Chile: Interview with synthesis anarchists Boina Anarquista

Interview between synthesis anarchists Boina Anarquista in Chile and JURNAL ANARKI in Indonesia.

1. What motivates you to create this counter-information newspaper?

A: Hello, good day. Well, the platform began as a newspaper, edited precariously with Word. What motivated us was that nearly 11 years ago, in 2013, when the waves of the student movement in Chile were still present, we started researching and came across a book about anarchist propaganda in Chile. We were amazed by how much of it existed in the 1920s.

Around that time, there were other physical-format newspapers: El Surco (2009-2013), El Amanecer (from Chillán, in central-southern Chile) (2011-2013), El Sol Ácrata (from Calama, northern Chile; 2011-2024), Acracia (from Valdivia, far south of Chile; 2012-2019) and Solidaridad, a Libertarian-Communist newspaper, aligned with the branch closest to especifismo or platformism (2010-2016).

It was within this context that we decided to found a newspaper called Periódico La Boina (2014), which only released 7 issues. Financial problems, time constraints, and lack of coordination led to its discontinuation, but we noticed that the website’s visits kept growing, reaching over 100,000 per year.

The need to communicate, reflect, critique, share, and discuss with other comrades enriches our ideas and fosters camaraderie, especially through printed propaganda. What I see as a downside—and something we are also guilty of—is that there’s a lot of digital propaganda circulating on social media. While it’s positive to have more contact with comrades from other places, the information becomes more instantaneous, preventing deeper reflection. It also introduces anxiety over likes, making everything faster.

We believe it’s necessary to return to printed propaganda without neglecting the digital. It’s essential to discuss and reflect as the anarchists of the past used to do.

2. In our informal conversation, you mentioned your involvement in a historical archive project. Could you tell us more about it?

A: Yes, I am currently part of a group called Archivo Histórico La Revuelta, which has existed since 2009. The mission of the archive is to preserve the memory of anarchist history. Archivo La Revuelta publishes a magazine called Acontratiempo, where we present research by comrades on the history of anarchism in Chile and elsewhere.

The issue is that, according to some historians, anarchism arrived in Chile in the 1890s and lasted until 1930, when the last mass anarchist unions existed (of course, there were experiences in the 1950s and 1960s, and we have found active comrades in the 1970s, but they are marginal compared to Marxist groups). After that period, anarchism experienced a revival, gradually growing with counterculture and punk in the 1990s. So the archive has the mission of preserving anarchist memory in this region, both from the 20th century and from the late 1990s and early 2000s. There are many struggles led by younger comrades, as young as 16 years old, who may not be as familiar with the struggles fought in the early 2000s, for example.

That’s why the archive doesn’t just focus on the history of anarchism from 100 years ago but also on the present. We aim to collect and reconstruct the history of anarchism from the 1990s, when there were many zines and the first newspapers, to understand what interested comrades of those years and to share those struggles and discussions with younger comrades so they can learn about the efforts and ideas of those who came before them.

On the other hand, anarchist research has emerged in recent years. Its main historians might include Eduardo Godoy, Manuel Lagos, or study groups like the Grupo de Estudio José Domingo Gómez Rojas, which has the Editorial Eleuterio.

Currently, the archive operates in a physical space called Casa Anarquista La Termita, which is shared with other anarchist projects. Also, with comrades dedicated to research, we are also organizing the IV Congress on Research about Anarchism(s) – Santiago – October 2025. The first Congress was held in Buenos Aires, Argentina (2016); its second edition was in Montevideo, Uruguay (2019), and São Paulo, Brazil (2022).

Chile: Interview with the band La Lira Libertaria

Interview between the band La Lira Libertaria in Chile and JURNAL ANARKI in Indonesia.

1. What motivates you in creating this band? The song “Armate” feels like a homage to the memory of insurrectionary Mauricio Morales, how do you elaborate your music and band with anarchist revolt?

The band was formed to show political solidarity and fill the spaces that we frequented around 2009 and a little before: squat houses and social centers mainly. At first the Lira was a paper piece of popular poetry that we printed that year and that rescues the tradition of the popular poets of the late 19th century and early 20th century, but with anarchist content. The formation as a musical band began later around 2010 in the context of the “Bombs Case” and sought to contribute to the spaces that were hit. The song Ármate is undoubtedly a tribute to the comrade Mauricio Morales Duarte who fell in action on May 22, 2009. The lyrics are an adaptation of one of his poems, and the girl who sings it with us was his partner, which is little known. We wrote it for the second commemoration of his death, and we presented it at the now defunct “Cueto con Andes” social center, where Punky Mauri himself visited and contributed to. Some time later, comrade Luisa Toledo would make her words even more well-known: beautifully violent. Sometimes people confuse this and think that they are words from our dear grandmother Luisa, but she took them because it was her favorite song by the band. That way, the songs and its stories are directly related to our recent political processes, and to the revolt and resistance against the neoliberal model in Chile.

2. From our informal discussion in the past you hinted that most of you come from the specific tendency of combative anarchy, can you tell us more about this?

Yes, we all met at the time we were studying, around 2006 onwards, and we were part of the riots and street-based struggles, like so many young people in Santiago. That is why we lived through the processes of the student rebellions of those years and the protests for the release of political prisoners, environmental projects, the denunciation of capitalist democracy and the anarchist movement.

The insurrectional anarchist movement was constantly attacking the system in that decade and even later, when the band was already formed. That’s what our songs are about, that’s why in them there are stories of attack, escape, prison and joyful rebellion too. The band grew up with this marginal discourse, and with the October 2019 revolt it achieved greater notoriety, since it had been talking about the contradictions of the capitalist model for a long time.

3. People from non-latin speaking countries are amazed by the growing anarchist tension in Chile, especially the diverse anarchic movement, the regeneration of the youth, and the especially heavy repression that the anarchists faced amidst all of this yet still retain their combative and insurrectionary action – what’s really making all of this possible?

As I see it, the commitment to the struggle is explained since it is part of generations and generations of combatants, since the times of dictatorship (1973-1990) and even before. It is linked to our families, to our disappeared detainees, and to the indigenous culture itself, which tells us that the Mapuche tirelessly resisted the Spanish.

In that political environment we grow. This is even stronger considering that democracy stained its hands with the blood of the fighters against the dictatorship, and imprisoned those who continued fighting against capitalism. Figures like Claudia López, murdered in the commemoration of the coup d’état in 1998, and so many other Chilean and Mapuche young people, this fueled since childhood our desire to fight, our desire for freedom and our love for our compañeros.

Perhaps that is the most important component, and what explains everything: the love of the struggle and the memory of the comrades who fell fighting and those who still fight to this day. That is why anarchists, despite being beaten time and time again, maintain their action, because it is also a way of carrying within us our beloved compañeros who were taken from us. Text by Marco Camenisch for the day of Memory and Kontrakultura

Dear comrades and brothers and sisters,

To begin with, thank you very much for this initiative of commemoration by our dear compa and brother Punky Mauri and for being able to participate from a distance (geographically!) with some poor words.

On the one hand, commemorations do not excite me too much. Because dear compa and brother Punki Mauri is present and alive in my mind and in my life many days of each year. At this moment or another or without specific occasion as a presence that gives me courage in moments of courage, joy and sadness, reminding me of our common courage, our common struggle in the past.

And present and future! For this reason, on the other hand, this commemoration is very just and important. Comrade and brother Punki Mauri with all our other fallen reminds us and continues to live in our common duty (individual duty in front of our conscience!) to consolidate and give continuity to this struggle in a historical moment in which the situations, the reasons and the necessity of our resistance and struggle become more and more urgent and just as the only hope for our life, for the life of our planet! And for living a dignified life! Reminding us that we are nature, freedom and life that defends itself by attacking those who definitely want to exterminate us!

In this sense, this commemoration is very important for the continuity of our struggle, transmitting from generation to generation our experiences and “historical” memories as a living contribution to the present and future struggles.

And alone, but firmly, in these struggles of all our past, present and future fighting generations our brother Mauri and all our fallen comrades and brothers and sisters remain and will always remain alive!

With a warm and strong embrace to all of you,

Marco/martino

Words by Gabriel Pombo da Silva and Elisa di Bernardo for the day Memory and Kontrakultura

May 22nd, 2024

And it still seems like yesterday… a comrade fell in action… and soon we know his name: Mauricio Morales!!!

Coherence, the determination to put together an idea as a project does not seem to be part of the path of many comrades… there has always existed and will always exist the singular individual who stands out among his comrades for his revolutionary exemplarity.

It has always been difficult to open the way and transmit confidence to our own… Our own? Yes! Our own!

Convinced iconoclasts, we believe that “our own” are those who practice what they say and with them we recognize ourselves in discourse and practice. We know the price of coherence… like Prometheus we share the word, the experience and the torment… we believe in what we think and consequently we speak.

We are persecuted when we say ours because in our discourse and practice we are irretrievable for the state and capital. And yet, indecently, when they kill us or lock us up, those who have turned ethics into an alternative programmed leisure enjoy the undeserved glow of individual rebellion.

None of our people lives and dies in vain… existence teaches us strongly refractory individuals and the absorption or alienation they relentlessly fight against.

We remember Mauricio with his wide and luminous smile… a smile that always accompanied his determination, the power of his words, the coherence of his actions.

To be consistent with our own ideas is a choice of Extreme Love and he knew (we know) that this could mean imprisonment or death and it was death that found him that early morning 15 years ago.

We continue to find our comrade and brother Mauricio beautifully violent in every sigh of dignity, in every breath of rebellion, in every action of solidarity and in every cry of Anarchy.

To fight against the States and all authorities is a duty and a revolutionary pleasure just as it is to fight against oblivion.

Dear Mauricio, we do not forget you and here we remain on the warpath without ever lowering our guard.

We embrace you in the creative chaos that drives us at every moment to reach Freedom and Total Liberation!

Long live Anarchy!

Long Live Freedom!

Punky Mauri present!

Words from Espacio Fénix in memory of Mauricio Morales

In memory of Punki Mauri

The complicity and affinity towards a comrade who met his death attacking the Gendarmerie School, on May 22, 2009 – 15 years ago – calls us and motivates us to raise a day in his memory.

We seek to contribute to the expansion of his memory, to the propagation of his ideas/actions, to the transfer of his life, so that it can circulate among new comrades, thus extending ties, crossing territories, temporalities, generations and all the fictitious barriers that could separate us.

We believe it is important and vital not to leave our dead in oblivion and anecdotes. Rescuing their lives, their war choices, their contributions, contributes to strengthen and nurture our own journey. It puts up a fight against death and combats stagnation, making it possible for us to meet with different comrades, regardless of whether we were close, whether we live in the same territory, speak the same language or walk the same paths of time.

The black memory, as a weapon, a tool; the memory that gives us strength when we seem to lose it, that allows us to grow, in ideas, practices, values; the black memory that nourishes and teaches us, that allows us to express love, complicity, hatred of the enemy, complicity between comrades and the pain of absences.

The black memory helps us to cross the sky in any of the strokes of the kaotic star. Each one chooses how to express it, how to give it life, how it manifests itself, individually or collectively. The important thing is that he/she throws him/herself into the challenge of fighting against oblivion and domination, as he/she sees fit.

We can all contribute to the expansion of memory, in a permanent exercise, where the last word has not been said and there is still much to contribute, to say/do. This fire of black memory is cared for, fed and spread among all of us.

Mauri, tireless warrior, anarchist of action (aspiring anarchist as he liked to say), walked different paths of the anti-authoritarian idea, deploying different tools and fighting domination in every way he could.

He sharpened different spears with which he tried to stab power, its defenders and false critics. Avid in the search for coherence between deed and word, he set his sights on the jailers, trying to annihilate every last bastion of prison society.

That’s how death found him, attacking, eager to be a contribution to Anarchy. And although that stab of pain went straight to the hearts of his comrades in ideas/practice, 15 years after that cold dawn, we are still here, gathered to remember him, to talk about him, but, above all, to dialogue with him, with his ideas, successes, mistakes, with his attempts and continuous searches to keep Anarchy alive.

In this way we also discover that in the pain of absence there is also some beauty… the complicity and love for a comrade show us that death is not absolute, that it does not erase what we have lived, nor does it stop new bonds. Fifteen years after his death, Mauri is still alive among all of us.

This activity does not pretend to be a pleasant panorama, a variety of different “entertaining” acts, no. It intends to give space to different comrades, with their different expressions and ways of making memory, but always proposing to contribute to the anarchic memory.

We decided to give space to the words and reflections of comrades in prison, not only because it seems important to us to listen to them, but also because we want to contribute to the construction of that tunnel through which their ideas escape and generate that bridge that connects them with a brother who died attacking the jailers’ school, the same institution that today imprisons them.

May the idea not die, may the action spread like the worst black plague.

We continue embracing kaos.

Punki Mauri presente!

15 years after your death in action. MAURICIO MORALES YOU LIVE IN THE FIRE.

“On my back lying on the floor of the street, with the frozen cement, I see my fall pass close by and I see myself lying on this very spot… with my heart beating in a hurry and the rain washing hard the blood from my surroundings”

Mauricio Morales

“We keep our dead in our hearts. We carry them with us in wild moments when the anarchist attack disturbs the order of this world. Anarchy has neither victims nor heroes.”

Conspiracy Cells of Fire

On May 27, 2024 at a few hours before midnight we stormed a public transport bus. With a clear objective, to break the monotony of the city’s rhythm and illuminate the cold night of May in memory of the anarchist comrade Mauricio Morales.

15 years ago… on May 22, 2009 around 1:30 am, a roar shook the silent and cold night of the Matta neighborhood. The wit that transported in the direction of the damned school of gendarmerie of Chile had detonated in advance, the Punky Mauri as he was known in the anarchist environments, died at the instant of the detonation melting with the device that had been arranged to place in that nefarious institution.

Today we remember you with action. That bomb in which you met your death resounds in every complicit gesture that attempts against domination.

We want to contribute to the call for a Black May, an anti-prison May, an anarchist May. It is still time to generate and strengthen offensive complicities, to keep alive the anarchic action. To keep alive the memory of those who went on the offensive, to be an embrace in solidarity with those who are in the dungeons of capital, to contribute in some way to break its precious social peace.

More than a year after their arrest, we embrace the anarchist comrades Aldo and Lucas Hernandez, this also goes for you.

We call for action and to make visible the prison situation and the attempt to bury through isolation the Anarchist comrade Francisco Solar.

Freedom for: Juan Aliste, Marcelo Villaroel, Mónica Caballero, Joaquín García, Aldo and Lucas Hernández, Francisco Solar, Juan Flores, Anti-speciesist Prisoners, Political Prisoners and Mapuche Political Prisoners.

Chile: Video in memory of Mauri, Canal Barrial 3

Posted on 2024/06/06 by darknights

Since 2005, Canal Barrial 3, located in the Yungay neighborhood, a place where during those years there was a strong anti-authoritarian presence housed in various social centers, has been operating.

Mauri actively participated in this television channel, making programs, broadcasting activities and financing.

These images were found in the archives of the channel, and correspond first to an activity carried out by the channel itself, after having suffered a strange and violent theft of the transmitters in the social center “Cueto con Andes”. The later images correspond to the dismantling of the donated antenna, which would allow transmissions in the neighborhood.

15 years after Mauri’s death in action, we remember him from his anarchic and committed multiformity.

No experience can be summarized with a bit of ink and paper.
Even less the experience of someone who decided to provoke the dominators with every possible way and any place. There are no pages which can effectively illustrate someone who died while fighting against authority. Inside these pages therefore, is not the whole of Mauri’s life.
We do not condense all of his experiences and the moments our paths met.
We honestly desire that this is not the last collection of his writings.
We are not owners of his thoughts, the events he experienced or his analyses.
We hope that more material related to him will come to light, not as a fetish, not as a day on the calendar, but probably as a memory longing its moment.
