Argentina: A wave of looting across the country

Posted on 2023/09/01 - 2023/09/01 by darknights

Plagued by inflation, Argentina is facing a wave of looting

In Argentina, a wave of looting of supermarkets and shops over the past four days has put the country on alert, reviving traumatic memories of the “Gran Crisis” of 2001 [See here the brochure Recueil de textes argentins (2001-2003), ed. Mutines Seditions, 2003], against the backdrop of presidential elections scheduled for October. Although the government denies any causal link, the wave comes at a time when the Argentine peso has just been devalued by around 20% in mid-August. Latin America’s third-largest economy is grappling with endemic inflation, which has been in double digits for over twelve years, and is now running at 115% year-on-year. JPMorgan even expects inflation to reach 190% by the end of the year. Inflation is so high that in May, the government launched a 2,000 peso banknote, the largest ever in circulation.

The looting, which has occurred in the southern Patagonian city of Bariloche, around the capital Buenos Aires and in the Mendoza wine-growing region, is the work of small groups who break into shops to steal food and other goods. Gangs of 20, 40 or more people descend on a supermarket or other business in “piranha attack” mode, or smaller groups, driven by last-minute appeals via social networks, sometimes force their way into closed stores. The assailants grab food, but also whatever they can find: alcohol, cigarettes, various and sundry objects, as evidenced by the full supermarket carts abandoned when the police arrived. Sometimes, as in Moreno on Tuesday, the store is set on fire.

In all, almost 200 people – many of them minors, sometimes aged 12 or 14 – have been arrested in four days, following looting or attempted looting, often halted by the police, in the provinces of Cordoba (central), Mendoza (west) and Neuquen (south), and more than a hundred since Monday in the “Conurbano”, the huge suburbs of Buenos Aires. On Wednesday August 23, the Buenos Aires government reported that in the capital, there had been more than 150 looting attempts at the same time, with 94 people arrested.

Today, August 24, the Argentine press announced that the national government has formalized the creation of unified commands to prevent looting. These Unified Commands of the Federal Police and Security Forces will be made up of the National Intelligence Directorate and the Secretariat of Security and Criminal Policy, the Argentine Federal Police, the National Gendarmerie, the Naval Prefecture and the Airport Security Police, as well as representatives of the police forces of the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires and the provinces.

Operation ”Scripta Scelera” against the fortnightly “Bezmotivny”: first initiatives in solidarity, a brief update, some observations

In the early morning of Tuesday, August 8th, a repressive operation – ridiculously named Scripta Scelera (these fine people always come up with some “ambitious” or suggestive name for their operations) [Latin: “written crimes”] – was unleashed by the State’s repressive apparatus in various cities. It was aimed at shutting down the anarchist internationalist fortnightly magazine “Bezmotivny”, thereby striking the action of publication of analysis and reflection as well as, and in particular, texts claiming actions, sabotage and initiatives of attack undertaken by anarchists and revolutionaries throughout the world against the State and capital.

Let’s take a brief look at the facts. Mainly involving anarchist comrades in Carrara and the “Gogliardo Fiaschi” Anarchist Cultural Circle, the operation consisted of notification of an investigation against 10 comrades, all of whom were subjected to house searches (as well as that against the above-mentioned anarchist circle), and significant seizures of newspapers and various publications. Concerning the 10 under investigation (for whom Genovese public prosecutor Manotti twice requested their arrest in prison), the judge for the preliminary investigations ordered house arrest with all restrictions (including electronic ankle bracelets, which were not applied due to lack of the necessary equipment) for four of the comrades, a night curfew from 19.00 to 7am for another five, while one comrade has no restrictions (at the police station they notified him of a two years’ compulsory expulsion order from the province of La Spezia). One of the comrades under house arrest was initially taken to prison on order of the same prosecutor, due to the fact that he did not have a certificate of residence. In the context of the operation, a printing press in Avenza, where the paper had recently been printed, was also shut down (and later re-opened).

Chile: Case of compañero Zukato

Posted on 2023/08/07 by darknights

On Saturday, July 22, comrade Zukato suffered burns to his body when he handled some accelerant in the midst of the occupation of the Liceo de Aplicación, an educational establishment of which he is a member. Due to the seriousness of what happened, he was taken urgently to the Posta Central where he was hospitalized and underwent surgery.

Amidst the expectation and manipulative practices of the hegemonic press, Zukato’s family informs that around 8:30 in the morning of Wednesday, July 26th, the comrade entered the Emergency Ward for the second time. These interventions, by the way quite long, were accompanied from the street by students from Liceo Tajamar, L1, Liceo de Aplicación and individuals who held vigils in different parts of Santiago.

On Wednesday evening, Zukato’s mother was intimidated inside the former central hospital. She, having authorization to move freely around the hospital, not only because her 16 year old son is in serious condition but also because of the Mila Law (law of dignified accompaniment), was prevented by security guards who obstructed her steps to prevent her from seeing Zukato, who entered the ward. In resistance, she refused, advancing through the corridors until about 10 guards arrived and pushed her out and, at the same time, called the carabineros, who arrived quickly, handcuffing her and transferring her to the first police station. After a few hours, she was released without first being threatened by the Carabineros.

These scenarios of permanent harassment against those who fight, occurs in all possible scenarios, in all generations, whether they are children, mothers, grandparents. In spite of this, solidarity did not cease, with a massive march along Alameda, where pamphlets and banners were displayed, in addition to the communication of words of his comrades outside the National Library, while Zukato remains hospitalized, breathing on his own and trying to return little by little to his stability, passing from the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) to the Intensive Trauma Unit (ITU).

On August 1, he went into surgery at 8:30 a.m., this time for specialized and deep procedures. Continue reading “Chile: Case of compañero Zukato” →

Chile: Mother’s words for comrade Zukato

Posted on 2023/08/07 by darknights

Dear Compañerxs:

To tell you that physically Zukato is stable, out of risk and advancing every day in his recovery. We are grateful for every show of solidarity during these days; from long accompaniments outside the hospital, the propaganda in the streets, in the territories and also in other brother towns. These actions and gestures undoubtedly transform rage and pain into hope.

The secondary struggle of our young people has been going on for decades, demanding dignified conditions to study where the repressive apparatus of the state has only criminalized them, instead of providing a solution and establishing minimum conditions. They have delivered letters, they have had meetings with the local power and nothing has been achieved, the small advances have been taken out in marches, hunger strikes and takeovers.

The costs have been extremely high for many of them. Today again they are calling to “resolve the petitions” because we all dream of a decent education, where high schools should be a protective factor and not a risk factor. They have also positioned themselves in a place against the system of misery and exploitation that we are inheriting from them, they have positioned themselves against repression, abuses, child abuse in sename centers, against prison and in favor of freedom.

They have much to teach us. While we, the working class, seem to put up with poor conditions willingly, the rich have never had to worry about their children not receiving a quality education, rather they are being trained to run the world they are left.

Sadly in this struggle today was my son Zukato. His speedy recovery, is impregnated with all the good vibes, prayers or thoughts that each of you sent him. We are not alone.

So let’s keep thinking, supporting his recovery from wherever and however we can.

Hold on Class solidarity!
Muchas gracias.

Chile: Words of solidarity for Zukato from comrade Koda from Santiago 1

Posted on 2023/08/07 by darknights

I want to send a fraternal embrace, love and all the strength for the family and comrade injured in the high school during a occupation, and that as a result of this the damn bourgeois press uses his image to make a moral feast against the social struggle against this repressive system and precarious, believing with all the right to spread an accident of an active and like-minded comrade.

Little brother Zukato I send you my maximum support, love and strength for this adversity, we know that this road will be full of adversities and that in spite of this we continue with our heads held high, that you are not alone comrade, here we are attentive to you and letting the morbid bourgeois and bastards know that you are not alone and that we will never leave any brother or sister alone.

Much strength brother!
Complicet and insurrectionary solidarity with our brother!

No one is alone. And knowing that our path leads us to an abyss, we continue to stand with our heads held high and always supporting each other.
Let’s not let go of the streets
Speedy recovery zukato!

Call for International Week of Solidarity with Anarchist Prisoners 2023 // 23 – 30 August

Posted on 2023/08/05 by darknights

The world is on fire. The climate crisis is getting worse and worse. Instead of masks against Covid-19, people now have to wear masks against smoke from forest fires. At the same time huge areas getting flooded due to heavy rain caused by the ongoing pollution of the environment. Nothing of that is caused by individual decisions of the people. It is not cause by buying the wrong product in the supermarket. It is caused by the systematic exploitation of nature and humanity. Governments and big corporations are the ones steering us into a climate catastrophe that, at this point, seems to be unstoppable.
Governments and big corporations that created a world where wealthy people are more important than others. This was especially visible while the global media had nothing better to do than talking for 5 days about a missing submarine filled with 5 rich people, while hundreds of others are dying in the mediterranean sea during their try to get chances for a better life.

Extreme right, conservative and authoritarian politics are increasing all around the world. Some use it to start Wars and kill thousands of people, some build fences and guard what they think is their property and others use it to arm up in the digital world. Surveillance is increased and the states are leaping more and more into our private spaces, analyzing our private conversations and collecting data about us with a depth of detail we could never have imagined. The tools of the states to crush resistance, crush even the idea of fighting the system, are sharpened with every minute. Many anarchists, anti-authoritarians, environmental activists, and antifascist around the world face repression because acting anonymous in a digitalized world is as difficult as never before.

With all the obstacles put into our way during the struggle for a better world, anarchist ideas and values remain important. In times of crisis methods of collective organizing, mutual aid and the principle of solidarity start to shine. The system will fall apart and we should get ready to take back a world that was stolen by companies, yacht owners and the war industry. A world that was meant for everyone. And while our friends are put behind bars and states try to hide them in the darkest corners of their prisons, we will not hold still but fight till they are free again.

Let’s break out together!

That is why we are calling again for International Week of Solidarity with Anarchist Prisoners. Do some action of solidarity! Write letters, organize speeches or film screenings, make our comrades visible on the streets with a banner drop or a graffiti and let them show that they are in our hearts and that we are fighting together.

Let’s remember those who fought against this injustice and payed with their lives.

No one is free, till all are free!

Germany: Code Name Jenny / Deckname Jenny

Posted on 2023/08/04 - 2023/08/04 by darknights

“Code Name Jenny” is a highly topical political feature film. We are putting the film on the net for free. It is a gift for all people who like political films. And for all people who fight for a better society.
“Code Name Jenny” was made by independent filmmakers at the self-governing Berlin film school “filmarche”. The film music was made by the wonderful band: “Guts Pie Earshot” and “Nomi & Aino”.

A film that was not interfered with by any production. It was made by critical filmmakers and activists, without money. Filmed at resistant locations in the city of Berlin, where no other camera can get to.
Spread the link to the film. Do screenings. Don’t pay money for screenings or only a contribution to political projects. Discuss the film. Invite us if you want political discussions or want to know how such a film can be made as a no budget film. If you have money and want to support another film, please contact us (there is a good idea!).

A shift to the right in Europe. Drowned people in the Mediterranean. Fortress Europe is growing against refugees. The climate is breaking down. And the wars are getting closer.
Jenny’s gang is no longer watching. And acts. But when Jenny’s father finds out about their militant ambitions, he has to face his own past as a member of a German urban guerrilla group. And now things get tight for all involved…

A story between love and betrayal, hope and resignation, resistance and friendship.
Shot from an anarchist, feminist and queer angle, subversive and self-deprecating, but always lovingly partisan… and intergenerational. That’s it.

Those July days still linger in the wind EN/IT

Those July days still linger in the wind

Many of us did not experience that July 2001 firsthand, others did, and those of us who were there do not forget the beatings, the charges and the murder of Carlo, but today as at the time neither do we wonder.

Similarly, even those who did not live through those years grew up with contempt for both the police and the foam-clad rabble in the middle of July who mimicked police riot gear and, with ridiculous “declarations of war” to the powerful, led an entire generation astray.

In the years that followed until today we continue to experience the product of those days in Genoa. The same dynamics recur today: on the one hand there are echoes, albeit different, of words that are bursting but lacking in concreteness; on the other hand, as opposed to these new “declarations of war,” there is the continuous concerted effort with the enemy to grab a few crumbs, a few accreditations that increasingly pave the way for that “beggar’s mutualism”-which is nothing but the privatization of the beggars.

Once again we ask ourselves “other possible worlds” or anti-capitalism?

From all those who choose other possible worlds divides us a gulf, sharp and deep between opportunism and combat, between mediation and social revolution.

“We do not forget the murder of Comrade Carlo Giuliani, just as we do not forget those who forgot, exploited or sold out on the altar of political and electoral interests. We do not forget the concerted protests, the attempts to divide the “movement” before the Genovese revolt, the delusions afterwards.

Let us not forget those who enriched themselves between Europarliamentary seats and institutional positions.

Let us not forget those who first used, then divided and exploited, and finally sold out the 2001 Genoa revolt.”

Carlo lives in the struggles of those who, like us, daily put up battles that have anti-capitalism as a fundamental point without expiring in the search for the phantom “new possible worlds” nor in the annual ritual commemorations: each of us must give something, so that some of us do not have to give everything.

“A dance with time. Greetings, year seven”

Posted on 2023/07/20 by darknights

Greetings from nowhere.

“Freedom is secured not by the fulfillment of one’s desires, but by the removal of desire.”

– Epictetus

My journey into clandestinity began 7 years ago today. It was July 10, 2016, the sun was heating up the city and for most of the people I met that day it was just another Sunday. For me, that day was both an end and a beginning. Giving up my old and beloved reality of life, replaced by the great unknown variable. Leaving the old behind me, welcoming the new. A painful and overwhelming start of the journey… From then on I was confronted with the unknown every day, resembling a person who has lost their sight from one day to the next and now has to focus on their other senses. I wandered around, looking for anchor points, and after long months, with patience and persistence, finally regained my bearings. My life was back on track, or so I thought… What had to come was coming. The next big shock hit me and once again life held its instruction manual in front of my nose; leave the old behind, welcome the new. Clandestinity is a rigorous study full of hardships, but the fruits of it will be a lifetime harvest for me.

A year ago, I stood again in this clearing to call out to you. To let you know that I am well. To let you know that I sincerely love you and carry you in my heart day after day. Today, one year later and 7 years after the beginning of the journey, I am somewhere else, as I will be tomorrow. But the bond between us remains. I had to leave you behind physically. But spiritually and emotionally you have been my silent companionship for 7 years. Thanks to you I always find the strength and courage to welcome new things into my life. To then, when the time comes, leave it behind me again.

Still on the run, mentally ready for the task of securing freedom –

With love and in solidarity

Your friend and comrade from nowhere

At Daggers Drawn… – announcing new publications at rupture distro

Posted on 2023/07/13 - 2023/07/13 by darknights

This text, since it publication, has inspired many anarchists in their projects, proposals and practice, but it is with no sense of nostalgia that we have reprinted this booklet, rather because we realize that its central questions and critiques are more relevant than ever: how to identify the enemies of freedom, those in the ivory towers, those on the streets, those within our struggles?

“Published in May 1998 by NN editions, a publisher started only seven months earlier by some anarchists who had participated in the weekly newspaper Canenero, this booklet, has been translated into Spanish, Portuguese, English, French, Dutch, German. Since then, it has nourished reflections, offered suggestions, strengthened tensions, raised doubts, as well as provoking much irritation (the concept of ‘the existent’ in particular, in its bursting totality, has proven rather indigestible for those who aspire to administer the State in any way). In its small way, At Daggers Drawn has contributed to the spread of an autonomous, insurrectional anarchist perspective. A perspective that is inherently irreducible to “small reformist steps” and not seduced by “a revolt for a few intimates to the sound of pyrotechnics and poorly crafted slogans”. Forged in the rejection of the false choice between citizenist reformism and vanguardist armed struggle, these pages assert the immediate necessity and possibility of an insurrectional poetry carried out by all. This should not be confused with pathetic political propaganda, nor with boastful and self-referential communiqués.

[…]

It is well known who the authour of this text is: no one. Born from long and continuous discussions, writing, re-writing, additions, changes, suggestions and corrections, At Daggers Drawn should belong to anyone who recognises themselves in it, just as it always should be. Like everything that is the work of no single individual, it belongs to everyone in general.”

– From the introduction of Ai ferri corti, ed. L’oro del tempo, 2015

At daggers drawn: an expression that can be traced back to a variety of historical anecdotes, commonly defining a very specific moment of a violent conflict – the crudest, in the greatest physical proximity and the closest to its end. For those choosing to not look away, nor accept, nor reproduce the miserable and tragic existent that authority imposes, conflict seems inevitable.

As power, its promises, its progress, its blackmails, keep scaring and seducing even those who speak of freedom from authority, we are still faced with the same frustration. We find, over and over, and closer and closer, anarchists making choices based on logics of convenience, efficiency, political strategy and the spotlights of the spectacle, rather than defending, no matter what, anti-authoritarian ethics. So yes, conflict also against the false critics, those who talk about freedom, but when “necessary” throw away our ideas and practices for the sake of favourable alliances, popular acceptance and a chance at a by-all-means-necessary “victory”.

So what these pages declare is permanent conflict: anti-authoritarian ethics are under permanent attack, from all sides, and if those who carry them in their hearts do not defend them, even when it’s exhausting, uncomfortable and inconvenient, their existence in space and time and memory will be relinquished to where authority wants them…

It is with the same passion and urgency that shook us the first time we read these pages that we announce a new print run, in English and German.
