Minera Aclara: Rare Earths, Geopolitics and Extraction in Abya Yala (Chile, Brazil)

Minera Aclara is a project promoted by the company REE Uno SpA, now known as Aclara Resources, which aims to extract rare earths from two sites, one in the hills of Penco, territory occupied by the Chilean state, and the other in Goiás, Brazilian territory. Rare earths are a set of 17 minerals mainly used for weapons and the technology industry (batteries, luxury electric cars, wind turbines, etc.), everything that is sold today as green technologies. These technologies, which are not for mass use but rather for industry and the military and economic elites, are sustained by the extraction of raw materials from Abya Yala region and other territories that have historically faced colonization by world powers. Currently, Penco and Goiás are territories that are in the global spotlight of extractivism, representing a strategic point in the war for control of the production of these substances.

The project to be installed in Penco consists of three rare earth extraction zones, consisting of open-pit mines with a diameter of approximately 45 hectares, equivalent to 45 soccer fields, and a depth of between 40 and 60 meters, which is where the concentrations of these minerals are found. On the other hand, the module that they intend to install in Goiás comprises an expandable area of 1,500 hectares.

What do we know about rare earth mining?

For years, China has controlled rare earth mining, generating more than 95% of the world’s production of this mineral alloy. A terrible example of the consequences of this industry was what happened in Baotou, the world’s largest supplier of rare earths, where a former pasture was turned into a toxic lake of waste from the extraction process, “composed of a cocktail of acids, heavy metals, carcinogens, and radioactive material used to process the 17 most sought-after minerals in the world.”[1]

But this monopoly is being threatened by other capitalist powers: the US and Canada, which intend to compete with China for control of rare earth extraction. This is where the territories of Abya Yala, from the colonialist perspective of these two countries, appear as key suppliers for carrying out this plan, just as Boutu was for China. Currently, the company Minera Aclara presents itself to the outside world as a “sustainable” alternative to the Chinese extractive market and aims to compete against Chinese control through the extraction of rare earths in Goiás, Brazil, and Penco, Chile. Smash COP30: Last week, representatives of UN member states flew into Belém, Brazil, with their insanely large entourage of journalists, security forces, and scientists to ponder their inaction, take group photos, and announce statements they will not keep. All this while we are governed by people who care more about supplying German industry with enough critical raw materials and positioning themselves for careers after their term in office than trying to prevent the complete destruction of the Earth.

Belém has been upgraded for tourists, the rich, and politicians because of the COP summit. While tourists stroll along the shiny new harbor dock, houses have been cleared and the exploited and poor pushed to the margins of the city. Neighborhoods have been buried under concrete. It is the same dynamic of gentrification and repression that we know from other meetings of the world’s powerful.

The tradition of colonization manifests itself through the exploitation of the rainforest, industrial agriculture, mining, and oil production, which destroy indigenous territories. We think this is a good moment to point out that we should not believe their lies for a moment longer. The displacement in cities, the destruction of the earth, the colonization of territories—all these struggles are interconnected.

That is why we set fire to four Tesla charging stations and two adjacent switch cabinets with gasoline. Let’s sabotage this deadly regime! Let’s sabotage their (green) capitalism!

Musk stands for exactly this logic and is not without reason the richest person on this planet. We want to see his empire in flames!

Few people in the world, nowadays, embody absolute Evil like the infamous entrepreneur and billionaire technocrat Elon Musk. It would be reductive, however, to consider him a classic cartoon “villain”, a character that would fit him like a glove, without realizing that this despicable individual is only the product of an economic and social system that marches towards its own self-destruction and that his expansionist aims symbolically summarize those of the system itself.

Officially entering the field of politics, all this is exemplified in his servility towards Trump, who has placed him in the front row of the reactionary, imperialist, sexist and supremacist offensive underway in the United States. Specifically, as a reward for his billionaire support for the electoral campaign, the newly elected president has awarded his favorite Dark Maga the leadership of DOGE, an ad hoc body that has quickly busied itself on cuts and reforms aimed at directly or indirectly affecting that slice of the population that is recognized by the new elite as “surplus”.

Neuralink is a startup that aims to create a system of neural interfaces that connect the human brain with artificial intelligence; he claims to have implanted his first brain chip, called Telepathy, in January 2024. After abandoning its leadership due to a potential conflict of interest with its role in the development of AI for self-driving Teslas in 2023, he founded a rival startup, xAI, which has the stated purpose of training a generative artificial intelligence chatbot (Grok) that automatically learns to respond racistly, against the woke culture of which ChatGPT would be an expression.
In turn, through xAI Musk has recently purchased the X platform himself, the former instant messaging service called Twitter, well exemplifying the use of social media as a tool for algorithmic manipulation of public opinion for the most vulgar political purposes, as well as revealing in a now indisputable way the use of social media as an inexhaustible source of data for the use and consumption of AI BigTechs. The 3rd issue of the anarcho-nihilist/insurrectionary newspaper “Blessed Is The Flame” has been published. Its pages contain reports of direct actions, claims of responsibility, texts, poems, and news from anarchist prisoners and trials that were published in November and December 2024 in ten different languages across various parts of the world, or were sent to us via email and are being published for the first time. (Some of the texts published for the first time will also be uploaded as standalone posts on our blog, blessed-is-the-flame.espivblogs.net.)

Our goal is not only to break down the linguistic barriers that hinder information, solidarity, and the dissemination of propaganda by the deed on an international level but also to give counter-information a printed form. We believe it is crucial for counter-information to transcend the limits of the digital realm.

In an era of rapid developments, we unfortunately published the 3rd issue a bit later than we had planned, as this is the first time the newspaper is officially published in seven different languages: Greek, English, Spanish, Indonesian, French, Italian, and German. A new post will include links to all these translations, once they are published on the respective counter-information platforms.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to all comrades—both within Greece and abroad—who contribute by translating, offering financial support, and enabling the circulation of this newspaper in different parts of the world. Leipzig, Germany: Incendiary attack on a Tesla dealership

[On the night of May 12/13 in Leipzig, several Tesla cars were set on fire in the Schomburgkstrasse parking lot of a Tesla dealership. Two Tesla cars were completely destroyed, and two others heavily damaged, with damage amounting to 120,000 euros. The Saxony Regional Criminal Police’s Center for Defense against Terrorism and Extremism (PTAZ) was in charge of the investigation. The day before the attack in Leipzig, 2,500 demonstrators marched in Berlin from the forest towards the Tesla factory in Grünheide, with clashes with the police. When the dust had slowly settled in Grünheide and the cops left, we set out on the night of May 12-13 to use incendiary devices to take several Teslas from a car dealership in the west of Leipzig out of circulation.

Unfortunately, apparently technical errors meant that only a few vehicles were hit and the damage was therefore limited.

We see this action as an opportunity to take action against green capitalism. The different means we choose should complement each other and not compete with each other.
Whether in Grünheide, Leipzig or in the countries where raw materials for electric cars or other smart bullshit are mined, we oppose both the “old” fossil and the “new” green world!

Berlin, Germany: Fire for Tesla

Two Teslas were set on fire in Rummelsburg on February 7 and two Tesla charging stations on Vulkanstraße on February 8.

We think that Tesla is an ideal target for our attacks.

Because:

> Several armies use Tesla’s Starlink satellite system in their wars. Including Israel in Gaza. Also Ukraine. Tesla’s Starlink infrastructure is an important military player and attacks on Tesla can be a sign everywhere: against every war!

> Tesla is a symbol of “green capitalism”. But it is anything but green: the lithium batteries come from toxic mines in Chile and devour other rare metals, which means misery and destruction for the mining areas. “Green capitalism” stands for colonialism and land theft!

> Tesla wants to further expand its Gigafactory in Grünheide near Berlin. We want to defend ourselves against this! We don’t want any more Teslas on the roads! The Gigafactory became known for its extreme exploitation conditions. In addition, the factory contaminates the groundwater and consumes huge amounts of this already scarce resource for its products.

> Tesla is militarizing our roads. Their cars are equipped with high-resolution cameras. In “guard mode”, they film everything and everyone. Make sure to make yourself unrecognizable during actions.

> Elon Musk is an arsehole!

Therefore:

Let the air out of the tyres of expensive cars? great.

About the Switch Off! attack campaign

A year ago in Europe a campaign of attack against companies and infrastructures that feed the ecological catastrophe around the world, entitled Switch Off! was launched. Large and small actions have positioned themselves in offensive from the concern and need to confront an evident eco-systemic collapse provoked by the global capitalist machinery that destroys everything in its path.

The intention of the campaign is to “attack the system in a sustainable way”, placing direct action in a common context through anonymous communication with each other, inviting to arm themselves with their own means and go on the offensive against the productive infrastructure and with it the property, without falling into false discursive, institutional and/or technological illusions, “making it clear that there can be no green capitalist alternative, nor peace with the existing conditions”.

In a first statement of presentation we can see more precisely what is the background and objective of why to invite the use of the slogan “Switch Off!”:

Switch off – a call to revolt

The certainty that the current system will lead to the collapse of the massively damaged ecosystem has already moved countless people and driven them into resistance. Tens of thousands are taking to the streets against the capitalist machinery’s “business as usual”, people are resisting the destructive large-scale projects en masse, the system’s infrastructure is being blocked and courageous fighters are setting fire to the machines that are robbing them of their livelihoods.

What we need in the struggle against the destruction of nature and the resulting social misery is the common striving for the real revolutionary break and the freedom of all. For an initiative that rejects all compromises and cosmetic corrections of the state and brings about a transformation of our social relations.

Because the destruction of the planet by the neoliberal economic system is inextricably linked to patriarchal thought patterns, racism and colonialism. The initiative for this must necessarily come from below. From the struggles of the marginalized. From the struggles of those who oppose the state’s promise of salvation with a self-organized, solidary coexistence. From the struggles of those who see that there can be no compromise in the fight against the systemic destruction of the biosphere.

We should also be aware that we cannot completely prevent the gradual collapse of a massively damaged ecosystem. Not the loss of biodiversity. Not the depletion of resources. We will not be able to prevent the climate catastrophe, as we are already in the midst of it. Admitting this – without any doomsday pathos – does not paralyze us. On the contrary: it should open up the question for us and our contexts of what our lives and our revolutionary struggles could look like in the future.

We can hardly block and sabotage as radically and uncompromisingly as the climate change caused by capitalism requires. But we should not be discouraged by this. Let us question, sabotage and sustainably attack the infrastructure of capitalism in the fight against exploitation. So that another world becomes possible! Let us cooperate with each other in solidarity so that we can live a dignified life. Let us realize our ideas in the here and now and already within our struggles and actions. We will not be lulled into complacency by the attempts at appeasement by those in power.

Against their technological solutions

The solutions offered by those in power for the now noticeable effects of the ecological crisis are primarily technological. This is obviously also driven by lobbying, but above all it is a strategy to legitimize themselves. The development, control and application of the “technologies of the future”, which are supposed to make growth capitalism “sustainable”, are in the hands of the state, industry and science and are inextricably linked to them. If we are being sold the illusion that climate change can be stopped technologically, then this is based on the belief that those in power only need to take the right steps, the right measures, to save this world.  For one thing, they have absolutely no interest in ending the expansionist capitalism that secures their position of power. And for another, technological reform, with the new dependencies it produces, is also doomed to failure. Examples of this could be e-mobility or technologies for the production of so-called renewable energies. The required raw materials are often procured in the course of neo-colonial environmental exploitation. The transportation of these raw materials and components is in turn highly dependent on fossil fuels. On the night of November 2, we placed and set fire to tires blocking both directions of traffic in front of the Terna spa headquarters on Via Egidio Galbani and threw stones to break its glass.

Terna is the main company in Italy for the construction and maintenance of electricity infrastructure, but it also operates abroad in countries such as Chile. Terna is not only responsible for the environmental devastation and pollution that follows the building of power lines and related transformer stations, as a leading actor in the process of electrifying the world as a consequence of the unhealthy idea of progress that this deadly system propagates, but it is also a promoter of the “green revolution” caused by the recent need to restructure capitalism that will only bring further exploitation of ecosystems and people. Unveiling its responsibilities is one of the goals of our action.

This action is to be seen as part of the international campaign to free Marcelo Villarroel. Marcelo is an anarchist prisoner in Chile’s state prisons who was imprisoned after a period of absconding in 2007 for a series of bank expropriations. He was sentenced to more than 40 years in prison without access to prison benefits because he was held responsible for certain actions that took place during the years of the military dictatorship in Chile and therefore condemned by military laws. Despite the rhetoric, Chilean democracy shows perfect continuity with the dictatorial regime when it comes to striking those who act without mediation for the end of all oppression and exploitation caused by the State and Capital. That is why we join the chorus of actions and initiatives for its immediate liberation.

Frankfurt, Germany: Switch Off – the system of destruction! Teslas torched

Last week, the International Motor Show (IAA) took place in Munich. Once again, all kinds of corporations were able to show off their great, shiny cars at this summertime trade show and congratulate each other on their economic successes in their air-conditioned conference rooms, limousines and exhibition halls.

At the same time, there’s a fire again this summer in Rhodes. In Portugal. On Maui.

At the same time, the homes of many are being flooded. In Slovenia or in Austria.

The livelihoods of many are destroyed. These deadly disasters have many causes. The IAA is one of them. We say switch off the system of destruction!

Therefore we torched some new Teslas in Frankfurt tonight. As a salute to the protests in Munich. As one attack among many on the destructive auto industry.

Tesla is one of our most prominent enemies. The company represents like no other the ideology of green capitalism and the ongoing global and colonial destruction. Electric motors are constantly presented as the clean alternative. This is a cynical lie. Like other corporations, Tesla exploits resources worldwide. The raw materials needed for the batteries of electric cars, such as lithium and cobalt, are mined in Latin America or Africa under lousy conditions. For transport and production, fossil fuels are needed despite the great green coating.
All this always happens in connection with the oppression of indigenous communities, whose resistance must be a signal for us to act.

Tesla accepts all this to produce cars that can creep around here in the inner cities. That show every day: There is prosperity. But just not for everyone. In the corporate logic, only a few are entitled to own such cars. It is a class issue who drives or is allowed to drive these cars.
