Resisting Techno-Tyranny: A Dialogue

Posted on 2022/12/06 by darknights

This conversation between Paul Cudenec and the Italian group Resistenze al nanomondo was first published in the July 2022 issue of the printed journal L’urlo della Terra and has recently also been made available online, again in Italian.

1. Resistenze al nanomondo: Can you can tell us about your story, your path, when you started developing a critique of techno-scientific developments and what thinkers you learned from?

Paul Cudenec: I don’t think I could separate my critique of techno-scientific developments from the rest of my opinions and analysis. I have been an anarchist for 30 years now, but even before then, in my youth, I felt a strong instinctive aversion to high-tech consumer society. On the one hand it was associated with everything that I most disliked – big business, the state, the military, authority and control in general. On the other hand it stood against everything that I most appreciated – nature, freedom, community, a sense of historical and cultural continuity. The arrival of CCTV cameras in England was a wake-up moment for me. I worked at the time as a journalist with a local newspaper in one of the first towns to have cameras installed and, since I knew for a fact that there was very little crime there, it was clear to me that this project was nothing to do with fighting crime, as was claimed, but was the roll-out of something much more sinister. I wrote a punk song about this in the mid-1990s (which I put online last year), warning about “the cameras that steal our liberty” and the techno-tyrants who were going to scan our DNA, put microchips in our brains and turn us into robots. With the local anarchist group, which I subsequently helped to create, we used to hold annual protests against the cameras, marking the anniversary of their installation as “Big Brother’s Birthday”.

As you will gather from the above, George Orwell was, unsurprisingly, an influence on me. The history of the Luddites was another inspiration (via Kirkpatrick Sale among others), along with anarcho-publications like Green Anarchist, SchNEWS, Do or Die, Anarchy: A Journal of Desire Armed and various EF! publications. I also read David Watson’s Against the Megamachine, Fredy Perlman’s Against His-story, Against Leviathan, the Unabomber Manifesto plus a lot by John Zerzan and Derrick Jensen. I have more recently been influenced by reading the likes of Miguel Amorós, Jacques Ellul, Theodore Roszak, Charlene Spretnak, Renaud Garcia… But intertwined with that thread of my self-education have been other inspirations. The English nature mystic Richard Jefferies has been very important to me, as has René Guénon, who combined his metaphysics with a strong critique of modernity. I have also read elsewhere about sufism, Taoism, comparative mythology, English folklore, Indian philosophy, German idealism, Jewish anti-capitalist romanticism, Jungian psychology… What interests me, above all, are the connections between these accounts and traditions, or rather, perhaps, the new space that is opened up for our reflection when we consider them together, in the same conceptual context. Athens, Greece: Taking responsibility – Against the war industry by Anarchists

Posted on 2022/11/25 by darknights

Taking responsibility – Against the war industry

In the days of commemoration of the Polytechnic, we must not forget the anti-militarist implications of the uprising. In the midst of military dictatorship, one of the central slogans of the occupied Polytechnic in ’73 was “Out with NATO”. Picking up this thread, anarchy today must find a way of direct action against those who profit and gain from these wars.

While we try to develop anarchist considerations and analyses of every interstate war conflict, one of the most important aspects of the multifaceted anti-military struggle is often ignored: sabotaging the death machine on the ground we are on.

Since we are in NATO’s territory of influence, we have a duty to sabotage everything used by the armed forces of the Greek state and its allies, the arms industry, the financiers and those who give orders and make decisions.

Russia: Actions of radical resistance, carried out by individuals or small groups, continue all over the country

Posted on 2022/10/22 - 2022/10/22 by darknights

Actions of radical resistance, carried out by individuals or small groups, continue all over Russia.

Arson attacks

Tomsk

On October 13 in the evening in Tomsk there was an attempt of arson in military registration and enlistment office building on Moskovsky highway. Firefighters and a police squad arrived on the scene in the evening. Any details of the action were withheld by the authorities.

Cherkessk

On the night of October 15, the military registration and enlistment office in the capital of Karachay-Cherkessia Republic caught fire. A video shows that the fire engulfed the first floor and the facade of the building. There are no details about the extent of the damage to the military registration and enlistment office. It is reported that this is an old military registration and enlistment office building, currently unused.

Buryatia

17 October. In Mukhorshibir village in Buryatia at night an unknown guerilla attacked the military enlistment office in the village. He threw a Molotov cocktail on the roof of the building, but the fire only covered 2 square meters of the facade and did not penetrate inside. The fire was noticed by a security guard and extinguished.

Revolt in the Army

Details of the shooting at the shooting range in Belgorod region on October 15 are gradually emerging. Three soldiers – a Daghestani, an Azerbaijani and an Adygean – said that “this is not our war” and tried to write a report saying that they did not want to serve any more. The target of the attack was Lieutenant Colonel Andrei Lapin, the head of the training ground, who stated that “this is a holy war,” and then made an insulting remark about the Muslim faith. An hour and a half after the verbal conflict, the servicemen went to the firing range, where the three soldiers involved in the argument took their weapons with live ammunition, asked the Muslims to move away from Lapin, and began firing. Thirteen servicemen were killed and there were wounded. The shooters were two or three citizens of Tajikistan, one of them might have been mobilized by force or tricked, he was a migrant worker and had never expressed a desire to go to war and then suddenly disappeared. Russia: A month of incendiary attacks against the war

Posted on 2022/10/18 by darknights
Shchiolkovo (Moscow region), October 16, 2022

Source: Sans Nom

Shchiolkovo (Moscow region)
On the night of October 16 at about 1:30 am, an unknown person threw a molotov through the window of the military registration and enrollment office, after breaking it, causing a fire inside. This is the second time that the office was attacked in this way, after the first time on May 18, when furniture and personal files of conscripts were destroyed.

Votkinsk (Volga)
On the night of October 14, an unknown person broke into the military registration and enlistment office (where two policemen were standing in front of it) from a neighboring building, broke a side window of one of the offices on the first floor, and threw molotovs inside. The guard at the military office did begin to put out the fire after hearing the sound of breaking glass… but in the process of putting out the fire, many documents were flooded.

Archangel (Bashkiria), October 8, 2022

Archangel (Bashkiria)
On the night of October 8/9, an unknown person threw a molotov through the window of a military registration and enlistment office, causing a lot of damage inside.

Goryachi Klyuch (Krasnodar), October 6, 2022

Goryachi Klyuch (Krasnodar)
On the night October 6 at about 1:00 am, an unknown person threw two molotovs at the military registration and enlistment office. A fire soon broke out in the entrance of the building, but the guards heard the sound of breaking glass and the fire was extinguished before it spread.

Zyuzino (Moscow region)
On October 5, in the village of Zyuzino, an unknown person broke into the territory of a military unit at night and threw four molotovs over the fence of a barrack. Two of the bottles broke and caught fire, damaging the building’s siding.

Salavat (Bashkiria)
On the night of October 3, unknown people threw a molotov into the office of the local branch of the Communist Party (which actively supports the regime in its war in Ukraine). The fire was eventually smothered, but managed to smoke the whole room, covering it with soot. Remember that on September 24, the entrance to the premises of the United Russia party (in power) had been burned in Salavat using flaming tires.

Tuva (Siberia)
On October 1, around 2 a.m., the military registration and enlistment office in Kyzylsky district, 28 Shakhterskaya Street, was set on fire. The extent of the damage is not known. Continue reading “Russia: A month of incendiary attacks against the war” →

Oust-Ilimsk, Russia: Making one’s war

Posted on 2022/10/15 - 2022/10/15 by darknights

Source: Sans Nom

Monday 26 September 2022, some days after the partial mobilisation decided by the Russian president, a 25 year old unemployed youth, with joyful walking, went into his hometown recruiting center. More precisely in Oust-Ilimsk, 600km north of Irkoutsk, in the middle of Siberia. Around noon, he went up to the building fourth floor, before reaching the meeting room were there already was the future recruits.

In front of them was standing the military center commandant, Alexander Eliseev, soon fullfilling the room with his martial speeches and shouting his first orders. Then, Ruslan Zinin said to the youths around him : “nobody will fight” and “now, we all gonna come home !”. Then, armed with his convictions, he pulled a hand crafted gun out of his jacket, and shot in the officer’s face. Useless to say the commandant did right away shut his big mouth when crumbling to the ground, before falling into a coma and being carried to hospital in absolute emergency.

Ruslan Zinin didn’t receive a mobilisation order to go to war in far away Ukraine, contrarly to his cousin or his best friend. He went to the recruiting center by himself, to make his own with a hand crafted weapon, before unfortunately falling into enemies claws, trying to escape. To this day also 54 recruiting centers or military administration buildings have been burned all across Russia since the beginning of war.

Italy: ‘The winter of capital’

Posted on 2022/10/01 - 2022/10/14 by darknights

The winter of capital

This weekend’s elections were very important for the fate of Europe. No, we are not talking about the miserable staging of the Italian round of elections, but about the referendums held in some occupied territories of Ukraine for annexation to the Russian Federation.

With them, the proxy and regionalized “world war” being fought between Russia and NATO takes a formal turn with important practical consequences. From the moment the Donbass, Kherson and Zaporozhye officially become part of Russia, Putin’s regime can claim that any Ukrainian attack in these territories will be read as an attack on Russia itself. The result is the order for general mobilization, the proclamation of martial law, and the transformation of its industry into a war economy to defend the homeland.

With this strategic shift, the Russian government moves away from the rhetoric of Special Military Operation – a neologism taken in inspiration from “international police missions,” “peacekeeping missions,” “humanitarian wars,” and other fanciful Doctor Strangelove sorties of the much-hated West – to the declaration of outright war. Demonstrating the farcical nature of any electoral mechanism, which always photographs the power relations between dominants and never an abstruse as non-existent “popular will,” Putin ordered partial mobilization even before knowing the referendum outcome, recalling the first three hundred thousand reservists.

From now on, all those states that have been arming the Kiev regime for months and that have enabled it to resist so effectively and to counterattack with unexpected successes become cobelligerent. Those who arm a state to which war is formally declared are also (almost) at war. Europe and the United States will now have to take responsibility for a conflict that they have fueled by all means, with the aim of bleeding the Russian enemy dry, hoping to achieve maximum results with minimum effort, i.e., by sending Ukrainian ascari1 to their deaths.

Rather than expire in the partisan readings of the court pen-pushers and opposing supporters, which as internationalists and enemies of every state we cannot but reject, reiterating our hostility against all sides in the war, it is worth dwelling on a couple of thoughts. Kassel, Germany: Incendiary attack of the car park of the German army

Posted on 2022/09/25 - 2022/09/25 by darknights

de.indymedia, August 17, 2022

On the night of Thursday to Friday of last week, two vehicles were completely burned in the district of Bad Willhelmshöhe in Kassel (Hessen region). The two cars that were completely destroyed by fire were two civilian vehicles belonging to the German army fleet, parked near the Bundeswehr technical school. The cops say the damage was in the mid-five figures. A small drop in the bucket compared to the huge sums currently being spent on rearmament.

Since all NATO member countries are required to spend at least 2% of their GDP on war preparations, spending on military and armaments products is skyrocketing in Europe. Since then, the German army has been subtly presented to us as an “antiquated troop, reduced to a pitiful size by cost-cutting” and “not fit for combat”. The aim is to convince the public that the huge investments in the military-industrial complex are justified and serve the security of Europe. When at the beginning of this year the war in Ukraine escalated again and the Russian ruling class sent its army to finish annexing the territories in the east of Ukraine that have been disputed for years, the calls for the necessary rearmament of Europe finally found complacent ears.

In a fast-track parliamentary procedure, 100 billion euros of “special budget” were made available to the German army, in addition to arms spending that had already risen to 56 billion dollars by 2021. German arms companies, whose war material will now be massively sold to the Ukraine and produced for NATO armies, are rubbing their bloodstained hands and can say with a clear conscience: this time we are on the right side. Buoyed by this mood, Rheinmetall CEO Armin Papperger, who normally avoids publicity as is appropriate in this industry, is no longer missing an opportunity to promote his group, whose share price has doubled since the start of the war in Ukraine. The fact that the German arms industry is only interested in profits and has no morals is evident in the arms trade with the fascist Erdogan regime in Turkey or with Saudi Arabia, whose army helped to crush the Arab Spring protests in Bahrain in 2011. The big German arms groups have also sold their war machines to Russia, although after the annexation of Crimea an arms embargo was decreed by the EU. In order to do this, the arms dealers used, as is also usual in this sector, a legal loophole to circumvent the embargo. Rome, Italy: ‘Even the rich bleed’ Communique claim for the parcel bomb against Alessandro Profumo, CEO of Leonardo by ‘Augusto Masetti Brigade’ Informal Anarchist Federation – International Revolutionary Front

Posted on 2022/08/11 - 2022/08/11 by darknights

EVEN THE RICH BLEED

COMMUNIQUÉ CLAIM FOR PARCEL BOMB AGAINST ALESSANDRO PROFUMO

The horrors of war move sensitive souls. To us, however, they remind us that it is injustice that dominates this world. The mangled bodies are always those of poor people, it is never a rich man who dies, who loses a hand.

We do not think we can compete with the violence of the state; your capacity for destruction and death is unparalleled. In recent years you have shown it in Syria, in Iraq, today in Ukraine, and we saw it with the torture and slaughter in Italian prisons in March 2020. We have not forgotten or forgiven.

We cannot compete with your violence and probably do not even have the guts. Instead, we believe in the necessity of revolutionary violence, in action that opens glimpses of freedom. We believe in the contagion of ideas that walk through actions.

Once again the Informal Anarchist Federation becomes a tool for revolutionary communication and propagation of anarchist action. An instrument to which all comrades can adhere by affixing their signatures to the acronym FAI-FRI, putting us in communication without the dangers derived from direct knowledge. A tool with which we can express ourselves, even dialogue and confront each other, in the knowledge that we are talking to comrades who have put their lives and thus their freedom at risk. When words are too many and consequent actions are few, it is up to us alone to reverse this trend.

We brought a little reminder of violence home to those who with state violence do their business.

We sent the parcel bomb that arrived June 27 in Rome to Alessandro Profumo, CEO of Leonardo S.p.A., the state-owned company that produces weapons of war and cutting-edge technological devices. A collector and boardroom climber, a grand boot licker of universities, Profumo is one of those people we are unlikely to see bleeding from the wars with which he enriches himself. Leonardo has done business trading arms with both Russia and Ukraine, today its shares are flying on the stock market, and the Italian government is promising a shower of billions coming in thanks to the NATO-mandated arms race. Their capital is only ever matched by our suffering and sacrifice.

Can you smell the perfume of rage? We are coming to restore some of your terror, scum!

Leonardo is at the forefront of technological development and research in Europe, for example being repeatedly commended for its achievements in the field of aerospace engineering. The coincidence is not surprising since war and technical innovation have always been interconnected.

It is with technology that they ruin our lives, that they spy on us, that they drive us into misery. It is with developments in techno-science that aim to reshape the social fabric, making war possible. Let us strike at those responsible.

Let us call for an international campaign of action against the oligarchs who enrich themselves with war, the masters of energy and the techno-science and industrial sectors. Each with the means and methods they prefer, making their case or letting the facts speak for themselves.

We dedicate this action to Alfredo Cospito: remove our comrade from 41 bis or you will have to start washing the blood of the jailers.

No resignation, no truce, no peace. For international fraternity and revolutionary action.
