10th DAY OF THE HUNGER STRIKE OF GIANNIS MICHAILIDIS

Update from today’s intervention at ESIEA

The assembly in solidarity with the hunger striker Giannis Michailidis, who has been on hunger strike since 23/5, held an intervention today at the ESIEA building, in order to give visibility to the struggle of his comrade. As soon as the intervention started, the vice president of ESIEA was negative even with the hanging of the banner. We made it clear to him that we had come with the specific purpose of highlighting the hunger strike and that we would leave when we felt that the comrade’s hunger strike had been sufficiently highlighted. He threatened us that he would call the police and we replied that we would not leave the building until we had left safely and had achieved our purpose. He ordered all the telephone lines and computers in the building to be shut down to prevent the propaganda of the action.

We are not in a position to know if the vice president ultimately called the cops or if they came on their own. Two Delta groups (Motorcycle cops) came to the scene and even without any legitimacy they entered the ground floor and threatened us with arrest. We re-stated that we would not leave unless the police forces left.The determination of the solidarity groups to remain in the building made it clear to the president that in order to end the intervention the cops had to leave.

The banner was hung from the rooftop and leaflets were thrown.

About the choice to intervene in the ESIEA

We have no illusions about the mainstream media. However, against the constant tactic of the state apparatus to silence the hunger strikes, we had to intervene in order to make the demand for the immediate release of Giannis Michailidis heard. After 8.5 years in prison, after all these arbitrary actions against me, I decided to put an end to my 11 years of suffering, by putting a stop to the practice of pre-trial detention, or the additional punishment of escape through legal loopholes. After 5 more months of pre-trial detention, I start a hunger strike for my release. This choice, with the deep motivation of the much desired freedom, I intend to support it with the same consistency that I have supported my choices so far and for which I am being persecuted.

For 11 years I have experienced state vengeance against choices in line with my values and ideas. The difficult journey, from which I choose to share some blatant vengeful acts of arbitrariness against me, began in the distant 2011, when an arrest warrant was issued against me for the Conspiracy of Cells of Fire case, for which I was eventually acquitted as there was not the slightest connection between me and the charge against me. It was the incrimination of a relationship of solidarity with wanted anarchists that put me in their place when they were arrested.

After 2 years of being on the run, I too am now walking through the heavy doors of prison, as the existence of a warrant that entails a decade of incarceration has led to certain choices and consequent mistakes. The comrades who were arrested at the time in the bank robbery in Velvento, Kozani, were tortured by the police, which is common, and then the Ministry of Public Order published photos of our swollen faces, provoking a public reaction. Of course, no police officer was accused of this by the blind Greek justice system. This morning, comrades held an intervention at the Athens Bar Association in solidarity with the anarchist hunger striker Giannis Michailidis. A banner was hung from the floor, banners were thrown, and texts were distributed to inform about the comrade’s hunger strike.

“The comrade’s demand for his immediate release is a struggle to break the vindictive practice of preventive incarceration and acquires special weight because political prisoners, due to their political choices, are the frontline of the social – class war. The struggle of the comrade for his release is therefore not a narrow struggle that concerns him exclusively. It is a militant choice as a whole against a regime of exclusion arbitrarily and abusively imposed against any prisoner who has a decent attitude, but more specifically against the regime of exclusion against political prisoners, anarchists or communists. It is an integral part of the struggle for a world without prisons and barbed wire, without borders and concentration camps, without the plundering and destruction of the planet by the multinationals, without class exploitation, without rich and poor, without gender and racial oppression.

The militant and conscious start of the struggle that comrade Giannis Michailidis began on May 23, as a hunger striker, claiming his freedom from the prison hellholes, can only find me in solidarity with him, and, to the extent possible, with every means and way by his side. Unfortunately, my state of health does not allow me to unite words with action, so that I can accompany his struggle, for a short or long period, with a hunger strike.

I want to hope that the knowledge and experience gained a year ago from the movement, when it clashed with the same state mechanisms to justify D. It has left those who participated with a qualitative basis on which to recombine thought and action in more effective ways, leading collective solidarity to rise again as our weapon against the authoritarian rodents, like a sharp blade, cutting the state chains that vindictively hold a comrade captive and opening the way to freedom.

Good strength, all of us together have nothing and no one to fear.

The fear for freedom is stronger than all the others (fear in the heart belongs more to the bosses)

Berlin, Germany: Burning of Hertz truck – not only for hunger striker Michailidis

We use simple means to sabotage the enemy’s infrastructure. That the car rental company Hertz is an enemy became known not only after an attack on their branch* and further fires of their vehicle fleet in Athens. Not only the Greek police is equipped by Hertz with vehicles at preferential conditions, but also in other states active and former cops and military are supported according to self-advertisement.

Hertz is one of the companies that force the constant need for mobility. Everything and everyone must always be immediately available everywhere. Delivery services, rental vehicles and Uber now dominate traffic in cities. Along the way, they create data collections about moving things and people for the police’s tracing computers, Hertz also by filming drivers while they drive.

In the social war and in the war state against state, we stand flagless on the side of the oppressed against the oppressors and Hertz stands on the side of power, sometimes under the Greek flag in the jeeps of OPKE, sometimes under the US flag on the trucks of the National Guard or under the flag of capital on their vans, with which they profit in Germany from the compulsion of the citizens to constantly move to another place from expensive apartments.

On the night of May 25, we set fire to a Hertz truck in the northern Berlin district of Reinickendorf as a minimal sign of our solidarity for Giannis Michailidis, who has been on hunger strike in Malandrinos prison since May 23.

We also wish Lina, who has been in pre-trial detention for 18 months, much strength and freedom.

At the same time, our action is in the framework of similar acts around the world that burn to ashes everything that can be useful for the war.

Athens, Greece: Responsibility claim for the incendiary attack in Pefkis-Lykovrisi – To burn the beast of gentrification to the ground by Thousands of Suns of the Night

On 27/04 we placed incendiary devices in the offices of the Nea Dimokratia (New Democracy) Pefkis-Lykovrisi, burning them completely outside and a large part inside, essentially closing the office.

We hold this party accountable for a series of actions that form the backbone of the Greek state’s agenda.

Redevelopment-Regeneration-Repatriation-Suppression

From the beginning of its term of office, ND as a government has shown its intentions on the issue of the city. The Athenian centre is constantly being shaped as a luxury showcase for global and European tourism. This process started and accelerated already in the years of the covid-19 boom when hundreds of thousands of euros were given for the construction of the Grand Walk (pet gentrification project of Athens mayor Kostas Bakoyannis). Public space is increasingly occupied by goods and consumers. Universities and spaces that once seemed to be meeting points for movements and collective processes are now being cleared, controlled and mapped with cameras and cops (ΟΠΠΙ, university cops). The state’s attempt to turn the Gini polytechnic into a monument in a move of gentrification is also characteristic. At the same time, student movements are subjected to extreme repression, with typical examples being the pressure in other universities such as the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, as well as the case of the 14 students who are being persecuted under the umbrella of manipulating DNA files. In continuation of the pressure on the anarchist movement with reference to meeting places is the continuous repression of the occupations in the centre of Athens and Thessaloniki.

Of course, along with all the above comes the redevelopment of squares, parks and hills. The criminal collaboration of the state with capital leads to the appearance of construction sites and dust in the squares, security barriers, blocking of work sites, extra security with security and cops and as expected: displacement of the poor, the marginalized, migrant women. Even the few places that the poor, the people from below, the people of our class had to catch their breath, are being forcibly taken away from them. This plan is being carried out all over the centre, from Galatsi and Pagrati to the most migrant neighbourhoods, Kypseli Square, Protomaya Square and soon Exarcheia Square. Athens, Greece: Responsibility claim – Incendiary attack on General Post Office vehicles

For more than a decade we have been experiencing the invasion of capital on our lives, through the neoliberal restructuring of the relations of production. The cycle that opened during the period of the memoranda has never closed, but instead the state and the bosses are upgrading and deepening their domination and exploitation to this day.

The present condition should not be superficially assessed by the movement as a setback in relation to a social democratic period of a different balance of forces, workers’ conquests and gains. In fact, the previous period finally prepared the ground for the current selection. Social democracy, as the last political stage of the capitalist model of production, aims at securing the necessary consensus needed by the political system to validate the continuous and intensifying capitalist restructurings. The social and political assimilation of the working class has taken place decades ago since the radical and subversive movements retreated by surrendering to the welfare states, institutional trade unionism and finally abandoning the revolutionary perspective.

The mosaic that composes the contemporary reality in Western societies places the proletarian struggle in a symbolic position of workers’ mobilizations and demands. By recognizing the workers as the only subject of its conduct, they exclude those most affected by the capitalist juggernaut, that is, those excluded from the capitalist means of survival, labour, as well as those who are even lower down. As long as this body is excluded from the class struggle the threat of privatisation and individualisation of a struggle, which inevitably takes the form of resistance and simple survival and the dissipation of our misery, takes on flesh and blood. Solidarity among all the oppressed is a necessary ingredient for overthrow and emancipation. Rome, Italy: Texts and materials distributed during the initiative of 26/11/21 at Bencivenga + Contributions of Alfredo Cospito and Juan Sorroche

We receive and publish a series of texts and materials distributed during the initiative in solidarity with the Chilean prisoners, held at the Bencivenga Occupato on November 26, 2021. Two booklets: one on the hunger strike conducted by prisoners in Chile, the other is a collection of texts, many translated from the magazine Kalinov Most, which were intended to better focus the topics of the debate: the specific reality of Chilean prisons, solidarity, fight against prison. There are also two contributions of Juan and Alfredo for the initiative, which they asked to be disseminated.

UNTIL THE DESTRUCTION OF THE PRISON-SOCIETY

This initiative was born with the need to send, in our own small way, a gesture of solidarity to the comrades prisoners in Chile who in the first months of this year have undertaken two hard hunger strikes. We want to support them, also through the translations contained in the pamphlets prepared for this meeting, by spreading the determination with which they have carried out their struggle inside the prison, with the aim of feeling it closer to us who are outside those walls and far from those territories. Although at the end of their mobilization the prisoners did not get all that they demanded, it still allowed them to build and establish bonds of complicity, both inside and outside the prison. Ties that have made this struggle transcend barriers and borders and that, since it has clearly positioned itself against all forms of coercion and domination, have made it recognizable and vindicable by refractory people all over the world.

But it is not for simple voyeurism towards distant rebellions that we are here today. With this initiative we also intend to underline our complicity with our comrades who today are prisoners of the State, so that they know that they are not alone. Also in this part of the world we have anarchist prisoners who have recently conducted several struggles inside the prison. Struggles conducted individually or collectively, strikes and mass uprisings such as those of March 2020 against pandemic management inside prisons. Struggles whose quality, to take up a concept expressed with emphasis in the contribution that Juan, a prisoner in the Terni prison, wrote for this initiative, is closely related to the relationships that exist between inside and outside the prison. These relationships are the same on which prisoners and Chilean comrades have repeatedly insisted, stating that “the prison is part of the options of the struggle, it is part of it and therefore, instead of being a parenthesis or a pause, it is configured as one more scenario in which to carry out the clash” and that it is necessary to understand “the prisoner as an active comrade, in struggle, who is in this particular condition as a result of a chosen path that does not end within [those] four walls”. Relationships in which it is necessary to invest if we want to recognize a prisoner as our comrade, as a complicit in the struggle against all power, especially at this time when these relationships are under attack. The latest repressive operations in Italy have in fact, among others, the purpose of hitting the communication between the world outside and inside the prison, putting pressure on the epistolary communication through which prisoners continue to be part of the anarchist debate and struggle, providing reflections, contributions, proposals for action and stimuli for action. Now more than ever it is therefore the time to increase efforts in the direction of greater communication and complicity with the prisoners, having as its objective not mere support in the charitable way, but rather the reinforcement of our offensive capacity against this system of domination and exploitation. Italy: Updates concerning Mauro Rossetti Busa

Mauro Busa tells us that since November his mail has been under censorship again up until 22^nd May, subject to extension. He is continuing to do hunger strikes (he also writes about self-harming, for example cuts, but it is not clear whether this refers to the present or the past) in order to be transferred near Lucca so that he can see his family whom he hasn’t seen since 2018.

Mauro was sentenced to 12 years of imprisonment for fire, evasion and manufacture of explosive material, threats and with the aggravating circumstance of recidivism and social danger. The original attacks took place in the vicinity of the Casapound headquarters and to the Eni distributor in Sant’Anna in 2018. The Eni distributor, the multinational is for some time in the sights of anarchists for activities abroad, and a building near the Casapound headquarters. Previously, Mauro Rossetti Busa had succeeded in Florence, in March 2004, in an attack on a public prosecutor. During the hearing his convictions were unwavering: “I’ll send you a packet-bomb, the next one will be for you and these cops,” he said.
