Greece: Scenes from the riot in Exarcheia after a 16-year-old kid was shot in the head by cops in Thessaloniki

It was during the early hours of Monday 5 December 2022, when a 16 year old kid was shot in the head by a greek police officer of the DIAS motorcycle unit during a car chase in Thessaloniki.

He was accused that he filled his pick-up truck with 20 euros worth of petrol and left the petrol station without paying. Following the news and his dire physical condition, riots erupted in the city of Thessaloniki, located in the north of Greece, later on the same day. At the same time, in Athens, several different protests were held in the evening of December the 5th. The protest in Exarcheia, held in front of the memorial of Alexis Grigoropoulos, (a 15 year old kid that was shot dead by a cop on 6 December 2008, sparking the events that would lead to massive riots all over Greece, known as the December Revolt) soon turned into a march that led to a riot, as seen in the video.

It has to be noted, that today 6 December, protests have been planned in dozens of cities and towns all over Greece, in remembrance of the December Revolt and the murder of Alexandros Grigoropoulos by the police in Exarcheia 15 years ago to this day.

Anarchist prisoner Alfredo Cospito has been on a hunger strike to the death in Italian prisons since 20 October, demanding that the 41bis solitary isolation regime applied against him be lifted.

41bis is a sensory solitary isolation regime that constitutes torture and is one of the harshest special detention regimes in the European Union. The Italian state’s attack on Alfredo Cospito is not simply a state choice to eliminate an unrepentant anarchist guerrilla. It symbolises the full frontal assault on the choice of armed struggle and is carried out through anti-terrorist policies and special detention regimes.

The comrade’s strike is therefore both a struggle against torture and special conditions of detention and a battle so that the defence of the choice of armed struggle remains relevant and is not defeated through the murderous silence imposed on Alfredo Cospito. Athens, Greece: ‘Life is not so good.’ Claim for the incendiary attack on an LG van in Kaisariani

In the early morning hours of November 19 to 20, a van of the multinational company LG (life is good) in Kaisariani, was torched. Life is good only for the bosses and the rulers of this world. For us it becomes good only in moments like this, when we are attacking. We dedicate this attack to the Turkish fighters who are on hunger strike demanding a fair trial and to comrade Alfredo Cospito who is on hunger strike against the 41bis regime.

The battle of Prosfygika: Striking images of squatters’ resistance during a massive police operation

It all started in the early hours of Tuesday 22 November 2022 in Athens, Greece. In a massive operation, police special forces and squads of riot policemen invade one of the buildings of the Community of Squatted Prosfygika, break down the door of a flat and snatch two people. One of them is being accused of attacks against capitalist targets.* The operation ends and the police withdraws from the building.

Ten hours later, at about 17:00, and for no apparent reason, a massive police attack is being unleashed against two of the buildings where many people have gathered in solidarity to the community of Squatted Prosfygika, an array of 8 buildings built in the 1930s to house refugees following the “Asia Minor Disaster”.

Following the battle that ensued, scores of cops invaded the community and arrested 79 residents and people in solidarity, despite the fact that they initiated an attack with no other purpose than the attack itself, charging the arrestees with all sorts of misdemeanours for resisting their unprovoked attack. Amongst those arrested, there were even minors, a mother with her child, a pregnant woman, an accredited photo journalist and a lawyer. In the days of commemoration of the Polytechnic, we must not forget the anti-militarist implications of the uprising. In the midst of military dictatorship, one of the central slogans of the occupied Polytechnic in ’73 was “Out with NATO”. Picking up this thread, anarchy today must find a way of direct action against those who profit and gain from these wars.

While we try to develop anarchist considerations and analyses of every interstate war conflict, one of the most important aspects of the multifaceted anti-military struggle is often ignored: sabotaging the death machine on the ground we are on.

Since we are in NATO’s territory of influence, we have a duty to sabotage everything used by the armed forces of the Greek state and its allies, the arms industry, the financiers and those who give orders and make decisions.

The Greek justice system doesn’t have a problem, it is the problem itself

Direct Action Cells claim responsibility for the following incendiary attacks:

At the home of the judge Panagiota Yioupi, at dawn on Friday October 14, in the Glyfada area.

Youpi is one of the many servile puppets of the gang that operates under the name of Greek justice. She presided in the trial of the child rapist and member of the Mitsotakis family, Dimitris Lignadis, who was released from prison after being found guilty of raping underage children. She is a judge who is part of the influential entourage of the drug-dealing shipping tycoon Vangelis Marinakis, having issued a series of provocative rulings in favor of his interests during her term as a judge in Piraeus.

Yioupi is relentless when confronted with the poor, handing out years of sentences with the same ease she would hand out toys at a children’s party. But she has a peculiarity, she turns into a sensitive and soulful person when confronted by people from high society, with political connections, access and financial clout.

At the home of the judge Myrsini Papachiou, at dawn on Saturday, November 5, in the Zografou area.

Papachiou occupies the highest levels of the cesspool known as civil justice. The throne that she sits on as vice president of the Supreme Court is built from the pain of shattered human lives destroyed by prison.

Our decision to target her, apart from her institutional role, is related to the fact that she is currently involved in the Novartis scandal, being a member of the special court that is currently trying state prosecutors and government officials from the former SYRIZA government, as defendants for allegedly orchestrating a conspiracy in this particular case. She is also a court tribunal member for the upcoming trial of a former SYRIZA minister in a case regarding TV licenses. In fact, in order for Papahiou to be a member of these tribunals, she was hastily promoted to the rank of deputy-president a few days before the selection of tribunal members took place. Without any desire to get involved in the shifting alliances and infighting of this rotten political establishment, we recognize that this court is acting as a white-washing machine for sections of the political elite who are involved in the Novartis scandal. An international scandal that demonstrates with surgical precision how capitalism works. Multinationals, big pharma and politicians were complicit in the criminal regulation of drug prices in the health sector. They were complicit in the dismantling of public hospitals, in the operation of an organized international state-economic mafia that exploited in the worst possible way one of the most basic services, that of health. The government’s systematic attempt to present this scandal as a frame-up goes hand in hand with its refusal to demand compensation from the company. Our choice to strike at one of the puppets that are part of the government’s white-washing is intended to highlight all of the above. As Direct Action Cells we take responsibility for the incendiary attack on the home owned by the child rapist, pimp and member of the New Democracy party Elias Michos, and his ex-wife Elizabeth Lekka. In the early morning of 23/10, we placed a low-powered incendiary/explosive device at the entrance of their apartment building in the Attica area.

For those who still insist on not understanding the systemic support and cover-up of police and fascist attacks, for those who still insist that the judiciary is neutral and independent of the domestic bourgeois elite and the whole mechanism of consolidating and monopolizing the violence it practices, for those who were not satisfied with the acquittal of the pimp and child rapist of the New Democracy, Nikos Georgiadis, the “special-friendly treatment” of the mafia boss Menios Fourthiotis, but also the full release on parole of the New Democracy’s Petros Lefkowitz for the serial rapes of his daughter since she was 11 years old, we would like to list only a few of the recent cases where the full complicity of the civil justice system with the scum who destroyed lives was proven. All this is already known, we are simply quoting it in a condensed form to make it absolutely visible that STATE AND CAPITAL VICTORY, VIOLATE AND KILL, that their very nature is exploitation, barbarism, devaluation of lives and the imposition of terror, and that every aspect of political and social life is class and value-determined. It is a SYSTEM FOR PRODUCING TERROR, VIOLENCE AND DEATH, with the corresponding mechanisms of communication management and laundering.

Two years ago, after a solidarity meeting for those arrested during a march against the burning of garbage by Lafarge / AGET in Volos, the comrade Vassilis Maggos was arrested. The cops of the Magnesia Police Directorate torture him and, after covering their voracious violent appetites, throw him into the street. The blows were fatal for the comrade, who breathes his last breath on 13/7/2020. This state murder is still being covered up today by the state-judicial apparatus, as only three cops were indicted for the simple misdemeanour of “dangerous bodily harm”, while no names have been released, and now that the case is being tried, the “law and order enforcers” are committing violence against the people in solidarity who had gathered at the Volos courts.
Last summer, the deafening case of the pimping and rape of a minor girl by her father and a cop at the Ilioupolis police station came to light, with the knowledge and the brutal cover-up of the other state agents of that department. The pimps, rapists and cover-ups are still circulating among us, the case was covered up and buried, until the next and the time after that when we will learn again about trafficking and (child) rape rings involving cops and “prominent” households.
One year ago, on 22/10/2021, cops execute Nikos Sampanis in Perama, gunning him down with 36 bullets after a chase due to racial profiling, and defying orders from the operations centre not to follow the stolen vehicle. The cops claimed they were on “defense,” which of course was debunked by video footage and eyewitnesses. The follow-up is predictable. Immediately all seven were acquitted, returned to work as normal and are walking among us. Athens, Greece: Responsibility claim for the attack at the metro station Syngrou/Fix

In recent times we have seen the intensification of state repression which no doubt aims at the abolition of previous social and class gains. This intensification can be reflected in the violent repression of workers’ strikes, in the entry of police forces into universities, and in the expansion of the attack and repression on any form of social and class resistance (from the repeated police attacks on marches and gatherings to the recent attack on a concert in a university in Thessaloniki*). Amongst the above, another of the main peaks of this attack is taking place in Exarcheia, under the pretext of the metro stop and the redevelopment of the Strefi Hill, the state has launched an unprecedented attack in its attempt to change the political and social correlations within the neighbourhood. The constant presence of MAT riot police and the OPKE (armed SWAT style cop unit) playing the role of an occupying army in order to further territorialise the totalitarian doctrine of order and security within the neighbourhood is the most striking sign of this new strategy and the new reality that the state wants to impose.

However, what is happening in Exarcheia also has a very specific economic and class dimension, since both the metro stop and the redevelopment of the hill of Strefi are included within the more general plans of capital and the state for the reconfiguration of the urban fabric through the processes of redevelopment and gentrification, which have the sole purpose of creating new fields of profitability on the backs of the working class. The airbnb, alternative bars etc. that are popping up one after the other, in combination with the metro and the redevelopment of the Strefi and the army of occupation that is trying to suppress any form of resistance create the necessary conditions for the methodical transformation of the neighbourhood into a politically sterile alternative centre of consumption. Athens, Greece: Responsibility claim for an incendiary attack on a MAT riot police truck in Kaisariani by ‘Incendiary Committee’

On Thursday 6 October 2022 we carried out an incendiary attack with Molotov cocktails on a passing MAT (riot police) convoy in Kaisariani. In his panic to escape, the cop driving it drove into bystander cars on the road.

We live in the era of constant and generalized war. Every declaration of war is accompanied by a corresponding invocation of the Crisis. Financial, fiscal, health, energy, food, climate… This spectacular ritual of the state apparatus is the prologue to every old and modern war manual: every war operation presupposes the imposition of discipline and rallying at the rear through the spread of fear towards the enemies of the day. A state of permanent emergency to which we tend to become addicted.

In a collapsing world, the Dominion holds on to its monopoly of producing mass insecurity by tooth and nail. If the dangers and threats invoked by those above are increasing in numbers, the orders and commands directed downwards show a clear geometric progression. This is the balance of the violent restructuring of our life, the new social contract of modern totalitarianism. Or in the words of Petsas1 “adaptation or death”. Social experience can translate these words without equivocation. Memorandum or bankruptcy. Mass incarceration or collapse of the ΕΣΥ (National Health Service). Graveyard silence or beatings and fines. Compulsory vaccinations or redundancies. Preventative power cuts or general black outs. And the list may soon stretch to the light bulb switch or supermarket receipt.

The realm of fear and insecurity is the baptism font of the new form of the State and its Violence. The modern capitalist world breeds only police. Police of thought and attitudes, police of norms and culture, police overt and covert, police with shields and automatic weapons, police of crowd management and police of surgical operations, police in the suburbs and in the city centres, police who demand identity cards, passports and health certificates, police who beat, charge and execute, police who sometimes resemble an ideological army and sometimes a fascist battalion. Police of every kind, in every place, in every spot on the map, with multiple jurisdictions and no barriers. Greece/Italy: News and update on the situation of our comrade Dayvid Ceccarelli

On June 29, in Athens, Dayvid was arrested. He had been sentenced to 6 years for the clashes of October 15, 2011 in Rome by the Supreme Court last May 25.

For him the European Arrest Warrant has been requested immediately after the sentence.

He is currently detained in the prison of Korydallos. On July 13 he will have the first hearing before the Greek court for the validation of the EAW.

The hearing regarding the EAW against Dayvid was held today. The decision of the court has been postponed for about forty days to allow the translation of all the documents.

In the meantime, Dayvid remains in Korydallos prison.

The coordinates for a solidarity fund for legal and living expenses will be announced soon.

On August 18, the Greek court has expressed itself accepting the request for the execution of the European arrest warrant issued by the Italian state for Dayvid, anarchist prisoner, sentenced to 6 years in prison by the Supreme Court last May 25 with the accusation of devastation and looting for the clashes of October 15, 2011 in Rome.

His transfer to an Italian prison should take place in the next few weeks.

In the meantime, a fund has been set up to raise funds in solidarity with Dayvid.
