The battle of Prosfygika: Striking images of squatters’ resistance during a massive police operation

Posted on 2022/11/26 by darknights

It all started in the early hours of Tuesday 22 November 2022 in Athens, Greece. In a massive operation, police special forces and squads of riot policemen invade one of the buildings of the Community of Squatted Prosfygika, break down the door of a flat and snatch two people. One of them is being accused of attacks against capitalist targets.* The operation ends and the police withdraws from the building.

Ten hours later, at about 17:00, and for no apparent reason, a massive police attack is being unleashed against two of the buildings where many people have gathered in solidarity to the community of Squatted Prosfygika, an array of 8 buildings built in the 1930s to house refugees following the “Asia Minor Disaster”.

Following the battle that ensued, scores of cops invaded the community and arrested 79 residents and people in solidarity, despite the fact that they initiated an attack with no other purpose than the attack itself, charging the arrestees with all sorts of misdemeanours for resisting their unprovoked attack. Amongst those arrested, there were even minors, a mother with her child, a pregnant woman, an accredited photo journalist and a lawyer. Many of the arrestees were badly beaten during the police invasion.  Continue reading “The battle of Prosfygika: Striking images of squatters’ resistance during a massive police operation” →

Italy: Sibilla investigation and 41 bis to anarchist Alfredo Cospito – stance taken by some suspects

Posted on 2022/11/25 by darknights

The motivations of the Supreme Court inherent in the pre-trial detention of the Sibilla operation came out in these days. We briefly recall the facts. In September 2021, following years of investigations conducted by the commands of the Special Operational Grouping of the Carabinieri in Milan and Perugia, the arrest of seven comrades and a companion was requested by the Perugia prosecutor’s office. This order was partly rejected and downgraded by the judge for preliminary investigations. Thus, on Nov. 11, dozens of searches were carried out by the ROS of the Carabinieri, the Sibilla investigation concerning some 15 anarchists and anarchists was notified, and six precautionary measures were imposed in connection with the charge of incitement to commit a crime with the aggravating factor of the purpose of terrorism: a warrant of arrest in prison for Alfredo Cospito (at the time already imprisoned in the Terni jail); house arrest with all restrictions for an anarchist from Spoleto; finally, the obligation to stay in the municipality of residence jointly with the obligation to sign three days a week for four comrades. On the same day of the operation two websites, roundrobin.info and malacoda.noblogs.org, were also blacked out. During the search, all found copies of the anarchist newspaper “Vetriolo” and the books What International? and My Dear Master Tomorrow I’ll Shoot You published by Monte Bove Editions were seized.

Only five weeks later, the Perugia review court revoked the arrest order, essentially trashing the investigation. Against this ruling prosecutor Manuela Comodi appealed in Cassation, obtaining, against the same opinion of the Attorney General’s Office, the reinstatement of the investigation. With some delay, the reasons for this decision were received. Unfortunately, the dabbling in technicalities is this time necessary for the understanding of the acrobatic leaps with which the Italian judiciary is trying to hold up Operation Sibilla and with it probably the infamous decision to lock up our comrade Alfredo Cospito in 41bis. In fact, the Supreme Court found that there was a passage in the sentence of the Perugia freedom court in which the prosecution’s position was not sufficiently argued. This passage coincidentally concerns precisely an article by Alfredo in “Vetriolo,” later taken up in What International? Therefore, the judgment by which we were exonerated is annulled and a new review is ordered to more fully address the point at issue. This is therefore an open ruling that does not rule out a new “acquittal,” but merely calls for aspects that it deems controversial to be more clearly delineated.

We are taking the floor because we want to expose the political logic behind this matter. This investigation plays its part in the 41bis order against our comrade. By claiming that Alfredo “instigated” from prison to commit revolutionary actions, it constitutes a good reason to argue the need to prevent him from any communication with the outside world. We take it upon ourselves to firmly denounce what we believe happened. It is clear that the Supreme Court received appropriate solicitations that Operation Sibilla be kept alive, albeit in intensive care. A decision made over and above the Attorney General’s own requests, the delay in the motivations, the captiousness of them, all of this speaks to us of the need to keep standing, while grasping at straws, a specific charge of incitement against Alfredo.

On December 1, a hearing will be held to confirm or not confirm the application of 41bis against our comrade for the next four years. On that day, the state executioners will be able to appear in court waving this charge as well. Let it be clear, publicly, how shaky it actually is (postponement for lack of motivation of the annulment ruling on a single specific article published in an anarchist newspaper), but that it can become, along with others, one more reason to keep Alfredo in the regime of annihilation and thus to sentence him to death.

Alfredo, in fact, has waged a very tough struggle that leaves no room for judicial acrobatics. Faced with the prospect of spending a lifetime in 41bis, he preferred, with his usual consistency and determination, to put his life on the line in an all-out hunger strike. On the one hand, your byzantinisms with which you arrange investigations and jail, on the other, the proud and unequivocal linearity of anarchism. Just as the comrades and comrade who joined the hunger strike are demonstrating the deepest sense of the word solidarity. In our own small way, we too put our faces to it and promise that we will not leave in silence what you are doing.

Russia: Radical Resistance 15 – 22.11.22

Vladivostok

On November 16, a colonel, Vadim Boiko, who worked with the mobilized, was found shot dead in his own office.

Eyewitnesses heard five shots. The first one to run into the office was the duty officer, who saw the body of the colonel with gunshot wounds to the chest. Forensics found five casings and four Makarov pistols. No suicide note was found.

Colonel Vadim Boyko was deputy head of the Pacific Higher Naval School, head of the technical support department.

Rostov-on-Don

November 17. During one night, an unknown guerrilla attacker damaged eight police cars in the Zheleznozhozhny district. All cars had their windows broken.

Novosibirsk

On 18 November in Novosibirsk anarchists destroyed an outdoor surveillance camera.

Moscow

On November 21 a warehouse of Ministry of Internal Affairs burst into flames at Moscow-Leningradskaya station. The warehouse was 10 meters away from the building of MIA. When the fire began to spread, the employees themselves fled, but there was enormous material damage: dozens of printers and scanners, 50 chairs, 20 armchairs, 10 tables and two air conditioners (and also a whole sports simulator and a bunch of gloves with masks) were burned. A criminal case has been opened.

Grozny

On November 21 a daredevil attacked a police inspector with a knife while he was performing prayers. The partisan attacked him from behind while the servant of the regime was ablution and stabbed him to Allah.

The assailant thus seized the policeman’s service weapon, but was unable to use it because he was shot dead by the killer’s colleagues. The murder of the assailant was reported by Ramzan Kadyrov himself. It is reported that the identity of the assailant has not been established, and that he most probably acted alone.

This is not the first attack on police officers in Grozny. Specifically, on December 28, 2020, two policemen were attacked by indviduals in the center of the city, armed with knives and tried to seize their weapons. As a result of the attack, one policeman died and another was wounded and hospitalized. Both attackers were killed.

On December 17, 2020. The Investigative Committee opened another criminal case over an attack on police officers in the Kurchaloysky district of Chechnya. According to preliminary data of the investigation, the attack happened around 1 a.m. on December 17 after two men in a VAZ-2114 car refused to stop on demand of policemen. During the pursuit the intruders opened fire at the policemen with an assault rifle, they were killed in return fire. Continue reading “Russia: Radical Resistance 15 – 22.11.22” →

Italy: Same story, same place, same shack. Discovery of bug in a Rome apartment

Posted on 2022/11/19 by darknights

Probably in the days leading up to the November 12 demonstration in Rome in solidarity with Alfredo and the other comrades imprisoned on hunger strike, someone snuck into the house where we live to plant a bug. Perhaps with a sense of irony, or perhaps with investigative “acumen,” that in the continuing misinterpretation of the “solidarity and complicity” that develops among anarchists will have caused them to anticipate a collective hunger strike, the intruders thought that the most suitable place to house their bug was the back of the kitchen oven. Powered by the cord of the same appliance, it was also equipped with a battery. The incident is aggravated by recurrence, as another bug had already been found in the same place, powered by the same power cord, several months ago. Time passes but control remains.

We will not be intimidated by the attention paid to us by some among those responsible for the detention of revolutionary prisoners.
Our thoughts are fixed on the comrades who even from inside a jail are continuing the struggle.
To them all the esteem, anger and love they deserve.

Italy: Against 41 bis, from Alessandria prison: communiqué of Nicola De Maria in solidarity with Alfredo Cospito, Nadia Lioce, Marco Mezzasalma and Roberto Morandi

Posted on 2022/11/16 - 2022/11/16 by darknights

We publish the following communiqué by Nicola De Maria, militant of Brigate Rosse – Colonna Walter Alasia (‘Red Brigades – Walter Alasia Column’) imprisoned since February 1982, currently in the High Security section of the Alessandria prison, on the initiative – extension of the time outside the cell, against the strict provisions of prison regulations – undertaken by him on November 9 in solidarity with Alfredo Cospito, anarchist comrade on hunger strike to the bitter end since October 20 against 41 bis prison regime to which he was transferred in May this year, and with Nadia Lioce, Marco Mezzasalma and Roberto Morandi, militants of Brigate Rosse per la costruzione del Partito Comunista Combattente (‘Red Brigades for the construction of the Combatant Communist Party’) imprisoned in 41 bis for 17 years.

‘Crisis, war, repression against workers, unemployed, students’

In this context, the 41 bis prison regime for revolutionary prisoners has recently been extended; a regime that aims at the annihilation of their identity and psycho-physical integrity.

On November 9, 2022, I extended the time outside the cell in:

– solidarity with Alfredo Cospito, anarchist prisoner on hunger strike to the bitter end in the Bancali-Sassari prison against 41 bis;

– solidarity with the Brigate Rosse–PCC prisoners, Nadia Lioce, Marco Mezzasalma, Roberto Morandi, who have been resisting the 41 bis regime for more than 17 years.

Spain: Update on our comrade Gabriel Pombo Da Silva (October 2022)

Posted on 2022/11/15 by darknights

In concrete terms, the situation of our comrade has not changed much. Here is a summary of the few new developments since the last communiqué appeared on the Internet last April. Up to now we have always said that legally one of the problems to be solved has to do with a deliberate confusion in the application of a specific Penal Code. That of 1973 (which corresponds to a sentence of 30 years with the application of the different redenominations accumulated in these decades), in force at the time of the conviction for the events of 1990. Or the 1995 code (which corresponds to a sentence of 20 years without the application of the aforementioned remissions), obviously more favorable in terms of calculation.

We recall that, theoretically, they should always apply the most favorable Penal Code, but we know that the “always” varies according to who you are… Gabriel is still who he is and his determination, constancy and clarity certainly do not play in his favor in relation to time. In any case, Penal Code of 1973 or 1995, he should have been released because he has been detained for many years too long.

With a slowness of biblical times, on July 5 came the good news: his sentence can be recalculated to 20 years (he should be given back many years of life). As always, things are not easy, the times of state justice are physiologically long and we must add the times of political revenge. Said, done: this good news actually corresponds to the pronouncement of the Prosecutor but the last word belongs to the judge who only has to confirm what his colleague said and then submit the new calculation to the other competent courts. It is not difficult to imagine how this judge is taking all the time he can (he has no formal deadline) and that he has not communicated anything so far. No wonder: if they had wanted to apply their own law Gabriel would already be free! Continue reading “Spain: Update on our comrade Gabriel Pombo Da Silva (October 2022)” →

Chile: Communiqué of the “Anti-prison Solidarity Network with Juan and Marcelo” 15 years after the so-called Security Case

Posted on 2022/11/15 by darknights

15 YEARS AFTER THE SO-CALLED SECURITY CASE: MARCELO VILLARROEL AND JUAN ALISTE WITH THEIR FISTS RAISED IN DIGNIFIED RESISTANCE TO IMPRISONMENT AS STATE REVENGE.

On October 18, 2007, a group of people carried out a robbery at a branch of the Banco Security located in the center of Santiago in Chile. In the retreat, two police motorists who were alerted and went to the vicinity tried to stop part of the assailants and clashed with them shooting one policeman dead and the other wounded, thus the expropriators escaped from the police encirclement.

After the events and the death of the policeman, the state operations would be unleashed in a matter of weeks against a universe of subversive autonomous comrades who would be exposed in all the mass media of power: Freddy Fuentevilla (in the street), Carlos Gutiérrez (in the street), Juan Aliste and Marcelo Villarroel (still imprisoned) were immediately condemned by the media, the fabricated public opinion and the rulers in power, while the carabineros began the hunt against them, who were already in hiding, raiding the homes of relatives in Santiago, Valparaíso, Iquique and carrying out multiple operations in Mapuche territory.

Months later (2008) they would be arrested in Argentinean territory (Freddy and Marcelo), convicted (for carrying a weapon of war), spending 22 months in prison and then expelled to Chile. Then Juan would also be detained in Argentina (year 2010) and immediately expelled to Chile. In this way, already in this territory, the comrades would have to face a political trial that would finally condemn Marcelo to 14 years in September 2014 for 2 bank robberies and Juan to 42 years for the death of the policeman, the attempted death of the other policeman and 2 bank robberies. So clear are the figures and reasons why our comrades today are still kidnapped by the state in the prisons of their democracy. Italy: An important update regarding anarchist Alfredo Cospito: the re-examination hearing for the 41 bis measure will be held on December 1

Posted on 2022/11/13 - 2022/12/02 by darknights

Update on the situation of Alfredo Cospito, who has been on hunger strike since October 20 against the 41 bis and life sentence without possibility of parole.

Alfredo has lost 16 kilos to date and is in good health overall. He is not yet taking any food supplements. We also inform that the re-examination of the 41 bis measure against him has been set for December 1st. The hearing is very important as it will have to rule on the legitimacy of the decision of the previous minister of justice Marta Cartabia to apply the 41 bis prison regime against our comrade.

Note of “La Nemesi”: The hearing will almost certainly be held at the surveillance court in Rome, which has sole jurisdiction over the decision to ratify or terminate detention under the 41 bis regime.

Italy: Declaration of start of hunger strike by anarchist Anna Beniamino in solidarity with Alfredo Cospito, alongside Juan Sorroche and Ivan Alocco, against 41 bis

Posted on 2022/11/13 by darknights

Declaration of start of hunger strike by anarchist Anna Beniamino in solidarity with Alfredo Cospito, alongside Juan Sorroche and Ivan Alocco, against 41 bis (Italy, November 7, 2022)

Here the translation of the declaration about the beginning of the hunger strike by anarchist Anna Beniamino, imprisoned in Rebibbia women’s prison in Rome, in solidarity with anarchist Alfredo Cospito, who went on hunger strike, indefinitely undertaken since October 20th, against the 41 bis prison regime to which he was transferred on May 5th and against life imprisonment without possibility of parole. The comrade started her hunger strike on November 7th. We recall that comrades Juan Sorroche (in Terni prison, since October 25th) and Ivan Alocco (in the French prison of Villepinte, since October 27th) also went on hunger strike for the same reasons. Revolutionary solidarity with Alfredo Cospito, Juan Sorroche, Ivan Alocco, Anna Beniamino and all imprisoned anarchists and revolutionaries.

On October 20th, in the prison of Bancali (Sassari, in Sardinia), Alfredo Cospito began an all-out hunger strike against the 41 bis regime and life sentence without parole.
The regime 41 bis was assigned to him from May this year, being accused of maintaining relations through correspondence and editorial activity with the anarchist movement through public writings and interventions from the Maximum Security section where he had been locked up for years.

Life imprisonment without parole is likely to be the outcome of the appeal – made by the cassation ruling of July 2022 of the Scripta Manent trial – for the recalculation of the sentence passed as 285 of the penal code, “political massacre”, for a double attack on the carabinieri school of Fossano, signed by FAI-RAT [Federazione Anarchica Informale – Rivolta Anonima e Tremenda, ‘Informal Anarchist Federation – Anonymous and Tremendous Revolt’].
The sentence for 285 c. p. constitutes the keystone of an accusatory architecture which established the existence of a “subversive association with terrorist aims” (made up of only three promoters and with a sporadic existence, to overcome contradictions due to the outcomes of previous trials) and the activity of “instigating” through anarchist blogs and newspapers published over the past 20 years by those convicted.
In short, a monstrous sentence where one is head/factotum of an “association” with uncertain contours, as well as instigators and perpetrators of a “massacre” that never happened and above all never defended as such. That is, as has been repeatedly stated in times past, revolutionary violence is defended by anarchists, and by me among them; massacre is not.
What the court papers and the directives of the secret services and prevention apparatuses variously call internal subversion or terrorism and comes to be enclosed in a series of offences (subversive association, massacre, devastation and looting…) taken verbatim from the Rocco Code still in force, are actually pieces of the revolutionary tension and the quest for freedom and social justice. That the latter and the justice administered by the courts are antithetical worlds is no news to anyone with a minimum of knowledge of the historical and political history of movements, ideas and practices that are refractory to the status quo: the bigger and more complex the accusation, the more difficult it is to bring events back to reality. Along these lines, one finds oneself a defendant in trials with farcical “truths”, where it is the political identity, not the facts, that constructs the crime that buries you alive. UK: Imprisoned Anarchist Toby Shone Fights New Battle Against Fascist UK State

Posted on 2022/10/28 - 2022/10/28 by darknights

Imprisoned anarchist Toby Shone is fighting a new battle as he counts down the weeks to his halfway release on December 28th 2022.

As the UK collapses into something resembling a tin-pot dictatorship and a Victorian poorhouse, Toby continues to be targeted by the Probation Service and their colleagues in the Counter-Terror National Security Division and MAPPA (Multi-Agency Public Protection Arrangements) for his ‘thought crimes ‘, ‘anarchism’ and ‘alternative lifestyle’.

In September, Toby was informed that Cardiff-based probation officer Paul Smith had booked a series of interviews for him (without communicating these to his lawyers as instructed) with forensic psychologist Dr Harriet Chapman from the Centre for Forensic and Criminological Psychology, University of Birmingham. Dr Chapman’s intention was to interrogate Toby under the Extremism Risk Guidelines formulation tool, ERG22+. This assessment which is “intended for use with people who have been convicted of any extremist or extremist-related offence” (which he hasn’t been) considers at least 22 factors by which an individual can be regarded as an extremist and thus be subject to de-radicalisation measures. We could find no public paper detailing these 22 factors or the format of the interview.

These largely experimental and deeply authoritarian de-radicalisation measures, which appear to be rolled out on a one-to-one basis, include the Healthy Identity Intervention, Desist and Disengagement Programme, Motivational and Engagement Intervention and Developing Dialogues. All of these are highly invasive, intensive programmes designed to investigate and dismantle a targeted individual’s personal narrative, childhood and influences, to attempt to undermine their critique of the existent, to isolate them from their relationships and affinities and to re-mould them into the perfect citizen under conditions of duress. Think re-education camps and political indoctrination. In effect they are seeking to “pathologise” the holding of anarchist beliefs: anarchism as a psychological illness. This tactic of “punitive psychiatry” has been used by other authoritarian states, most notably Soviet Russia, China and the USA.
