The physical and moral extermination of revolutionary fighters and political prisoners, or the coercion of them into political renunciation and repentance, has been the goal of the State and capital throughout time. In order to achieve this aim, States have created special conditions of detention and isolation for those who took up arms against the regime, for those they call “terrorists”.
One example of special detention today is the Italian model under Article 41 bis.
Under Italian law, the Minister of “Justice” is given the right to lift the rules of treatment of some prisoners and order their transfer to special conditions of detention. The special conditions based on Article 41 bis impose complete social and sensory isolation, limiting contacts with other prisoners, limiting visits to one (1) per month with relatives, not by physical contact but through a glass partition, limiting, prohibiting, correspondence and the possession of books, shrinking prisoners’ exercise period to one (1) hour per day and increasing the time of confinement inside the cell.

Italy: We do not allow the murder of Alfredo Cospito, on hunger strike since October 20th. Call for international mobilization
On October 20th, anarchist Alfredo Cospito, during a trial at the Sassari surveillance court, made an attempt to read an articulate statement in which he was about to announce that he is starting a hunger strike against the 41 bis prison regime to which he is subjected and against life imprisonment without possibility of parole. A battle that Alfredo does not intend to stop, until his own death. The comrade, who has been in 41 bis since last May 5th, under a decree signed by then Minister of Justice Marta Cartabia, is now being detained in the Bancali prison in Sardinia.
Alfredo Cospito is an anarchist who has always been at the front line of struggles, never willing to compromise or give up. He is a comrade who has been fighting since the late 1980s, a period in which he was imprisoned as a total objector (for refusing to serve in the obligatory military service) and who, after his arrest in 2012, during the trial that followed, claimed the responsibility for the shooting of Ansaldo Nucleare executive Roberto Adinolfi, an act that was carried out by Nucleo Olga / Federazione Anarchica Informale – Fronte Rivoluzionario Internazionale, FAI-FRI (“Olga Nucleus” / Informal Anarchist Federation – International Revolutionary Front), and occurred on May 7th of the same year in Genoa.
Alfredo has been always active in the defense of comrades affected by repression, in every corner of the world. His struggle objectively concerns all detainees, among whom we particularly remember the three militants of Brigate Rosse per la costruzione del Partito Comunista Combattente (Red Brigades for the construction of the Combatant Communist Party) locked up for more than 17 years in 41 bis (Nadia Lioce, Roberto Morandi, Marco Mezzasalma). In 2009, comrade Diana Blefari, from the same organization, committed suicide after her living in this harsh prison regime.
Alfredo has been uninterruptedly in prison for 10 years, which he spent in High Security sections until his transfer to 41 bis. In 2016 he was involved in repressive operation “Scripta Manent”, accused of subversive association with the purpose of terrorism and multiple explosive attacks. Following a Supreme Court verdict in July this year, the sentence for Alfredo and Anna Beniamino was reformulated to “political massacre,” the only punishment which means prison for life. The Italian state that has always been protecting fascist mass murderers now wants to condemn two anarchists for massacre for an attack that caused neither victims nor injuries. For some, the cohesion of comradeship is built on shared positions or philosophical opinions. In an empty dimension where common words are far from action. In the guerilla war what makes us comrades is the common enlistment in this war, the choices, the hostilities behind the mound of the anarchist struggle. And when we are wrapped in chains our common component is complicity, political responsibility, unrepentant stability in the same paths. It is the dedication to the pace of the path of fire.
Urban guerilla anarchist Alfredo Cospito has been held captive in the prisons of the Italian state since 2012. He has proudly claimed political responsibility for the shooting of Ansaldo Nucleare’s CEO, Roberto Adinolfi, an action carried out by the Olga Core of the Informal Anarchist Federation (FAI- IRF). Since then he has remained an unrepentant enemy of tyranny. The constant persecutions against him, the status of exception and the restrictions, although they constantly intensify his isolation, both from his social and from his political-social environment, they do not bend Alfredo’s rebellious will, his thirst for new moments of rebellion. Since 2016, under the cover of the anti-terrorist operation Scripta Manent, Alfredo has been accused of leading the FAI, a sentence that essentially aims at his life imprisonment. Oggi, 20 ottobre 2022, presso il tribunale di sorveglianza di Sassari, nel corso di una udienza riguardante il sequestro della corrispondenza, il compagno anarchico Alfredo Cospito ha dichiarato l’inizio di uno sciopero della fame contro il regime detentivo di 41 bis in cui è stato trasferito il 5 maggio. Il compagno, che ha fatto una dichiarazione, non era presente in aula ma collegato in videoconferenza dal carcere di Bancali. Seguiranno aggiornamenti.

Anarchist prisoner Alfredo Cospito has been in Italian prisons since September 2012. He has claimed responsibility for the shooting in the legs of Ansaldo Nucleare CEO Roberto Adinolfi by the Olga Cell of the Informal Anarchist Federation (FAI-IRF).
From the very first moment of his detention, the Italian state has exercised all kinds of repressive experiments against the comrade. New prosecutions, new exhausting sentences, disciplinary sanctions, repressive operations against his political comrades. The comrade was sentenced to 9 years of imprisonment for the action against Adinolfi, while in prison he was sentenced to an additional 20 years of imprisonment (which is appreciable in total, an equivalent sentence in Greece would be 2 times life) after the prosecutions brought against him within the framework of the repressive operation Scripta Manet. In essence, the comrade was convicted as an instigator for all the actions of the FAI, since he was accused as its founder and leader, in a case that deserves special mention as it is a monument to arbitrary interpretations and vindictiveness.
The Italian state is a hybrid state when it comes to issues of anti-terrorist policy. It is a model state for its brutality and rigour in these matters, having been called upon to manage low-intensity civil war conditions during the period when armed revolutionary movements flourished in the 1960s and 1980s. The Greek state has followed the Italian example on many occasions, one need only recall the similarities between the ‘Marini case’ in Italy and the ‘Conspiracy of Cells of Fire case’ in Greece. THE ONLY VIABLE PATH
Since May 5, our comrade Alfredo Cospito has been imprisoned under the 41 bis regime. This measure was ordered after months of censorship on correspondence and after the repressive operation Sibilla in November 2021, for which he received a warrant for his arrest in prison. Behind this repressive tightening of Alfredo’s prison condition is the state’s blatant desire to shut the mouth of a comrade who, during these years of imprisonment, has contributed much, through articles and interventions, to the anarchist debate.
The 41 bis is a hard prison regime, created to isolate, silence and annihilate the prisoner, trying to bring him to cooperation with Justice. Established in the late 1980s, it was initially applied in exceptional cases of riots or serious emergencies within prison institutions. In 1992, after the Capaci massacre, it was extended to Mafia convicts. Since 2002 it has also been applied to those convicted of terrorism and subversion, thus as an instrument of political repression. Also currently in this regime are some prisoners belonging to the communist BR-PCC organization. Originally established as a detention regime of a temporary nature, from emergency to emergency, this exceptionality has become the norm. This mechanism is now bread and butter for the majority of the population since the proclamation of the so-called pandemic. It is now evident: established an emergency measure, there is never a return.
Alfredo’s transfer to 41 bis, like the recent convictions of Juan, sentenced to 28 years for an explosive attack on a Lega headquarters, and Anna, convicted along with Alfredo for political massacre, are a real warning from the state: those who spread anarchist and revolutionary practices and ideas are buried alive. The anti-anarchist operations of recent years are also an example of the repressive tightening we are experiencing. In the face of this, we cannot be reduced to cashing in as best we can on the blows the state gives us, waiting for better times.
It is urgent that we lay the groundwork for a revolutionary, international solidarity that is concrete.
The only antibodies to confront the catastrophe to which the state and bosses are leading us day by day are propaganda and action that know how to go to the root, expressing the innermost meaning of our struggle: the destruction of the existent without any mediation.

2006/2007 – Operazione “FAI DA TE”
To give context to the recent Cassation court of our anarchist comrades imprisoned and feeling the blows of repression that is Operation Scripta Manent in Italy that targetted the Italian Informal Anarchist Federation, we translate and repost the communiques of ‘Operation “FAI DE TE” (D.I.Y.) in which the bomb attack by ‘Rivolta Anonima Tremenda – Federazione Anarchica Informale’ against the Carabinieri School in Fossano features. This attack was described as ‘poiltical massacre’ by the scum of the Italian justice mafiosa and formed an integral part of the Scripta Manent trial.

On the night of June 2, 2006, two devices hidden inside two garbage bins placed about ten meters from each other explode in front of the Carabinieri cadet school in Fossano. The two explosions are timed to occur 25 minutes apart. The second device contained numerous bolts. Carabinieri officers attracted by the first explosion thought it was an act of vandalism, so they cleared the debris from the road and moved away before the second explosion occurred
OPERATION DO-IT-YOURSELF
With Operation DO-IT-YOURSELF, the RAT was born: celebrating in our own way, with 2 large firecrackers filled with bolts, the birth of the infamous Italian republic and the equally infamous anniversary of the Carabinieri weapon.
RAT identifies itself under the banner of the Informal Anarchist Federation and calls on the other federated groups to join the DO IT YOURSELF campaign in solidarity with all arrested anarchists, in response to the wave of anti-anarchist repression that has hit the movement in recent months, forcing many anarchist newspapers to close their doors by putting entire editorial offices under lock and key.

We hit the Carabinieri cadet school in Fossano to make them understand from an early age what admiration their criminal career raises among us exploited, among those who immigrate every day struggling to survive without an ID in their pockets, among those who have seen friends or relatives mowed down at a checkpoint, among those who reject the present state of affairs and rebel, not with talk, but here and now. We love to distribute “firecrackers” in their path so that 10 100 1000 Nassirya* is not just a shouted slogan, but a reality not only in the far east, but also in our cities and valleys.
