Solidarity with those in hiding and prisoners

Almost a year ago, on February 26, 2024, Daniela Klette was arrested in her Kreuzberg apartment and has been in custody in Vechta Prison ever since.

She is accused of various expropriation actions, as well as the successful demolition of the prison in Weiterstadt in 1993, which was carried out by the Red Army Faction (RAF).

The first trial is about to begin in March of this year at the Verden District Court.

After Daniela’s arrest, Berlin became a scene of heavily armed uniformed men in military style trying to outdo each other in the level of escalation. Disputes over jurisdiction within the various repressive authorities at federal and state level at least provided some amusement in a week that was otherwise overshadowed by the cops’ show of force and lurid articles in the media. Houses were evacuated, various properties were searched, tanks drove through the streets and the German state showed that it does not forget.

This escalation by the repressive authorities was followed by further measures that illustrate their determination to persecute. For example, an extensive public search was carried out for the other two accused – Burkhard Garweg and Ernst-Volker Staub. The treacherous face of parts of German society has been shown above all in the fact that time and again, most recently at the counter-protests against a Nazi march in Berlin Friedrichshain, cops arrest people who are named by denunciators who see the manhunt as an event, incited by the smear campaigns of Springer and Co.

Calls for denunciation and manhunts as happenings do not appear to be a remnant of the RAF era, nor is it just a matter of “settling old scores”. Since the G20 summit in Hamburg, public calls for manhunts have once again become a widespread method used by the cops in cooperation with the relevant media and, in addition to the persecution of our companions in various investigations throughout Germany, we have to observe how even banal offenses lead to pictures of the suspects in the press and on billboards. Italy: Statement of Alfredo Cospito during the preliminary hearing for the “Sibilla Trial”

We publish the statements read by some of the anarchist comrades accused in the Sibilla trial in the preliminary hearing held on the 15^th of January in Perugia. Amongst the defendants, is also Alfredo Cospito, who attended by videoconference from Bancali prison in (Sardinia) where he is locked up in the 41bis regime, who read a statement. The hearing ended with a dismissal of all charges against all defendants, bringing to a conclusion an infamous case, which apart from aiming at the silencing of anarchist revolutionary publications, had a central role in Alfredo’s transfer to the 41bis regime. For a few hours Alfredo was able to hear the voices of his comrades, to see their faces, to speak, breaking the wall of silence in which they are trying to bury him. And this is certainly more stirring than any decision made by any state bureaucrat. In particular, Alfredo’s own words resonate as a powerful denunciation against the totalitarian horror of the 41bis regime. Those children’s handprints on the dividing glass in the visiting room should shake the consciences, of those who still have a conscience.

We do not know to what extent the intervention of the comrades in the courtroom somehow influenced the court’s decision not to venture into a shaky trial in itself. However, on January 15, it became clear that subsequent potential hearings would also undoubtedly provide an opportunity to intervene, breaking the wall of isolation of the 41bis, on behalf of Alfredo and the other accused comrades. Certainly, it should not take a trial like this one to initiate moments of mobilization against the international shame of 41 bis, and in Alfredo’s specific case, as of today the justifications for confinement in this special regime have one important piece missing. To make them pay the price for this contradiction, it is more urgent than ever to undertake other paths and revitalize initiatives against 41 bis and the warmongering and repressive policies of States.

Today, you the representatives of the judiciary branch of this republic are putting us on trial for writing on the walls, for our words, for our books and magazines, forcing, as a matter of fact, anarchy into clandestinity. We are in good company, with this post-fascist government, censorship and repression are expanding to the entire social body, accelerating the transition from totalitarian democracy to a tragicomic opera regime. Saying this, I must thank you: after a year of silence, thanks to your embarrassing and anachronistic prosecution, I am allowed to express my thought publicly. Even if remotely, even if for the brief time of a blink of an eye, today I can tear off the gag, the medieval bridle of a 41bis that a moderate left-wing government applied to me years ago to silence an uncomfortable voice, for however minor and irrelevant, however surely an enemy of your democracy. These two years of special regime have most definitely opened my eyes to the true face of your law, of your constitutional rights, revealing to me a criminogenic system composed of an obscene, crude and murderous totalitarianism.

Today in this courtroom we are undergoing an inquisitorial trial based on an interview given through regular prison mail and not through a conversation with my sister in a prison visit as the prosecution wants us to believe, dragging her to the courthouse only for the mere fact of continuing undeterred to attend prison visits with her brother. It is a classic strategy of all authoritarian regimes, used regularly in the 41 bis regime, to burn all bridges with all emotional bonds at the exterior of the prison.

It is indicative, with every visit I attend, to see children’s handprints on the security glass that separates them from their fathers or mothers. Milan, Italy: Everyone hates the police

On Sunday night [November 24, in Milan], Ramy Elgaml died after falling from the scooter he was riding on with a friend, pursued by the carabinieri for several kilometers.
Ramy was a 19-year-old boy who lived in Corvetto.
Since his death was announced, numerous boys and girls, his friends, have gathered on the street at the crash site, alongside his family.
Soon the pain of his death turned into anger and a thirst for truth regarding what had happened.
The night between Sunday and Monday there were moments of clashes with the police in the streets of the working-class neighborhood where he lived, where someone had started to set fire to trash bins and rubbish.
Even on Monday evening, for a few hours, normalcy came to a halt, and in its place appeared burning barricades and groups of people clashing with the police, who responded by launching numerous tear gas canisters in an attempt to disperse the crowd, which, however, did not let itself be intimidated.
Ramy’s death is probably the straw that broke the camel’s back. Those who come from the working-class neighborhoods deal with the police every day, for one reason or another. He knows the arrogance and violence of the cops and knows well what a police stop means.

And that’s how the anger grows.

At the end of Monday evening, a 21-year-old boy was arrested and taken to San Vittore while in Corvetto the anger and the melted plastic from the bins on the asphalt remain.
Ramy will live in the hearts of his family and friends, in the anger that will set the streets on fire.
Cops out of the neighborhoods.
Freedom for all.

Realities Behind the Arrest of Nikos Romanos

This is an attempt to provide information and context for those outside Greece concerning the recent state abduction of anarchist Nikos Romanos.

On 31 October, 2024, an explosion in the Athens neighborhood of Ampelokopoi killed the comrade Kyriakos X and severely injured the comrade Marianna M.

They were both in an apartment where an explosive device detonated, knocking out one wall of the building. The state claims they were planning to detonate a bomb elsewhere and that it exploded prematurely. Both Kyriakos and Marianna are anarchists, respected participants in the movement.

The press in Greece is owned by a handful of old families who control most of the remaining greek assets– those that haven’t been sold off to foreign investors. The Greek mainstream media exists to disseminate state narratives, and it immediately began slandering the victims of the explosion as well as engaging in wild speculation– such as that the israeli embassy was the intended target. Whether or not that’s true, it is true that israeli mossad agents came to assist the Greek police in their investigations. Since the explosion, the state has made additional arrests of people it claims are somehow connected to the apartment and its lease, sublease, etc.

As the Greek press promoted the propaganda of the state, there commenced activity in some cowardly corners of the left to distinguish the more “guilty” of those accused from the others. This is the question of who to tar with the labels of “anarchist” and “terrorist” — thereby assumed to deserve repression– vs. who is really “innocent.”

The anarchist movement itself, both in Greece and internationally, has rejected such division and remained strong in solidarity despite a chilling increase in repression. There were multiple support gatherings outside the hospital where Marianna was held under guard and when, shortly after her second surgery, she was transferred to Korydallos prison, comrades also gathered there. Kyriakos has been honored with actions, banners, marches, events and memorials, and will remain a beloved comrade forevermore. There has been no “disavowal,” no step back.

Since the tragedy in Ampelokopoi state repression against those suspected of being “anarchists” has become more aggressive, although this is consistent with an ongoing trend since the pandemic. What we have seen now are not new tactics but an increase in frequency: police actions such as stopping and searching people around the neighborhood Exarcheia, early-morning “preventative detention” of targeted individuals (people considered politically prominent) on the days of demonstrations and marches, and an increase in surveillance of those the greek state has a grudge against, including by parking unmarked cars with surveillance equipment in front of their homes.

Few people in the anarchist movement here have been under as heavy surveillance, long-term, as the comrade Nikos Romanos. He was a friend of the anarchist Alexis Grigoropolous, and witnessed Alexis’ murder by police on 6 December 2008. Since that time Nikos has been arrested many times and accused of many crimes, along with false accusations of involvement with the direct action group Conspiracy of Cells of Fire. Ross Smith is imprisoned in the long-term high security prison HMP Garth for possession of a Skorpion submachine gun and a hand grenade. By the time Ross gets out he will have done 22 years in prison. Ross would like to hear from you and receive postcards, letters and books. He is part of the counter-culture and likes anarchist ideas, anti-art/Dada, sound-systems, nihilism, ecology and the natural world. Ross likes training and is into fitness. Ross is from North Wales. This is how he described himself:

“Free rave crew, Dub/Junglist hippie kid, been living with the middle-finger up to the state since the age of 6. Fight The System / Fuck Gun Control – FTS FGC. Started a 7 year sentence in 2016 for drugs, money laundering and constitutent parts of a Colt 1911a, got recalled for being inside an exculsion zone (my home town), got parole then 10 days later recalled for firearms and explosives, not charged then 2 days before release after serving 5 years of the 7 year sentence was charged and remanded, then given an extra 14 years 3 months after 9 month remand time deducted for a submachine gun, hand grenade and ammunition. This brings my total hostage time to over 15 years in decrepit hell-holes, the latter being a 2/3 sentence, even though no violence was committed.

Love and respect to all wishing for freedom and total destruction of the state.

I’m a lover of natural history, passionate about music and art, I was previously self-employed doing garden design, construction and maintenance in North Wales, also sub-contracting to Snowdonia national park and the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds, doing conservation work. Word comes to us from comrades in Greece that anarchist comrade Nikos Romanos has been arrested by anti-terrorist cops during an operation today in Athens and has been taken to the GADA (Athens Central Police Headquarters). All we know so far is that he has been arrested in connection with the same case involving the explosion at an apartment in the neighborhood of Ampelokipoi in Athens on 31st October.

Athens, Greece: [URGENT] Transfer of comrade Marianna to Korydallos – Call for gathering in Korydallos

The anarchist comrade Marianna, just one day after her second consecutive surgery and while remaining hospitalized as a multiple trauma patient for 15 days at Evangelismos Hospital, was transferred to Korydallos on Friday morning.

The pressures from the scum of the anti-terrorism unit, who operate in perfect collaboration with the investigator handling the case, resulted in the comrade being discharged and taken to the women’s prisons of Korydallos, where there isn’t even a hospital and thus no possibility to provide her with the appropriate care for her injuries.

We make it clear in all directions, whatever happens to our comrade, it will have consequences and will not go unanswered.

Russia: Prisons must be destroyed

We defend political prisoners, but as long as prisons exist, as long as they torture and kill the most ordinary prisoners, including people who are not the most pleasant, as long as criminal cases are fabricated for the sake of “sticks” and “stars,” no one can consider themselves free.

Information about what happens behind barbed wire is rarely and belatedly received. The Verstka Telegram channel recently published information about the victims of police lawlessness in 2023. This year, at least 50 people have died in pre-trial detention centers, special reception centers, police departments, during arrests, and in police cars. These data were obtained through a thorough analysis of reports from government agencies and the media, and, of course, they are not complete.

The highest number of deaths occurred in pre-trial detention centers (SIZO) – 22 people died there over the year, 14 in police departments, five during detention, four in police cars, two in special detention facilities, and one each in court, a FSIN prisoner transport vehicle, and a hospital after being transported from SIZO.

Among the dead were 48 men and two women. The cause of death for 11 people was allegedly heart problems, another 11, according to official data, committed suicide, and nine died after they “suddenly felt bad.”

At least two people died after being tortured by police officers, one detainee in a pre-trial detention center died from a drug overdose, chronic illness, and deliberate failure to provide medical assistance, and one was killed by cellmates.
