Spoken contribution by Toby Shone for the Tattoo Circus, Bristol, 2025

Posted on 2025/12/01 - 2025/12/01 by darknights

This is from a talk by Toby at the Bristol Tattoo Circus, which took place a few weeks ago at a squatted venue in the city. After the talks and workshops there was bands, DJs and a benefit party. Free the prisoners!

Hello everyone,

Ok, we’re at Tattoo circus, my name is Toby Shone, I’m an ex-prisoner and anarchist. Tattoo Circus was started around 20 years ago in Italy as a way to fund anarchist prisoner solidarity campaigns.

I want to thank the organisers for inviting me here to speak, it’s very important as a released political prisoner to be able to come back into the community. Especially after living for a considerable amount of time distanced from the social movement. So overall, I want to communicate any lessons that can be told. Some of you already know me, so I’ll try not to bore you with what you know already, but for others I’ll just re-cap the case that I was involved in, then I’m going to simply give some anecdotes about my time in prison, and then speak about solidarity briefly.

I was arrested in the November 2020 Operation Adream case, and I was imprisoned for three years in conditions of solitary confinement and monitored for a year in line with UK-wide anti-terrorist restrictions by the National Security Division and Counter-Terror Police. From the evidence I’ve seen, it indicates that there is an ongoing investigation by the anti-terrorist units into the social movement in the South West region, and we can conclude that it’s also taking place across the country. I think it is certainly not for us to have to justify our harmlessness, but to really think about what it is going to take, long-term, for the type of social changes we’re aiming for. UK: Wildfires will begin: An interview with Toby Shone

1st June 2025

The former political prisoner talks about his anarchism, the 325 project and resisting the physical and mental jails that surround us all.

~ Interviewed by Elizabeth Vasileva ~

You recently spoke about the importance of solidarity and connections, between prisoners and with their supporters on the outside. Can you give us any examples of this kind of mutual or collective empowerment in the pushback against prison’s continuous repression?

Shortly before I was released in 2024, violent cell searches by a tactical unit of prison guards known as the National Search Team took place on C-wing of HMP Garth in Leyland, where I was being held. The NST took over the wing with dogs and riot gear. Cell by cell the raid took place with a lot of pointlessly brutal drama. In ones and twos we were handcuffed and placed in a locked wet room. Some prisoners were beaten, abused and a lot of our things were trashed. Some of the guys fought back, flooded their cells, banged their doors or played music really loud as a protest. The next day the whole wing refused to go back into their cells after the early morning unlock hour. As a cacophonous and unruly mob we demanded the immediate return of seized items, the replacement of damaged items and denounced the violence. This lead to the screws backing off. There was nothing at that moment that the screws could do because we all acted together, and without any leader. At the end of the lunch period, the stop-out ended.

Similar things happened in my experience when one of the prisoners was killed by depression or hopelessness. Demonstrations outside the prisons where I was held also were a strong experience that had an impact upon the guards and us. Especially when the fireworks exploded across the night sky and the comrades outside were militant. I found other prisoners to be generally supportive of each other in the roughly anti-system and criminal environment. Whenever I was transferred or moved to a different cell, the local guys usually would come to check if I was okay and if I needed anything. I helped other guys with their legal cases or prison admin, and tried to find common points of interest and subversion. We’d try to back each other, and if I had some problem, the guys would be voicing their demands too. There’s refusals and kick-offs being made in most of the prisons around the country each day about conditions and treatment. I lost track of the number of prison labour refusals and walkouts I heard about when I was inside, they are very common, as is getting on the netting that separates the landings to protest about treatment and poor conditions.

When I heard that comrades outside were carrying out revolutionary solidarity, that is when I felt our power inside the prison, I can say. From hearing about the direct actions with the Adream case in Chile, France, Italy, Indonesia and around the world, to the phone-call interventions that I was able to make from inside prison to meetings of comrades on the outside, I could feel the warmth from the comrades. Also knowing about the censored letters and books, the solidarity funds and benefit events, it was great.

For readers who don’t know 325, what can you tell us about the project and its content?

325 is an anarchist network of counter-information and direct action. In November 2020, Dutch counter-terrorist police took down the nostate.net server which held the 325 website, upon request from their German and English colleagues. The website was a long-running information clearing house of general news, reports, communiques, publications, event listings, etc. Mostly the website covered Europe, Latin America and South East Asia. 325 is also a hard-copy magazine which comes out on an intermittent basis, and dozens of publications have been published by the collective, including the newsletter Dark Nights, which has it’s own website.

Over the years, 325 has participated in an evolving participatory international network based on direct action and the support of prisoners, as well as providing space for various tendencies of anarchist, anti-capitalist and anti-civilisation groups. In recent issues of the magazine the analysis has shifted slightly to the profound new industrial changes in production and technology, such as artificial intelligence, life sciences and automation. The archive of the 325 site is an important document of social and armed revolutionary struggle over a number of years in Europe and internationally. The project started in 2003 and continues. GATHERING IN SOLIDARITY WITH THE ANARCHISTS ACCUSED IN SCRIPTA SCELERA OPERATION – MASSA, FEBRUARY 28, 2025

poster pdf

August 8th, 2023. Following a request for ten arrests in prison, Scripta Scelera operation leads to nine precautionary measures against as many anarchists accused for the publication and distribution of the internationalist anarchist fortnightly ‘Bezmotivny’.

A proceeding with which the State intended to ‘normalise’ the precautionary measures for charges concerning revolutionary publications. Scripta Scelera represents another ‘chapter’ in the war policies of the Italian state, in continuity among other things with recent repressive manoeuvres aimed at removing political practicability from ever wider social sectors.

February 28th, 2025. After one year, the trial against four accused comrades is coming to an end. Public prosecutor Manotti of the DDAA (“Anti-Mafia and Anti-Terrorism District Directorate”) of Genoa will deliver his indictment, with the requests for sentencing. Regardless of the prosecutor’s inquisitorial hypotheses on alleged instigatory and terrorist capabilities, the reasons that the State intends to strike are the ones of those who opposed the war also by denouncing the Italian industries involved in the production of armaments, as well as those who supported the 2022-’23 mobilisation against 41 bis prison regime and life imprisonment without the possibility of parole developed with Alfredo Cospito’s hunger strike.

WE WILL MEET ON FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 28th, IN MASSA:
12:00 h. – SOLIDARITY GATHERING IN PIAZZA FELICE PALMA
15:00 h. – PRESENCE IN FRONT OF THE COURT IN PIAZZA DE GASPERI

Berlin, Germany: Freedom & Happiness – Call for a demonstration in solidarity with Daniela Klette on 22.02.25 – 18:30 – Oranienplatz

Stop state terrorism

Solidarity with those in hiding and prisoners

Almost a year ago, on February 26, 2024, Daniela Klette was arrested in her Kreuzberg apartment and has been in custody in Vechta Prison ever since.

She is accused of various expropriation actions, as well as the successful demolition of the prison in Weiterstadt in 1993, which was carried out by the Red Army Faction (RAF).

The first trial is about to begin in March of this year at the Verden District Court.

After Daniela’s arrest, Berlin became a scene of heavily armed uniformed men in military style trying to outdo each other in the level of escalation. Disputes over jurisdiction within the various repressive authorities at federal and state level at least provided some amusement in a week that was otherwise overshadowed by the cops’ show of force and lurid articles in the media. Houses were evacuated, various properties were searched, tanks drove through the streets and the German state showed that it does not forget.

This escalation by the repressive authorities was followed by further measures that illustrate their determination to persecute. For example, an extensive public search was carried out for the other two accused – Burkhard Garweg and Ernst-Volker Staub. The treacherous face of parts of German society has been shown above all in the fact that time and again, most recently at the counter-protests against a Nazi march in Berlin Friedrichshain, cops arrest people who are named by denunciators who see the manhunt as an event, incited by the smear campaigns of Springer and Co.

Calls for denunciation and manhunts as happenings do not appear to be a remnant of the RAF era, nor is it just a matter of “settling old scores”. Since the G20 summit in Hamburg, public calls for manhunts have once again become a widespread method used by the cops in cooperation with the relevant media and, in addition to the persecution of our companions in various investigations throughout Germany, we have to observe how even banal offenses lead to pictures of the suspects in the press and on billboards. Italy: Demonstration following the arrests of 3 May (Genoa, 31 May 2024)

Posted on 2024/05/31 by darknights

On Friday 3 May eight people were arrested in front of Ex Latteria Occupata with the accusations of aggravated resistance and injuries and for one of the people also outraged and refusal to provide general information. Those who were there that evening is well aware how power works. He knows how absurd the reactions of the cops, complaints and requests of the public prosecutor are. Currently all the defendants have precautionary measures: seven of them have daily signatures and one signatures, the obligation to stay and the night return. A few days ago the news arrived that the prosecutor again requires prison for everything. Evidently we try to give a legal justification to a disproportionate reaction of the cops to a moment of normal anger, which can be shared by anyone every day the militarization and gentrification of this city lives, increasingly invaded by puppets in uniform. Since we do not recognize courts nor divided our answer is always the same: to go to the street and to pour our anger against those who try to suffocate every dissent and all existence that does not conform to a showcase thrown to the mass tourism & sold off by the businessmen who have recently risen.

On May 31, see you in Piazza della Commenda at 18:00 in solidarity with the arrested.

Athens, Greece: On an international day of action in solidarity with the arrested comrade D.Klette and comrades E.Staub and B.Garweg, who are persecuted as members of the RAF

Posted on 2024/05/07 by darknights

On Sunday, 14/4, responding to the call of the International Red Aid on an international day of action in solidarity with the arrested comrade D.Klette and comrades E.Staub and B.Garweg, who are persecuted as members of the RAF, we held a solidarity gathering outside the German embassy. The gathering lasted about an hour, with the comrades that participated shouting slogans. The banner was opened on Loukianou Street and leaflets were distributed.

The text of the intervention:

On February 26, 2024, after 34 years of living illegally, Daniela Klette was arrested, accused of participating in the Red Army Faction (RAF), as well as for a series of bank robberies after the dissolution of the organization in 1998. At the same time, the Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA) has launched a manhunt across Germany for Ernst Volker Staub and Burkhard Garweg. Ernst Volker Staub had been imprisoned as a member of the RAF in the 1980s and had participated in the organization’s hunger strike in German prisons in 1984.

After his release in 1988, German authorities in early 1990 issued arrest warrants for Staub, Garweg, and Klette, due to which all three went into hiding. The warrants are based on DNA samples and connect the comrades with the armed attack on the U.S. embassy in Bonn in February 1991 and the bombing attack and destruction of the under-construction Weiterstadt prison in March 1993. After the dissolution of the organization in March 1998, all three continued to live in hiding, and law enforcement authorities continued to search for them, linking them again through DNA and fingerprints to robberies of money transports and banks in various parts of Germany. Information about how the authorities reached Klette’s arrest are unclear, as the police themselves do not clearly state how they tracked her down. It is rumored that they collaborated with journalists from the investigative site Bellingcat, who, through an artificial intelligence program, identified old photos of Klette’s arrests with current photos of her on social media, as well as an anonymous tip from an informant in November 2023.

The German state continues its relentless pursuit of those who participated or are accused of participating in the organization, as if 26 years have not passed since the dissolution of the RAF. The message is clear: the state will never forget those who resist, rebel, and revolt. Prosecutions therefore aim beyond the capture of the three, to disciplining and terrorizing those who resist today, those inspired by the struggle waged by the RAF in the heart of the beast in previous decades. In the case of the three persecuted comrades, we see another campaign of terrorism and slander against the organization and the solidarity movement.

This campaign is nothing new, as for decades the German state, in close cooperation with the establishment media, has been trying desperately to dissolve what they call the “myth of the RAF,” which is nothing but the social and political legitimization of the organizations of the competitive movement of European metropolises, something that is alive and well today, as evidenced by the fact that accused members have been untraceable for three decades. Today’s reality, moreover, proves that things would be better if the global wave of rebellion, of which the RAF was a part, had succeeded. In a situation where European states are militarizing, political power becomes increasingly reactionary, societies are impoverished, and Western imperialism once again shows its teeth, bloodthirsty in Gaza, the struggles waged inside and outside prisons in European metropolises become relevant as ever.

Italy – Operation City: eighteen measures of judicial control for a demonstration against prison and 41-bis

Posted on 2024/04/30 by darknights

At dawn on Monday April 22, DIGOS issued nineteen judicial control measures against compas, as part of a repressive operation in connection with the demonstration which, on March 4, 2023, set Turin ablaze, against the prison and 41-bis, alongside anarchist prisoner Alfredo Cospito and others. A demonstration in which hammers, homemade cudgels and cobblestones struck and smashed to pieces symbols of the violence of the state and capital, and which ended right in the courtyard of Radio Blackout, surrounded by the forces of law and order: for a few hours, the insipid normality of existence in an increasingly concentrationary city was interrupted.

Three house arrests for comrades from Turin, Cuneo and Rome, seven residency obligations with daily check-in with the cops, one residency ban, eight obligations with daily check-in with the cops, 75 comrades under investigation, all over Italy. They called this umpteenth repressive operation, coordinated by the Turin Public Prosecutor’s Office (prosecutors Paolo Scavi and Enzo Bucarelli), “City”. The charges are devastation and pillage, violence, assault and assault against police officers, with aggravating circumstances.

At the time, Alfredo was on hunger strike, as were other inmates, against the prison and the 41-bis torture regime to which the anarchist prisoner is still subjected today, in Sassari prison, along with 740 other inmates whom the state wants to annihilate.
This operation follows on from all the others which, in recent months, have hit hard at dozens of compas who have committed themselves to an international solidarity movement and to a mobilization which has intensified since 2022.

On April 24, at the Court of Cassation in Rome, what should be the final stage of the Scripta Manent trial will take place, one of the consequences of which is Alfredo’s confinement in the 41-bis regime. […]

Attaque Note: a radio interview with one of Rome’s comrades goes into more detail on this repressive operation, on the charge of devastation and pillage (which can lead to extremely heavy sentences), in addition to those of resistance, violence and threats against a person holding public authority, also in competition, and those of subversive propaganda and apology for a crime or misdemeanor. The investigators paid particular attention to the organization of the event and the way it was run, with damage estimated at around 630,000 euros.
This is the second time that the Turin Public Prosecutor’s Office has targeted the compas who took part in the mobilization in solidarity with Alfredo, following the proceedings in July 2023.
Solidarity with Guido, Lello and Daniele and all the others!

Cardiff, UK: Demo at Probation Office For Toby Shone

Posted on 2024/03/21 by darknights

DEMO AT CARDIFF PROBATION OFFICE FOR TOBY SHONE

On March 6th 2024, anarchists demonstrated outside Cardiff Probation Office to show their solidarity with Toby Shone as his parole pre-hearing meeting approaches. For the last 3 and a half years, probation officers including Lewis Thomas, Ashley Fussell, Gillian O’Brien, and Paul Smith amongst others at Cardiff probation office have collaborated with police such as Philip Gay at the National Security Division (NSD) and SouthWest Counter Terror Police (SWCTP) to target Toby for his anarchist beliefs and his alternative lifestyle. The UK police state is trying to criminalise such beliefs.

Toby was initially arrested on terrorism charges related to the 325.nostate.net website. This case fell apart the day before the trial in 2021. The Crown Prosecution Service had no evidence to offer the court. He was instead sentenced to three years and nine months in prison for a minor drugs charge. Released on licence in December 2022, Toby was recalled to prison on 19th September 2023 after attending a prisoner letter-writing night and dinner at the anarchist social centre BASE in Bristol. This meeting was being watched by two Counter Terror Officers. Toby’s licence conditions prevented him from contributing to or organising events at places like BASE. They also included a gagging order to prevent him speaking out about his case and his licence conditions. His attendance at this event was not a breach of his conditions but was used by his probation team, the National Security Division (NSD) and Southwest Counter Terror Police (SWCTP) to justify his renewed incarceration in a long-term high security prison 170 miles away from his home. Isolating him from his community and loved ones by sending him out of his area and by censoring his mail is a stated aim in police and probation paperwork and Toby’s treatment is apparently being signed off personally by the Secretary of State for Justice Alex Chalk.

Red and black smokies were set off, flyers were distributed inside the probation offices and to people in the street and comrades spoke in support of Toby and demanded his freedom from this revenge recall and from the whole rotten prison industrial complex including the probation service.

Soldarity with Toby

Solidarity with all imprisoned comrades

(EN) End of trial and final declarations of Francisco Solar and Mónica Caballero (Santiago, Chile, 6-7 November 2023)

The final hearings of the first instance trial against anarchist comrades Mónica Caballero and Francisco Solar, arrested on July 24th 2020 and accused (only Francisco) of sending parcel-bombs to the 54th police station and to Rodrigo Hinzpeter, ex minister of the interior and national defence as well as a director of the Quiñenco (25th July 2019), and both of the double explosive attack in the real estate building Tánica (27th February 2020), in the bourgeois district of  Vitacura (in the metropolitan area of Santiago) which took place in the context of the generalised revolt that broke out in Chile in October 2019. The actions against the 54th police station and Hinzpeter were claimed by Cómplices Sediciosos – Fracción por la Venganza, while that of the Tánica by the Afinidades Armadas en Revuelta.

In December 2021 Francisco claimed responsibility for both of the actions, giving the reasons, choice of objectives and revolutionary significance.

On 10th August 2022, after a series of extensions to the investigation period, the preliminary hearings have been concluded and requests for conviction been announced: 30 years’ prison for Mónica and 129 years for Francisco (according to the current judicial system in the Chilean State the public prosecutor’s office makes the requests before the start of the actual trial phase, the juicio oral). On 18th July of this year, after a postponement the trial finally began, which the comrades only attended in person during the first procedure of according to the current judicial system and the last hearing, attending the rest by video-conference.  During the July 18th hearing, the prosecutor, reformulating the initial requests, stated that the prosecutor’s office intends to inflict a sentence of 20 to 25 years on Mónica and one of over 150 on Francisco. During the hearing of 19th July Francisco reaffirmed assumption of responsibility for all the actions.
