never defeat me… this prison process has reaffirmed how little I believe in. A joyful disappointment in those I once called brothers and sisters… today there are few I still love.

Any kind of pretensions I always wanted them aside, protagonists towards their spectacles. I am just a stealthy anarchist, brother to my siblings, and an avowed enemy of this or any state. Incendiary outbreak at Liceo de Aplicación in memory of Mauricio Morales

On Monday, May 22, a rally was held in the vicinity of the Liceo de Aplicación leading to barricades and confrontations with Molotov cocktails against the presence of the Carabineros (COP) in memory of comrade Mauricio Morales who died in combat when he detonated in advance the explosive device he was trying to install in the Gendarmerie School in 2009.

Banners and leaflets were read: “May 22nd, day of chaos”, “Before sleeping I embrace kaos. For a May as black as gunpowder. Mauricio Morales”, ” There are still backpacks like Punky Mauri’s”, “Mauricio Morales present, let anarchy live”, “14 years after your departure, you are still alive in our anarchist hearts and souls.”

Below are some records:

Words for compañero Punki Mauri by Joaquín García Chancks

From the other side of the walls, I extend an affectionate and anarchic embrace to all those who participate in this already historic activity.

It is incredible the passage of time, it would be terribly false of me to speak of a closeness to anarchist circles back in 2009, I think I felt part of an anarchist collectivity, if you can call it that, shortly after, enough for the loss of a comrade to still be felt so close to the surface.

Mauricio Morales transcends, he is an inevitable reference for many -no matter how hard one fights to destroy that idealized and stereotyped image that this same anarchic “we” has been in charge of propagating through time- that is the truth, one cannot think of May without considering this date, one cannot whisper attack without thinking of Mauricio, one cannot conspire to attack without the palpable experience that sometimes things do not work out well; It is what endows history with reality, what makes us shake off all the theory and put our feet on the ground, the seriousness of what confrontation means, the knowledge that what may be so costly for us will not be so costly for Power…. To assume that no action will bring us an anarchic tomorrow, that the becoming is lived day by day, and that the only way to obtain a little bit of freedom is to embrace antagonism as a present, of theory and praxis, word and action, morality and attack. If we are to find something clear, almost undeniable in Mauricio, let it be this symbiosis.

Words by Marcelo Villarroel in subversive memory of Mauricio Morales

“I will seek at the risk of my life the best, the authentic freedom…”

Mauricio Morales.-

– From prison and 14 years after the death in action of comrade Mauricio Morales, a greeting of insurrectional memory and an eternal war cry for all those who walk the same path of struggle.

On the night of May 22, 2009, a powerful explosion shook the surroundings of the Gendarmerie School, a prison repressors’ factory, in the Matta neighborhood, in the south-central area of Santiago de Chile.

The explosion mortally wounded the Punky Mauri, who was on his way by bicycle to attack with an artifact, the main redoubt for the formation of penitentiary officers, seeking to strike with anarchic vengeance the place from where the most detestable beings that prison society can produce are mass-produced. Chile: Text of Mónica Caballero in response to the state assassination of Milena Cartes

Posted on 2022/02/02 - 2022/02/03 by darknights

Once again death took a walk around San Miguel, and as on other occasions, the door was opened for her by those who anecdotally work closing them, the Chilean Gendarmerie.

On Saturday, January 29, in a macabre coincidence, Milena Cartes, confined in Tower 5, died after a week of ailments. Tower 5 was the same place where more than 10 years ago 81 prisoners died in a fire.

At the moment the information that has been disseminated about the causes of death of Milena is appendicitis, which worsened to peritonitis, something that (without being an expert) if it had been treated in time is not fatal. Cases like Milena’s in Chilean prisons are counted by the hundreds, there is a long list of deaths in prison due to avoidable circumstances and medical negligence, to which we could add the deaths that no one bothered to investigate.

The death of Milena Cartes will be forgotten unless the real reasons for her death are not disclosed.

Gendarmerie will try to hide and/or disguise what happened.
