End of trial and final declarations of Francisco Solar and Mónica Caballero (Santiago, Chile, 6-7 November 2023)

The final hearings of the first instance trial against anarchist comrades Mónica Caballero and Francisco Solar, arrested on July 24th 2020 and accused (only Francisco) of sending parcel-bombs to the 54th police station and to Rodrigo Hinzpeter, ex minister of the interior and national defence as well as a director of the Quiñenco (25th July 2019), and both of the double explosive attack in the real estate building Tánica (27th February 2020), in the bourgeois district of Vitacura (in the metropolitan area of Santiago) which took place in the context of the generalised revolt that broke out in Chile in October 2019. The actions against the 54th police station and Hinzpeter were claimed by Cómplices Sediciosos – Fracción por la Venganza, while that of the Tánica by the Afinidades Armadas en Revuelta.

In December 2021 Francisco claimed responsibility for both of the actions, giving the reasons, choice of objectives and revolutionary significance.

On 10th August 2022, after a series of extensions to the investigation period, the preliminary hearings have been concluded and requests for conviction been announced: 30 years’ prison for Mónica and 129 years for Francisco (according to the current judicial system in the Chilean State the public prosecutor’s office makes the requests before the start of the actual trial phase, the juicio oral). On 18th July of this year, after a postponement the trial finally began, which the comrades only attended in person during the first procedure of according to the current judicial system and the last hearing, attending the rest by video-conference. During the July 18th hearing, the prosecutor, reformulating the initial requests, stated that the prosecutor’s office intends to inflict a sentence of 20 to 25 years on Mónica and one of over 150 on Francisco. During the hearing of 19th July Francisco reaffirmed assumption of responsibility for all the actions. Toby Shone, currently incarcerated in Category B prison HMP Garth, is receiving no mail – including his legal mail from his lawyers – and any money being sent into him to be added to his prison account is being restricted to only those persons on his approved contact list. If you are intending to send him a letter, it is suggested that you send you message via https://www.emailaprisoner.com/, which he is currently able to receive. If you want to send him money and are not on his approved contact list, Toby suggests you send it to his support group (bank account details below).

If you have sent him mail, books, etc. at HMP Garth and have not received a reply, Toby asks that you contact Brighton ABC [brightonabc@riseup.net] so that you can be added to the complaint that his lawyers are putting together to challenge the prison’s actions.

Athens, Greece: Direct Action Cells Claim Responsibility for Arson Attack Against the Home of Judge Elias Kanellopoulos

Overcoming these fears would make us more lucid. Many struggles are built on these fears, they are products of these fears. Fear poisons us; compromise is its toxic fruit. Then, with eloquent words, comfortable theories, convenient long-term strategies, they make sure to embellish the whole humiliation by recommending wisdom and drawing us into political realism. The Direct Action Cells claim full responsibility for the arson attack on the home of judge Elias Kanellopoulos in the Cholargos area (a suburb in Athens). Our attack is an action of solidarity with the mobilizations of the prisoners in the prisons of the territory. It is also a continuation of the strategy of the personal targeting of those involved in the constant tightening of criminal repression and the repressive management applied in the field of prisons. From the architect of the new penal code, Lambros Margaritis, to the head of the Inspection and Control Body of the Prisons, Spyridoula Presvia, and now to Ilias Kanellopoulos, an appellant seconded to the Ministry of Justice, who was one of the close associates of the former Minister of Justice, Kostas Tsiaras, during whose days the new penal and penitentiary code was created and passed.

Our message is clear. The Direct Action Cells do not forget the people behind bars, the families who are suffering and tormented by the methods of the judges, the police and those prison officers who have the impression that they are untouchable. We do not forget the political prisoners who are paying the price for their choice of joining the revolutionary struggle. The explosions outside the homes of those who, in one way or another, choose to make the lives of prisoners a nightmarish reality, brings home, even if only on a symbolic level, the combative reality of the permanent anarchist threat.

As we previously stated, following the attack on the home of Lambros Margaritis:

For us, any attack on the rights of prisoners that were won through painful struggles is taken very seriously, and in this regard we will try as hard as we can to keep it high on the priorities of the militant formations acting within the combative movement. UK: Anarchist comrade Toby Shone abducted by armed cops & sent back to prison!

Toby Shone is an anarchist who was imprisoned in Wandsworth, Bristol and G4S Prison Parc for nearly two years accused of being the administrator of counter-information project 325.nostate.net. After the political prosecution failed and the cops had to drop the case 5 days before trial in October 2021, Toby received a sentence of 3 years 9 months for possession of psychedelic medicines. He was released on 28 December 2022 under heavy restrictions (license conditions), oversight by a multi-agency team (MAPPA) including the National Security Division (counter-terror) and forced to live in a filthy bail hostel in Gloucester for 9 months. He had just moved back into a flat in the Forest of Dean in Gloucestershire 9 days ago.

On the morning of 19 September 2023, he was driving to an appointment with his probation officer when he was pulled over and arrested by an armed police unit in-between the Forest of Dean and Gloucester. He was taken to HMP Bristol. He is awaiting more detailed information, but his legal team say that the allegations are that he breached two of his license conditions: being in possession of an [unauthorised] phone and attending a meeting in Bristol in August.

Toby is in great spirits as ever and requests letters and books. ■

It is not the fruit of a profound analysis that by striking with forcefulness and frequency, it is possible to bend the hand of Power. This has been demonstrated in multiple experiences of struggle in different territories and at different times.

At this moment the situation of comrade Marcelo Villarroel requires, without a doubt, that decision and collective and individual will to make the Power and its legal apparatus bend. There are several documents, writings and communiqués that have been disseminated in recent times that expose Marcelo’s situation and the legal aberration that is being applied to him, where ultimately a clear reason of State is perceived to keep him locked up. Therefore, what remains is to act to get the comrade out on the streets and thus open unsuspected paths for the return to the streets of the anarchist and subversive prisoners.

For those of us who choose not to accept the discourse of the powerful, we know that the legal principles that underpin the legality of the State are not applied to everyone in the same way. Paper can hold a lot and can show us a vision far removed from reality.

The reality of power denies us that there are people punished for being openly hostile to its dominating forms, and that in pursuit of being the most implacable they violate their own laws. I do not pretend that the Powers That Be act correctly, but I will not lose the opportunity to evidence the use of their dirty tools against those who confront the oppressors.

As of today, Marcelo Villarroel is serving almost 29 years in prison in 3 periods and for years he has not been able to access prison benefits, all because of the sentences he has pending from the military prosecutor’s office. He still has 13 years to serve in prison before he can run for office.

The authorities deny the special treatment that Marcelo has, if he were treated as a common prisoner he would be on the street today.

On Friday, August 25, banners, pamphlets, barricades and confrontations with Molotov were deployed against the presence of Carabineros (COP), in solidarity with Monica Caballero and Francisco Solar who are being accused of the placement and detonation of explosive devices in 2019 and 2020 signed by the cells “Cómplices Sediciosos/Fracción por la Venganza” and “Afinidades Armadas en Revuelta” (Armed Affinities in Revolt).

On Thursday, August 24, leaflets were deployed, barricades and confrontations with Molotov were set up against the presence of Carabineros (COP), in solidarity with the comrades Mónica Caballero and Francisco Solar who are in the first month of the judicial process against them for various explosive attacks and in memory of Macarena Valdes who was an environmental activist fighting against the hydroelectric plant RpGlobal and who was murdered on August 22, 2016 by hitmen of the same. On a planet that increasingly resembles a slaughterhouse, there are people with steeled consciences, deeply buried in the concrete and iron of non-existence for their subversive intentions. People who have honoured their status, standing with respect and dedication in the passage of history. They confronted the lackeys of power face to face, not as spectators in the arena of the spectacle but as fighters. Sworn enemies of injustice and opponents of the status quo.

On a planet that increasingly looks like a prison, there are real prisoners with the flower of liberation rooted in their hearts. Prisoners of a silent unrelenting war against decadence and alienation that promises no security but thirsts for life. And every night they gaze at the stars as the walls of confinement rise. And each dawn grows taller with will and perseverance. Until the last dawn comes…

On a planet burning with rebellious hearts, there are still messages of resistance and optimism. Messages of complicity hidden under hoods, travelling to our ears through a machine gun click in the palaces of the uniformed memes in Chile, from a Molotov cocktail in the angry French suburbs, from a blast of anger and justice in the West Bank, from a sabotage against developmental frenzy in the Italian north, from the shattered windows of domestic consumerism.

Here where time has no power over our bodies and rage drowns you in a spit, the intensification of the international revolutionary struggle is our reminder of absolute freedom. It is our need and our desire. Whoever forgets the prisoners of the social and class war for an unrestrained world, forgets the war itself.

Unceasing solidarity with the unrepentant imprisoned revolutionaries who define life on the natural frontier of subversive law.

Strength and respect to the international revolutionary cells fighting in the present day justifying our captivity.
