I will only say a few lines. Before disappearing into the oblivion of the 41 bis regime for good let me say a few things and then I’ll keep quiet forever. The judiciary of the Italian republic decided that I, too subversive, should no longer have the chance to see the stars, freedom. Buried for good with life imprisonment without appeal, which I have no doubt you will give me on the absurd charge of having committed a “political massacre” for two demonstrative attacks in the middle of the night, in deserted places, that were not intended to and could not have injured or killed anyone and in fact did not injure or kill anyone.
Not satisfied, as well as a life sentence without appeal, given that I continued writing and collaborating with the anarchist press from the prison, it was decided to clamp my mouth for ever with the medieval gag 41 bis, condemning me to an endless limbo awaiting death. I will not stand for it and I will not surrender, and will continue my hunger strike for the abolition of 41 bis and life sentence without appeal until my last breath to let the world know about these two repressive abominations in this country.
There are 750 of us in this regime and I am also fighting for that. By my side my anarchist and revolutionary brothers and sisters. I am accustomed to the censorship and smoke screens of the media, whose sole aim is to monstrify any radical and revolutionary opponent.

A few days ago, I received the news that the indomitable Alfredo Cospito started a hunger strike to stop the application of the 41 bis legal torture regime.

For those who do not know Alfredo Cospito, he is an anarchist comrade kidnapped by the Italian state, since 2012, for the attack against one of those responsible for the nuclear disaster in Fukushima. This action was attributed by the Olga FAI-IRF cell and assumed by Alfredo.

After this condemnation of the comrade, he has been prosecuted for several repressive operations, such as Scripta Manet, Sibilla, which have managed to get convictions and have added more years to the already long sentence of the comrade.

The 41 bis is basically a regime of total isolation, in which the prisoner is restricted, limited and censored in all his communications. Censorship is one of the main motivations that the Italian state has had to apply the 41 bis to Alfredo, the comrade has always had the opportunity to spread informal anarchist ideas that urge action, as in the same way, he has also been concerned to be part of the debates that various groups and individuals promote in different territories.

In this way Alfredo, despite all the difficulties, continues to be an active and very valuable comrade in the construction of destructive ideas. The powerful know that Alfredo’s pen is dangerous, that is why it is better to leave him in the cage, as small as possible and with as many eyes as possible that can control his every move. Since 20 October, the anarchist Alfredo Cospito has been on hunger strike against his detention in total isolation and torture and against imprisonment without parole. Other detained comrades (Anna Beniamino, Ivan Alocco, Juan Sorrocho and Toby Shone) as a sign of solidarity and to give strength to Alfredo’s struggle, have also started a hunger strike.
Alfredo has been in prison uninterruptedly for ten years, spent in High Security sections until his transfer to 41 bis. The 41 bis is a prison regime of annihilation, as it is designed to cause physical and mental damage through the technique of sensory deprivation; it is a political and social death sentence, aimed at cutting off all contact with the outside world.
Our comrade was transferred to these torture chambers because, despite his imprisonment, he never stopped contributing to the international anarchist debate with articles, editorial projects and proposals.
The re-examination of the 41 bis measure against Alfredo is set for 1 December. This hearing will be very important because it will have to pronounce on the legitimacy of the previous Justice Minister Marta Cartabia’s decision to apply the 41 bis prison regime against our comrade.
Alfredo was convicted, along with Anna Beniamino and other anarchists, in the mega trial Scripta Manent, a trial aimed at criminalising anarchist ideas and hostile practices against all forms of authority and domination. Specifically, Alfredo and Anna were accused of being responsible for the double explosive attack against the Scuola Allievi Carabinieri in Fossano, on 2 June 2006, claimed by Rivolta Anonima and Tremenda / Federazione Anarchica Informale. For this attack, on 6 July, the Court of Cassation reformulated the sentence to ‚political massacre‘. Life imprisonment is the only penalty the Italian penal code provides for political massacre. After reclassifying the crime, the Cassation sent the case back to the Court of Appeal to redetermine the convictions. The hearing that will decide the extent of these sentences is set for 5 December in Turin.
The Italian state, which has always protected the fascist strategy of mass murder, now wants to convict two anarchists of massacre for an explosive attack that caused neither victims nor injuries.
This affair breaks into the increasingly dark repressive climate with which we all have to deal: that is why the struggle of Alfredo, Juan, Ivan, Anna and Toby is close to the heart of those who do not want to resign themselves to a world that is more and more an open-air jail.

We call for 30 November (the day before the re-examination of the 41 bis measure against Alfredo), a day of action in solidarity with Alfredo and the other comrades on hunger strike.
Let us make them feel our solidarity that breaks the isolation beyond all borders and all cages. Let us break the deafening silence in which they want to bury our comrade alive. Let us give voice to our comrades‘ struggle with our actions.
Let us make the symbols of oppression and exploitation the targets of our actions. Targets are everywhere. Every action is necessary: whether it is spreading the ideas of anarchist hunger strikes or sabotaging and disrupting the normal functioning of the state and capital. Target the Italian, German or any other state and the symbols of domination to abolish the prison system!
Let us show that solidarity is a dangerous weapon…

The Scripta Manent trial has reached its final stages. Last July 6, the Supreme Court requalified as a so-called political massacre one of the crimes (inherent in the double explosive attack against the Fossano Carabinieri Cadet School on June 2, 2006, claimed by Rivolta Anonima and Tremenda / Federazione Anarchica Informale) for which anarchists Anna Beniamino and Alfredo Cospito were convicted in the Scripta Manent trial. Life imprisonment is the basic penalty under the penal code for political massacre. After requalifying the crime, the Supreme Court sent the case back to the Court of Appeals to redetermine the sentences. The hearing that will decide the extent of those sentences is set for Dec. 5 in Turin. We publish below the manifesto for the solidarity presence with the imprisoned comrades.

Since last October 20, the anarchist Alfredo Cospito has been on hunger strike to the bitter end against the 41 bis prison regime to which he is subjected and against the hostile life sentence.

That is why an international mobilization of solidarity is underway for him and for the other imprisoned anarchists who have decided to accompany him on strike: Juan Sorroche in Terni prison, Ivan Alocco in a French prison, and Anna Beniamino in Rome’s Rebibbia prison.

Alfredo has been in prison continuously for ten years, spent in High Security sections until his transfer to 41 bis. The 41 bis is a prison regime of annihilation, in that it is designed to cause physical and mental damage through the technique of sensory deprivation; it is a political and social death sentence designed to sever all forms of contact with the outside world.

Alfredo was convicted, along with Anna Beniamino and other anarchists, in a trial aimed at criminalizing ideas and practices hostile to authoritarian oppression, and now the sentence for Alfredo and Anna has been recast as “political massacre,” the only punishment for which is life imprisonment. The recalculation of the sentence will take place at the Turin Court of Appeals on December 5.

The Italian state, which has always protected fascist mass murderers, now wants to convict two anarchists for massacre for an explosive attack that caused neither casualties nor injuries.

This affair breaks into the increasingly grim repressive climate with which we all find ourselves dealing: that is why the struggle of Alfredo, Juan, Ivan and Anna is close to the heart of those who do not want to resign themselves to a world that is increasingly an open-air jail.

Spain: Update on our comrade Gabriel Pombo Da Silva (October 2022)

In concrete terms, the situation of our comrade has not changed much. Here is a summary of the few new developments since the last communiqué appeared on the Internet last April. Up to now we have always said that legally one of the problems to be solved has to do with a deliberate confusion in the application of a specific Penal Code. That of 1973 (which corresponds to a sentence of 30 years with the application of the different redenominations accumulated in these decades), in force at the time of the conviction for the events of 1990. Or the 1995 code (which corresponds to a sentence of 20 years without the application of the aforementioned remissions), obviously more favorable in terms of calculation.

We recall that, theoretically, they should always apply the most favorable Penal Code, but we know that the “always” varies according to who you are… Gabriel is still who he is and his determination, constancy and clarity certainly do not play in his favor in relation to time. In any case, Penal Code of 1973 or 1995, he should have been released because he has been detained for many years too long.

With a slowness of biblical times, on July 5 came the good news: his sentence can be recalculated to 20 years (he should be given back many years of life). As always, things are not easy, the times of state justice are physiologically long and we must add the times of political revenge. Said, done: this good news actually corresponds to the pronouncement of the Prosecutor but the last word belongs to the judge who only has to confirm what his colleague said and then submit the new calculation to the other competent courts. It is not difficult to imagine how this judge is taking all the time he can (he has no formal deadline) and that he has not communicated anything so far. Here the translation of the declaration about the beginning of the hunger strike by anarchist Anna Beniamino, imprisoned in Rebibbia women’s prison in Rome, in solidarity with anarchist Alfredo Cospito, who went on hunger strike, indefinitely undertaken since October 20th, against the 41 bis prison regime to which he was transferred on May 5th and against life imprisonment without possibility of parole. The comrade started her hunger strike on November 7th. We recall that comrades Juan Sorroche (in Terni prison, since October 25th) and Ivan Alocco (in the French prison of Villepinte, since October 27th) also went on hunger strike for the same reasons. Revolutionary solidarity with Alfredo Cospito, Juan Sorroche, Ivan Alocco, Anna Beniamino and all imprisoned anarchists and revolutionaries.

On October 20th, in the prison of Bancali (Sassari, in Sardinia), Alfredo Cospito began an all-out hunger strike against the 41 bis regime and life sentence without parole.
The regime 41 bis was assigned to him from May this year, being accused of maintaining relations through correspondence and editorial activity with the anarchist movement through public writings and interventions from the Maximum Security section where he had been locked up for years.

Life imprisonment without parole is likely to be the outcome of the appeal – made by the cassation ruling of July 2022 of the Scripta Manent trial – for the recalculation of the sentence passed as 285 of the penal code, “political massacre”, for a double attack on the carabinieri school of Fossano, signed by FAI-RAT [Federazione Anarchica Informale – Rivolta Anonima e Tremenda, ‘Informal Anarchist Federation – Anonymous and Tremendous Revolt’].
The sentence for 285 c. p. constitutes the keystone of an accusatory architecture which established the existence of a “subversive association with terrorist aims” (made up of only three promoters and with a sporadic existence, to overcome contradictions due to the outcomes of previous trials) and the activity of “instigating” through anarchist blogs and newspapers published over the past 20 years by those convicted.
In short, a monstrous sentence where one is head/factotum of an “association” with uncertain contours, as well as instigators and perpetrators of a “massacre” that never happened and above all never defended as such. That is, as has been repeatedly stated in times past, revolutionary violence is defended by anarchists, and by me among them; massacre is not.
What the court papers and the directives of the secret services and prevention apparatuses variously call internal subversion or terrorism and comes to be enclosed in a series of offences (subversive association, massacre, devastation and looting…) taken verbatim from the Rocco Code still in force, are actually pieces of the revolutionary tension and the quest for freedom and social justice. That the latter and the justice administered by the courts are antithetical worlds is no news to anyone with a minimum of knowledge of the historical and political history of movements, ideas and practices that are refractory to the status quo: the bigger and more complex the accusation, the more difficult it is to bring events back to reality. Along these lines, one finds oneself a defendant in trials with farcical “truths”, where it is the political identity, not the facts, that constructs the crime that buries you alive. Since Oct. 20, fellow anarchist Alfredo Cospito has been on hunger strike in Sassari prison against the 41 bis regime in which he was placed last May after ten years of detention in High Security. The unprecedented decision to lock up an anarchist in 41 bis is just the tip of the iceberg of the authoritarian turn underway in Italy, a turn that was inaugurated with the March 2020 prison massacre, continued with the investigations against union struggles, with logistics workers accused of “extortion” against the boss because they demanded wage increases, in a particularly fierce preventive counterrevolution against the anarchist movement as indicated by the seizures of books and newspapers, the endless special surveillance, the sentencing of Juan Sorroche to 28 years in prison, and the Cassation of the Scripta Manent trial.

On October 20th, anarchist Alfredo Cospito, during a trial at the Sassari surveillance court, made an attempt to read an articulate statement in which he was about to announce that he is starting a hunger strike against the 41 bis prison regime to which he is subjected and against life imprisonment without possibility of parole. A battle that Alfredo does not intend to stop, until his own death. The comrade, who has been in 41 bis since last May 5th, under a decree signed by then Minister of Justice Marta Cartabia, is now being detained in the Bancali prison in Sardinia.

Alfredo Cospito is an anarchist who has always been at the front line of struggles, never willing to compromise or give up. He is a comrade who has been fighting since the late 1980s, a period in which he was imprisoned as a total objector (for refusing to serve in the obligatory military service) and who, after his arrest in 2012, during the trial that followed, claimed the responsibility for the shooting of Ansaldo Nucleare executive Roberto Adinolfi, an act that was carried out by Nucleo Olga / Federazione Anarchica Informale – Fronte Rivoluzionario Internazionale, FAI-FRI (“Olga Nucleus” / Informal Anarchist Federation – International Revolutionary Front), and occurred on May 7th of the same year in Genoa.

Alfredo has been always active in the defense of comrades affected by repression, in every corner of the world. His struggle objectively concerns all detainees, among whom we particularly remember the three militants of Brigate Rosse per la costruzione del Partito Comunista Combattente (Red Brigades for the construction of the Combatant Communist Party) locked up for more than 17 years in 41 bis (Nadia Lioce, Roberto Morandi, Marco Mezzasalma). In 2009, comrade Diana Blefari, from the same organization, committed suicide after her living in this harsh prison regime.

Alfredo has been uninterruptedly in prison for 10 years, which he spent in High Security sections until his transfer to 41 bis. In 2016 he was involved in repressive operation “Scripta Manent”, accused of subversive association with the purpose of terrorism and multiple explosive attacks. Following a Supreme Court verdict in July this year, the sentence for Alfredo and Anna Beniamino was reformulated to “political massacre,” the only punishment which means prison for life.
