First of all, a greeting to all the comrades who were present in this initiative, a greeting and a special thanks to the comrades who promoted it. To this day, the weaving of international relations, exchanges and comparisons continues, as in the past, to be an essential element and always a living part of revolutionary anarchism, in order to strengthen our intentions.

Scripta Manent:
A political trial against 20 years of the history of revolutionary anarchism

The events:

At dawn on 6 September 2016, 32 comrades throughout the Italian State were awakened by the civil police (DIGOS). The result of the first part of the police operation called “Scripta Manent”, ordered by the Turin Public Prosecutor’s Office through its investigator Roberto Maria Sparagna, is 15 suspects and 7 arrests. On the other hand, an eighth anarchist, in charge of the Anarchist Black Cross publishing project (now closed), is arrested after a house search against him in which batteries and an electrician’s manual were found. In addition to comrades Alfredo Cospito and Nicola Gai, already in prison since 2012 having been tried and convicted for the injury of Roberto Adinolfi, (CEO of Ansaldo Nucleare) action taken by “Nucleo Olga of FAI/FRI”, comrades Alessandro, Marco, Danilo, Valentina and Anna are arrested. For the comrades, articles 270 bis (on association with terrorist purposes), 280 bis (on terrorist acts with lethal or explosive devices) and 285 (on massacre) are triggered for various reasons, which are in question starting from as far back as 2003 and all relating to a series of attacks specifically signed by the “Informal Anarchist Federation” through the cells FAI/Narodnaya Volya (FAI/ People’s Will), “Cooperativa Artigiana Fuoco e Affini FAI/Collaboration of Fire and Artifacts (Occasionally Spectacular))”, “FAI/RAT ((Rivolta Anonima e Tremenda/Federazione Anarchica Informale – Anonymous and Tremendous Revolt/Informal Anarchist Federation)” and “Nucleo Olga FAI/FRI” (FAI/IRF Cell Olga).

Thus, there is the umpteenth investigation of the Informal Anarchist Federation, another attempt to fish in the darkness just to secure a salary, which between the period of investigation and trial, makes as many servants of the State as possible fatten their pockets. During the first months of this operation, the arrested comrades have been subjected to bans on meeting each other, censorship of correspondence, complete isolation and several transfers. In April 2017, the announcement of the closure of the investigation – for those arrested and under investigation in September 2016 – added, in addition to the crimes previously contested, to 12 of the 17 original accused to Article 414 of the Criminal Code (on incitement to commit a criminal act with terrorist purposes) as authors and/or distributors of the work of the Anarchist Black Cross, the newspaper and the blog, making explicit reference to certain opinion articles and other articles from No. 0 to No. 3. With regard to the offence of incitement to crime, the aggravating circumstance of “committing the act by means of computer and telematic tools” is also mentioned. Greece: Critical health condition of political prisoner Thanos Chatziangelou

Political prisoner and member of the Anarchist Action Organization Thanos Chatziangelou is currently on his 15th day of hunger and thirst strike. The comrade is currently having difficulty getting out of bed, he is in pain all over his body, his limbs are swollen, he has developed symptoms of angina pectoris, indicating a serious heart problem with the possibility of sudden cardiac arrest and there may be permanent damage to his kidneys. Also since yesterday he has begun to lose track of time and is showing signs of hallucinations. Combined with Thanos’ latest tests, which were done on the evening of December 30, the following conclusion is drawn. The state, the government and in particular the Ministry of Citizen Protection are murdering the anarchist political prisoner Thanos Chatziangelou.

On the other hand, the dignity and intransigence shown by Thanos in this hard struggle is and will forever be a beacon for all those who are fighting. For all free people.

Solidarity to comrade Thanos Chatziangelou, member of the Anarchist Action organization who is on hunger and thirst strike since 19/12/2022 and is in danger if he has not already suffered permanent damage to his health.

We are living in times of a general unbridling of state violence and repression in a general environment of social crisis, misery and impoverishment: Suppression of self-managed spaces of resistance, violent repression of demonstrations, state killings with the organs of the state going unpunished, continuous hardening of criminal and ”penitentiary” legislation with one of its main objectives being to deal with political opponents of the state.

The state’s increasingly intense attack on prisoner militants has reached the point where it does not even accept the demands made through hunger strikes, which are not even mentioned in the new Penitentiary Code, as they were in the old one, but involuntary hospitalisation and forced feeding, which constitutes torture, are now being rearranged.

Comrade Thanos’ request to return to Korydallos prison should be granted.

Solidarity with the anarchist prisoners L. Vougiouklaki, F. Daskala, G. Michailidis, K. Dimalexis and I. Rodopoulos, who are on hunger strike and accompanying Thanos Chatziangelou, who are also on hunger strike.

Italy: Update on anarchist comrade Alfredo Cospito on hunger strike to the bitter end

Alfredo is in fair condition, is very lucid, and was expecting a rejection by the surveillance court of Rome [the verdict of the December 1st hearing at the surveillance court was announced on the 19th]. He does not despair that he will still be successful in his battle. In any case, he lets it be known that he intends to go on until death. Since the prospect of life imprisonment has been avoided for now – at least postponed – with the decision of the Turin court of appeal on December 5th [also on December 19th was held in Turin an appeal hearing at which the judges drew up the documents to be sent to the constitutional court], Alfredo reiterates that he will end his hunger strike only if he will be declassified from 41 bis prison regime.

He is aware of the solidarity mobilisation through news reports, when actions and initiatives impose this level of coverage on the regime media. The newspapers, on the other hand, come to him with pages cut out, holes that have become increasingly frequent in recent weeks.

At the moment, a few letters, telegrams and postcards seem to get through, unlike the months before his struggle, when everything written to him ended up being confiscated. Particularly with regard to telegrams, which seem to be the communications that most frequently pass the censors’ meshes, it is important to remember that these must be individual and must contain the sender’s name and address at the bottom.

Italy: The surveillance court of Rome rejected the appeal against the 41 bis measure for anarchist Alfredo Cospito

December 19, 2022, 61 days after the start of the hunger strike to the bitter end against 41 bis prison regime and life imprisonment without possibility of parole by anarchist Alfredo Cospito.

The decision concerning the appeal against the 41 bis detention order for anarchist Alfredo Cospito has just been announced: the surveillance court of Rome rejected it. The comrade will remain in 41 bis. This is not the moment of despondency, it is the moment of anger. You will pay dearly for it. Today as yesterday: death to the State, to the capital, to all authority.

Italy: Anna Beniamino interrupts hunger strike

We learn by phone call that in the evening of today, Wednesday, December 14, Anna interrupts the hunger strike she started 38 days ago at the side of Alfredo, who is imprisoned in 41 bis prison regime.

At the end of the strike Anna has lost 13 kilos, with a blood pressure of 50 at the minimum, 80 at the maximum. Some values of her liver profile exceed the parameters considered acceptable from a health point of view. In the last period, she has been offered hospitalisation several times by the prison, which she has always refused.

The lives of our comrades in prison are at stake in this struggle. It is up to all of us anarchists and revolutionaries to ensure that it is safeguarded. This applies all the more to Alfredo, now on his 56th day of hunger strike and whose condition is becoming increasingly critical awaiting the decision of the Surveillance Court of Rome [on December 1st, a hearing was held at the Rome Surveillance Court on the appeal against Alfredo Cospito’s 41 bis detention measure, the outcome of which has not yet been announced by the court].

Call for an action day for Alfredo Cospito

On October 20, anarchist prisoner Alfredo Cospito began a hunger strike against the 41a prison regime, a struggle he intends to carry on until the end. Anarchist prisoners Ivan Alocco [the comrade ended the strike on Dec. 1, ed] and Anna Beniamino joined the strike, as did Juan Sorroche, who ended it after a month

The 41bis is the harshest prison regime in Europe. Created in principle to prevent members of the mafia from continuing their activities from prison, it was soon extended to revolutionary prisoners to prevent them from interacting with the outside world. Three prisoners of the Brigate Rosse-PCC, Nadia Lioce, Roberto Morandi and Marco Mezzasalma, have been subjected to this system for 17 years. The value of their resistance must be measured by the understanding that it would be enough for them to make an act of political surrender to get out of this regime.

Only by understanding these regimes of isolation as a means of pressure, as torture, to extort repentance, can we give its true meaning to the suicide of Brigate Rosse-PCC activist Diana Blefari in 2009, after four years in 41bis. Diana could no longer bear 41bis but refused to be betrayed. This choice was also a form of resistance, and it has a precedent, that of Luis Rodríguez Martínez, of the Anti-Fascist Resistance Groups of the First October (GRAPO), who committed suicide in 1983 after three years of total prison isolation. Komotini, Greece: Victory in the Struggle of Alfredo Cospito

On December 4 we held a rally with hundreds of leaflets, banners and slogans in the central points of Komotini and in the central square in solidarity with the Italian anarcho-nihilist Alfredo Cospito, who is on hunger strike since October 20, against the special regime of imprisonment 41bis in which he is being held in revenge by the Italian state because of his unrepentant attitude.

Update on the December 5 hearing on the recalculation of sentences against anarchists Alfredo Cospito and Anna Beniamino as part of the Scripta Manent trial

On December 5, the second appeal hearing of the Scripta Manent trial against comrades Alfredo Cospito and Anna Beniamino was held. The general prosecutor asked for 27 years and one month for Anna and life imprisonment without parole with 12 months of daytime solitary confinement for Alfredo, going even further than prosecutor Sparagna’s previous requests, which were 30 years for Alfredo.
The Turin appeals court failed to pronounce the sentence and turned to the Constitutional Court: the Turin judges are asking whether it is legitimate to be forced to disallow mitigating circumstances for Alfredo Cospito because of his previous penal background. Indeed, this would force them to sentence Alfredo to life in prison, although for an action that caused neither deaths nor injuries.
Next December 19 there will be a new hearing in Turin, a formal hearing aimed at working out the question to submit to the Constitutional Court.
Alfredo and Anna intervened with spontaneous statements. Alfredo reiterated that he will continue his hunger strike until his last breath against 41 bis and life imprisonment without possibility of parole, Anna remarked that anyone with a modicum of critical thinking will know how to identify the principals and perpetrators of his comrade’s annihilation. The people in solidarity in the courtroom greeted the accused comrades with slogans and applause.
Shortly afterwards, a demonstration set off through the streets of Turin that, despite the massive deployment of repressive forces, managed to approach the city center, passing through some of the city’s neighborhoods.

Get Alfredo out of 41 bis.
To end 41 bis and life imprisonment without possibility of parole.
Free them all!
