Minera Aclara: Rare Earths, Geopolitics and Extraction in Abya Yala (Chile, Brazil)

Minera Aclara is a project promoted by the company REE Uno SpA, now known as Aclara Resources, which aims to extract rare earths from two sites, one in the hills of Penco, territory occupied by the Chilean state, and the other in Goiás, Brazilian territory. Rare earths are a set of 17 minerals mainly used for weapons and the technology industry (batteries, luxury electric cars, wind turbines, etc.), everything that is sold today as green technologies. These technologies, which are not for mass use but rather for industry and the military and economic elites, are sustained by the extraction of raw materials from Abya Yala region and other territories that have historically faced colonization by world powers. Currently, Penco and Goiás are territories that are in the global spotlight of extractivism, representing a strategic point in the war for control of the production of these substances.

The project to be installed in Penco consists of three rare earth extraction zones, consisting of open-pit mines with a diameter of approximately 45 hectares, equivalent to 45 soccer fields, and a depth of between 40 and 60 meters, which is where the concentrations of these minerals are found. On the other hand, the module that they intend to install in Goiás comprises an expandable area of 1,500 hectares.

What do we know about rare earth mining?

For years, China has controlled rare earth mining, generating more than 95% of the world’s production of this mineral alloy. A terrible example of the consequences of this industry was what happened in Baotou, the world’s largest supplier of rare earths, where a former pasture was turned into a toxic lake of waste from the extraction process, “composed of a cocktail of acids, heavy metals, carcinogens, and radioactive material used to process the 17 most sought-after minerals in the world.”[1]

But this monopoly is being threatened by other capitalist powers: the US and Canada, which intend to compete with China for control of rare earth extraction. This is where the territories of Abya Yala, from the colonialist perspective of these two countries, appear as key suppliers for carrying out this plan, just as Boutu was for China. Currently, the company Minera Aclara presents itself to the outside world as a “sustainable” alternative to the Chinese extractive market and aims to compete against Chinese control through the extraction of rare earths in Goiás, Brazil, and Penco, Chile. Lyon, France : Three new arrests in the Lafarge case

After two waves of arrests in June, 3 people were arrested this week in connection with the Lafarge case.
Early on Tuesday morning, November 28, three people were arrested in connection with the Lafarge case.
They were arrested by the SDAT, then taken into police custody in Lyon, where they were questioned for 3 days, before being released early Thursday evening.

Already in June, one person had been arrested in Lyon, and had published an account.
An article published in September detailed the invasive investigation methods used in this case.

Athens, Greece: Sabotage actions against the redevelopment works of Strefi Hill

The Hill of Strefis is under police occupation.

The works carried out in the last six months are destroying the flora and fauna of the hill, while the operation of its regeneration seeks to isolate it from the movements of the area and the neighbourhood in general, aiming to make it a tourist attraction.All this with the cooperation of the Municipality and the real estate and investment company PRODEA, which through the regeneration of the hill seeks to expand its capital in the neighbourhood.

So in an effort to put obstacles to the projects that are being carried out on the hill we have taken the following actions of sabotage:

1. cutting the industrial power cables that feed the construction site,

2. disconnecting and destroying floodlights installed on the hill under the pretext of site security,

3. drilling and cutting pipes through which the perimeter lighting and camera system will be installed on the hill.

Rovereto, Italy: Action against an SNAM vehicle in solidarity with Alfredo Cospito on hunger strike to the bitter end

In the week of March 13 we damaged a vehicle of the SNAM company, a multinational corporation dedicated to environmental devastation through the construction of gas pipelines, not far from Rovereto, we punctured its wheels, smashed its windows and headlights. Not far away we left an inscription NO 41 BIS ALFREDO LIBERO. This action is a small gesture of solidarity with anarchist comrade Alfredo Cospito on hunger strike to the bitter end against 41 bis and hostile life imprisonment. (Santiago, Chile) ATTACK WITH EXPLOSIVE DEVICE AGAINST OXIQUIM S.A.

With anarchist attitude, the central offices of Oxiquim S.A. in the municipality of Providencia, Santiago, Chile, were attacked.

The high-powered device did not explode because of a solvable technical problem, so we are aiming for more.

Oxiquim, a giant of the Chilean chemical industry and a direct supplier to the country’s major extractive industries in the forestry, mining, agroindustrial and fishing sub-areas.

Oxiquim, a company headed by Fernando Barros Tocornal, a businessman with a high level of influence in Chilean politics, a direct advocate of dictator Pinochet, former president Sebastián Piñera, and a board member of the animal exploitation company Agrosuper.

Oxiquim, directly responsible for the pollution and ecocide of the waters, territory and inhabitants of Quintero-Puchuncaví, defended by the Chilean Navy during protests against the so-called “sacrifice zones.”

This is a new act of revenge against the perpetrators of Earth devastation and destruction. It’s a new violent action by anarchist hands in permanent conspiracy and revolt. It’s a new attack justified by the existence of domination. It is another insurrectionary action in the no-holds-barred struggle for Total Liberation.

Against technological industrial complex that seeks to exploit and dominate all forms of life, WE ARE SELVAGE FORCE. Against illusions of democracy and against all governments and those responsible for Earth devastation, WE PROPOSE CHAOS AND ANARCHY.

We want that the news of this action reaches eyes and ears of imprisoned anarchist comrades, claiming solidarity as the continuity of the attack against power outside and inside prisons.

With particular complicity we stand with the vegan anarcho-nihilists arrested after the anti-speciesist attack against the animal exploitation company Susaron and with anarchist prisoners Joaquín García, Mónica Caballero and Francisco Solar. We also salute the high school students imprisoned for the anarchist uprisings in Santiago high schools and all those who from prison resist and struggle against the state and capital.

We send strength to Boris, Ivan and the anarchist prisoners in France. Strength for Erick King and the anarchist prisoners in the USA. Strength for Toby Shone in England. Strength for Gabriel and the anarchist prisoners in Spain. Strength for Giannis Michailidis and for anarchists imprisoned in Greece, Russia, the Czech Republic and around the world.

By a singular inversion of meaning, the word forest, the perilous unknown that Roman civilization could not subjugate, ended up qualifying in a few centuries the territory par excellence of religious and feudal rule, before finally becoming a generic and rather vague term. In this way we have honored our dead: We carried the incendiary device for our attack on Real as if we were carrying the remains of the dead of the social war. Two years exactly after the death-state murder of Vassilis Maggos we did this action and the spirit of Vassilis was inside us smiling at us.

At dawn on 13/07 we left an incendiary device of small power on the ground floor of the building outside the door of the Real News – Real Fm snitches. I wonder if they ever felt any pain for the many employer murders that have occurred recently such as the electrician Christos Zorbas in the HPEIROS industry or the murder of the COSCO dock worker? Hypocrisy, hypocrisy, hypocrisy… that is all that characterises the vulgarity of those in power. And to clarify the landscape, to answer that if we wanted to kill as presented by the “4th power” i.e. the executive organs of the lie of the state, which are the journalists, we would come one morning with a crowd of workers inside the offices and leave the device. But because we simply did not and do not have such a purpose to endanger ignorant people, obviously for all the reasons in the world we did not choose to do so. The Death Machine is an enormous and ever-expanding apparatus which today covers vast swathes of the surface of the Earth.

Its task is to suck in everything that it finds – mineral, vegetable, animal and human – and reduce it all into a lifeless grey toxic sludge.

Rumour has it that it also produces tiny quantities of a rich, powerful golden fluid, a honey-heroin, which none of us here have ever seen, let alone tasted.

It is said that this is piped directly into the veins of the Death Machine’s owners, soul-sour vampires who creep in cold caverns deep below the sunlit surface of our world.

The aim of the Death Machine is to destroy and pollute more and more forests, hills, valleys, plains, rivers, lakes and seas, to murder more and more birds, fish, animals and human beings.

Its aim is grow ever bigger and bigger, to boast even more rows of steel teeth and concrete claws, to belch out even greater clouds of suffocating poisonous smoke and waves of deadly radiation, to find ingenious new ways of torturing Mother Earth. Durante los días 27, 28 y 29 de Mayo tendrá lugar el «V Encuentro Anarquista contra el Sistema Tecnoindustrial y su mundo». Un lugar donde encontrarnos, conocernos, debatir, difundir y afilar nuestras ideas contra la organización técnica del mundo.
